How does the presence of the older generation in the household impact upon division of childcare between couples? Does it affect mothers and fathers differently, and does this vary according to whether it is the mums' or dads' parents? What do people look for in grandparental care, and how do they see it as different from other care substitutes? Drawing on in-depth interview data with thirty-seven married couples and individuals from Taiwan, this study finds that Taiwanese grandparents treat childcare assistance as their moral responsibilities. Mothers and fathers feel differently about grandparental childcare assistance, however. Mothers often express more appreciation for childcare assistance from their own mothers than their mothers-in-law. Fathers unreservedly appreciate the role of both their parents and their in-laws in childcare assistance. Finally, this analysis suggests that gender relations and intergenerational relations are intimately intertwined, and that the nature and character of intergenerational relations in a given society is one of the factors mediating the degree to which married women's entrance into the paid labor force result in the perceived childcare deficit. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
