This research explores how Corporate Accounting Disclosure (CAD) affects the corporate reputation (CR) of publicly traded Taiwan companies, with special emphasis on the moderating influence of social learning (SL). While Corporate Accounting Disclosure and social learning serve as the independent and moderating variables, respectively, corporate reputation is the study's dependent variable. A sample of 125 companies, listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation (TWSE), was selected for this study. Our findings suggest that Corporate Accounting Disclosure positively correlates with corporate reputation, as does social learning. Interestingly, the anticipated moderating effect of Social Learning on the association between Corporate Accounting Disclosure and Corporate Reputation was not observed. Future research endeavors may delve deeper into underlying reasons for this phenomenon by adopting a multifaceted approach of longitudinal studies and cross-cultural analysis. The study also offers in-depth discussions of its findings and clearly outlines its theoretical and practical implications. Introduction: A growing number of Taiwanese teachers are choosing to teach at universities in mainland China, but their jobs are not always stable. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the factors influencing young teachers from Taiwan to teach in universities in China. Methods: Twenty-seven young teachers from Taiwan with master's or doctoral degrees who were willing to apply to work at universities in China and who were already teaching in China were invited to conduct in-depth interviews to collect research data. The interview data were coded and analyzed according to the Push-Pull-Mooring (PPM) Model. Results and discussion: The results showed that the understanding of mainland Chinese universities among young Taiwanese teachers is not entirely consistent. Taiwanese teachers who previously studied in mainland China have a more comprehensive understanding of mainland Chinese universities, and some teachers have gained a superficial understanding through academic exchanges between the two sides and information shared by friends. However, still, 7% of the teachers have no understanding at all. Most young Taiwanese teachers indicate that they do not understand the talent recruitment policies of mainland Chinese universities. The push factors that influence young teachers from Taiwan to teach at mainland universities are: Oversupply of teachers in Taiwan, poor environment for higher education in Taiwan, poor articulation of the cross-strait academic system, and four aspects of teacher retirement and re-employment in Taiwan. The pull factors are: Beneficial policies, salary, living environment, educational advantages and cultural dissemination in 5 areas. Purpose: The global fight against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has led to widespread vaccination efforts, yet the optimal dosing schedule for SARS-CoV-2 vaccines remains a subject of ongoing research. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of administering two booster doses as the third and fourth doses at different intervals to enhance vaccine protection. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted at a military regional hospital operated by the Ministry of National Defense in Taiwan. A cohort of vaccinated individuals was selected, and their vaccine potency was assessed at various time intervals following their initial vaccine administration. The study participants received booster doses as the third and fourth doses, with differing time intervals between them. The study monitored neutralizing antibody titers and other relevant parameters to assess vaccine efficacy. Results: Our findings revealed that the potency of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine exhibited a significant decline 80 days after the initial vaccine administration. However, a longer interval of 175 days between booster injections resulted in significantly higher neutralizing antibody titers. The individuals who received the extended interval boosters exhibited a more robust immune response, suggesting that a vaccine schedule with a 175-day interval between injections may provide superior protection against SARS-CoV-2. Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of optimizing vaccine booster dosing schedules to maximize protection against SARS-CoV-2. The results indicate that a longer interval of 175 days between the third and fourth doses of the vaccine can significantly enhance the neutralizing antibody response, potentially offering improved protection against the virus. These findings have important implications for vaccine distribution and administration strategies in the ongoing battle against the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Objectives: Female sex is an inconsistent ischaemic stroke risk factor in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We hypothesised that the ischaemic stroke risk varies with age among women compared with men.Methods: We retrieved the patients with newly diagnosed AF during 2001-2013 from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients with missing information, age <20 years, history of valvular heart disease and surgery, rheumatic heart disease, hyperthyroidism or anticoagulation and/or antiplatelet use were excluded. Propensity score matching (PSM) included patient comorbidities, medications and index date stratified by age and sex groups. Primary outcome was defined as ischaemic stroke at follow-up.Results: After exclusion criteria, 87 369 men and 71 853 women remained for analysis (aged 73.1±14.4 years). After 1:1 PSM, we included 59 583 men (aged 73.5±13.7 years) and 59 583 women (aged 73.4±13.8 years) for analysis. We also stratified patients by age. The ischaemic stroke risk varied with age in women compared with men: lower in the ≤55 years (subdistribution HR (SHR)=0.75, 95% CI 0.62 to 0.90) and 56-65 years (SHR=0.87, 95% CI 0.78 to 0.98) groups, neutral in the 66-75 years group (SHR=1.01, 95% CI 0.94 to 1.08) and adverse in the >75 years group (SHR=1.14, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.19).Conclusions: The female/male ischaemic stroke risk ratio varied with age. Only women aged >75 years had a higher risk, whereas women aged <65 years had a lower risk compared with men. These findings challenge the 'sex category' component of the CHA2DS2-VASc score, used to make decision regarding anticoagulation treatment in AF patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of Pharmacovigilance Planning and Risk Minimization Planning (PVP/RMP), initiated by the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH), addressed an important conceptual change from monitoring the safety of individual medicine to proactively conducting risk prevention for the minimization of medication error. However, the implementation of PVP/RMP is a challenge in societies like Taiwan where irrational medication and co-medication is prevalent. It is even more difficult in Taiwan where two regulatory bodies are governing pharmaceutical affairs, namely Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) in charge of Western Medicine (WM) and the Department of Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy (DCMP) in charge of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). There are thus dual-tract drug approval panels, two GMP controls and two independent adverse drug event reporting systems. This rendered irrational co-medication of WM and TCM undetectable and the standard tools for monitoring pharmacovigilance inapplicable. The bilateral regulatory system is conceptually unscientific in accordance with PVP/RMP and unethical from humanity point of view. The first part of this review delivers (1) social aspects of polypharmacy in Taiwan; (2) regulatory aspects of pharmaceutical administration; (3) risks undermined in the bilateral regulatory system and (4) pharmacoepidemiology in relation to the risk of polypharmacy. As evidence-based medicine (EBM) forms the fundamental risk-benefit assessment on medication, the second part of this review delivers (1) the scientific aspects of the beauty and the odds of biological system that governs host-xenobiotics interaction; (2) conceptual evolution from product management (pharmacovigilance) to risk management (PVP/RMP); (3) non-biased due process is essential for risk-benefit assessment on medicinal products and (4) the opinion of the authors on system building for safe medication. Background: In utero arsenic exposure may alter fetal developmental programming by altering DNA methylation, which may result in a higher risk of disease in later life. We evaluated the association between in utero arsenic exposure and DNA methylation (DNAm) in cord blood and its influence in later life.Methods: Genome-wide DNA methylation in cord blood from 64 subjects in the Taiwanese maternal infant and birth cohort was analyzed. Robust regressions were applied to assess the association of DNA methylation with in utero arsenic exposure. Multiple testing was adjusted by controlling false discovery rate (FDR) of 0.05. The DAVID bioinformatics tool was implemented for functional annotation analyses on the detected CpGs. The identified CpGs were further tested in an independent cohort. For the CpGs replicated in the independent cohort, linear mixed models were applied to assess the association of DNA methylation with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) at different ages (2, 5, 8, 11 and 14 years).Results: In total, 579 out of 385,183 CpGs were identified after adjusting for multiple testing (FDR = 0.05), of which ~60% were positively associated with arsenic exposure. Functional annotation analysis on these CpGs detected 17 KEGG pathways (FDR = 0.05) including pathways for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and diabetes mellitus. In the independent cohort, about 46% (252 out of 553 CpGs) of the identified CpGs showed associations consistent with those in the study cohort. In total, 11 CpGs replicated in the independent cohort were in the pathways related to CVD and diabetes mellitus. Via longitudinal analyses, we found at 5 out of the 11 CpGs methylation was associated with LDL over time and interactions between DNA methylation and time were observed at 4 of the 5 CpGs, cg25189764 (coeff = 0.157, p-value = 0.047), cg04986899 (coeff. For interaction [coeff.int] = 0.030, p-value = 0.024), cg04903360 (coeff.int = 0.026, p-value = 0.032), cg08198265 (coeff.int = -0.063, p-value = 0.0021), cg10473311 (coeff.int = -0.021, p-value = 0.027).Conclusion: In utero arsenic exposure was associated with cord blood DNA methylation at various CpGs. The identified CpGs may help determine pathological epigenetic mechanisms linked to in utero arsenic exposure. The article assesses association of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) with early pregnancy discomforts. It used structured questionnaires to interview a sample of pregnant women from hospitals in Taiwan. Results showed severity of discomfort in pregnant women who experienced ETS exposure in their households, workplaces, and public places. It highlights the need for health education programs and self-awareness targeting this population.

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF). The MMP9 promoter has a functional polymorphism rs3918242 that can regulate the level of gene transcription. This study recruited 200 AF patients and 240 controls. The MMP9 rs3918242 was examined by polymerase chain reactions. HL-1 atrial myocytes were cultured and electrically stimulated. Right atrial appendages were obtained from six patients with AF and three controls with sinus rhythm undergoing open heart surgery. The MMP9 expression and activity were determined using immunohistochemical analysis and gelatin zymography, respectively. Rapid pacing induces MMP9 secretion from HL-1 myocytes in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The responsiveness of MMP9 transcriptional activity to tachypacing was significantly enhanced by rs3918242. The expression of MMP9 was increased in fibrillating atrial tissue than in sinus rhythm. However, the distribution of rs3918242 genotypes and allele frequencies did not significantly differ between the control and AF groups. HL-1 myocyte may secrete MMP9 in response to rapid pacing, and the secretion could be modulated by rs3918242. Although the MMP9 expression of human atrial myocyte is associated with AF, our study did not support the association of susceptibility to AF among Taiwanese subjects with the MMP9 rs3918242 polymorphism. Background: There is accumulating epidemiologic evidence that exposure to traffic-related air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM) and polyaromatic hydro carbons (PAHs), plays a role in etiology and prognosis of a large scale of illnesses, although the role of specific causal agents and underlying mechanisms for different health outcomes remains unknown. Objective: Our general objective was to assess the relations between personal exposure to traffic exhausts, in particular ambient PM2.5 and PAHs, and the occurrence of DNA strand breaks by applying personal monitoring of PM and biomarkers of exposure (urinary 1-hydroxypyrene-glucuronide, 1-OHPG) and effect (urinary 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, 8-OHdG and DNA strand breaks). Methods: We recruited 91 traffic conductors and 53 indoor office workers between May 2009 and June 2011 in Taipei City, Taiwan. We used PM2.5 personal samplers to collect breathing-zone particulate PAHs samples. Spot urine and blood samples after work shift of 2 consecutive days were analyzed for 1-OHPG, 8-OHdG and DNA strand breaks, respectively. Statistical methods included linear regression and mixed models. Results: Urinary 8-OHdG levels and the occurrence of DNA strand breaks in traffic conductors significantly exceeded those in indoor office workers in mixed models. Particulate PAHs levels showed a positive association with urinary 1-OHPG in the regression model (β = 0.056, p = 0.01). Urinary 1-OHPG levels were significantly associated with urinary 8-OHdG levels in the mixed model (β = 0.101, p = 0.023). Our results provide evidence that exposure to fine particulates causes DNA damage. Further, particulate PAHs could be biologically active constituents of PM2.5 with reference to the induction of oxidative DNA damages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this descriptive correlation study was to examine the relationship among symptom distress, coping behaviors and quality of life in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. This study was conducted by cross-sectional research design and convenient sampling. Ninety-three patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia were recruited from a general hospital in northern Taiwan. We used the basic information questionnaire, international prostate symptom score, revised ways of coping checklist and Short Form- 36 to collect data. The data were analyzed including mean, percentage, standard deviations and correlation coefficients. The results of this study showed that the patients with severe symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia were significantly worse in physical function (48.95±14.26 vs. 55.68±6.77, 53.56±7.02, p <.05) than patients with moderate and mild symptoms. In addition, this study also indicated that problem-focused coping was positively correlated with general health(r=.288, p <.01). The results of this study could help nurses to design health promotion programs and to provide appropriate health education for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, and furthermore improve coping strategies, overall quality of life, and maximize nursing functions in the future. Lysine was attached to phenylbutyric acid (PBA) to form PBA-a-Lys and PBA-co-Lys as PBA prodrugs for treating chemotherapy-associated mucositis. Pharmacokinetic studies were conducted in Wistar rats for determining the systemic bioavail- ability of both prodrugs and the released PBA. The systemic bioavailability of PBA after oral administration of PBA-a-Lys or PBA-co-Lys was higher than from i.v. administration, indicating that first pass effect is responsible for the transformation from the prodrugs to the parent drug. Lack of stability in the intestine made PBA-a-Lys unsatisfied as an oral prodrug of PBA. Oral administration of PBA-co-Lys, on the other hand, led to a slow PBA-releasing profile in circulation. Although the AUCo-t °f systemic released PBA from oral administration of PBA-co-Lys was lower than from oral administration of PBA per se, MRT¡nf was 5 times longer (9.64 ± 2.16 vs 1.81 ± 0.28 hr), tm was 4 times longer (6.18 ± 2.09 hr vs 1.50 ± 0.17 hr), and AUMCinf was 2 folds higher (168.7 ± 67.7 hr*hr*|ig/mL vs 88.8 ± 12.4 hr*hr*ug/mL). In conclusion, oral administration of PBA-co-Lysine exhibited a sustained PBA-releasing pharmacokinetic profile in rats. The bioavailability of PBA released in inflammatory tissues and anti-mucositis activity need to be further investigated for the evaluation of PBA-co-Lysine as an effective targetable anti-mucositis agent. This paper investigates the investment preference of foreign institutional investors across different industries in Taiwanese stock market. By employing the idea of Fama and French (1992) three-factor model with investment strategy, the investment preference is a function of beta value, company size, book-market ratio and investment strategy. Our empirical results find that foreign institutional investors in all five industries adopt momentum strategies in their investment preference. Next, in each industry, investment preference has a long-run equilibrium relationship with beta value, company size, book-market ratio, and investment strategy. Moreover, in the electronic, financial, and steel industries, foreign institutional investors' investment preference has corrective power in the short-run. Further, the results of the Granger causality test reveal that the investment preference has a uni-directional leading relationship with beta value in the financial and textile industries. While in case of the steel industry, investment preference and beta value have a bi-directional causal feedback relationship. Industries where company size leads investment preference include electronics, finance, and steel. Book-market ratio leads investment preference only in the textile industry. Generally speaking, in each industry, company size is among the predominant factors that foreign institutional investors take into account when making decisions. The influences of beta value and investment strategy on investment preference do not appear significant. This paper presents a novel approach based on Weibull distribution to determine the capacity of wind turbine generators (WTGs) using capacity factor (CF), normalized average power (PN), and the product of CF and PN under different values of tower height and rated wind speed. Five locations for installation of WTG in Taiwan are practically examined. The proposed Weibull distribution is employed to represent probability distribution of wind speed variation, while the important relationships among mean wind speed (MWS), standard deviation of wind speed, and both scale and shape parameters of the Weibull distribution are also derived. The cost of energy (COE) and capital costs of WTG under different tower heights and various locations are also determined. It can be concluded from the simulation results of five installation locations of WTG in Taiwan that suitable values for both shape parameter and scale parameters of Weibull distribution as well as wind turbine capacity are identically important for selecting locations of installing WTG. The scale parameter of Weibull distribution also significantly affects COE, and it is important to determine whether a wind farm is good or not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have developed a simple function for accurately estimating target height for use in evaluating growth and growth-promoting therapies in Taiwanese children. The heights of parents and their adult offspring born in the 1970s were determined in 1,229 healthy families who accompanied another family member to our pediatric clinic. We directly measured the heights of the population-based cohort of adult offspring. The heights of their parents were based on self-report. Both the parents and their offspring were healthy. The increases in height between the two generations were 1.49--3.19 cm for boys and 2.03-2.61 cm for girls. These increases lie between those reported for Chinese children in Hong Kong (4.2-4.8 cm) and children in Sweden (0.7-1.0 cm). Final height was underestimated using the corrected midparental height method and was overestimated using the final parental height model developed from Swedish data. We developed a new linear model by fitting our data: boy height = 79.3 + 0.56(midparental height); girl height = 35.2 + 0.76(midparental height). The intercept and slope of the model are similar to those reported for Swedish girls but not to those reported for Swedish boys. Use of the new equations derived from our data may increase the accuracy of estimates of target height in Taiwanese children. The intermediate position of our fairly representative Taiwanese sample in both final height and generational increases in final height may reflect an intermediate stage between the Swedes and Hong Kong Chinese in the secular trend of heights. Due to increasing awareness of oral hygiene, many dentistry websites have been established in recent years. However, many Internet users cannot find helpful information online, nor do these users frequently visit such websites. The purposes of this study were to investigate the usefulness of dentistry websites for meeting the public's needs, to examine the current status of dentistry information on the Internet in Taiwan, to explore the influences of dentistry websites on the attitudes of dental patients, and to analyze factors that may influence the use rate of page viewers. Based on the analyzed information from dentistry websites and the results of questionnaires on Internet usage, we found that most dentistry websites only provide general information on clinics and the backgrounds of their dentists. However, the public is interested in such information as the costs of materials and treatment procedures which is not currently provided by many dentistry websites. The results of this research also showed that in general, most people do not browse through dentistry websites for dental information, and for those who do, viewers are mainly aged 30-40 years. Among the selected samples, 24% wished to obtain related clinical information before seeking medical advice for treatment of oral diseases. Furthermore, about 71% of the people interviewed believed that ideal dentistry websites that met the public's needs were essential. Therefore, we suggest that the dental profession should put more efforts into establishing ideal dentistry websites that meet the public's demands for information in Taiwan. OBJECTIVE -- The objective of this article was to assess mortality risks at different levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG) in Taiwan, with particular attention to those pre-diabetic subjects with impaired fasting glucose (IFG). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS -- Governmental employees and schoolteachers were followed up for an average of 11 years. With the use of Cox regression analyses, mortality risks were calculated for 36,386 subjects, aged 40-69. RESULTS -- FBG ≥110 mg/dl was associated with increased mortality risks for all causes, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and diabetes. IFG, when defined as 110-125 mg/dl, was associated with a significant increase for CVD and/or diabetes mortality. These mortality risks remained elevated when known CVD risk factors were adjusted for. The IFG group shared risk factor characteristics more with the FBG ≥126 mg/dl group than with the FBG <110 mg/dl group. When IFG was defined as 100-125 mg/dl, the number of subjects quadrupled, but mortality risks diminished substantially because of the inclusion of 100-109 mg/dl group. The lowest FBG group, 50-75 mg/dl, had a significant 2-fold risk from all causes. CONCLUSIONS -- There was an overall J-shaped relationship between all-cause mortality and FBG. IFG, when defined as 110-125 mg/dl, is an independent risk factor and should be aggressively treated as a disease because its subsequent mortality risks for CVD and diabetes were significantly increased. The newly defined IFG at 100-125 mg/dl did not have the predictive power for later increases in CVD or diabetes mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is evidence indicating that ingestion of arsenic may predispose the development of diabetes mellitus in arsenic-endemic areas in Taiwan. However, the prevalence of diabetes and related vascular diseases in the entire southwestern arseniasis-endemic and nonendemic areas remains to be elucidated. We used the National Health Insurance Database for 1999-2000 to derive the prevalence of non-insulin-dependent diabetes and related vascular diseases by age and sex among residents in southwestern arseniasis-endemic and nonendemic areas in Taiwan. The study included 66,667 residents living in endemic areas and 639,667 in nonendemic areas, all ≥25 years of age. The status of diabetes and vascular diseases was ascertained through disease diagnosis and treatment prescription included in the reimbursement claims of clinics and hospitals. The prevalence of non-insulin-dependent diabetes, age- and gender-adjusted to the general population in Taiwan, was 7.5% (95% confidence interval, 7.4-7.7%) in the arseniasis-endemic areas and 3.5% (3.5-3.6%) in the nonendemic areas. Among both diabetics and nondiabetics, higher prevalence of microvascular and macrovascular diseases was observed in arseniasis-endemic than in the nonendemic areas. Age- and gender-adjusted prevalence of microvascular disease in endemic and nonendemic areas was 20.0% and 6.0%, respectively, for diabetics, and 8.6% and 1.0%, respectively, for nondiabedcs. The corresponding prevalence of macrovascular disease was 25.3% and 13.7% for diabetics, and 12.3% and 5.5% for nondiabetics. Background: Ovarian cancer is a silent killer. Most of the patients came with advanced stages. The retrospective review here was for a better understanding of the current situation of ovarian cancer patients treated at National Taiwan University Hospital., Methods: One hundred and eighty-seven patients with primary ovarian cancer were treated at National Taiwan University Hospital from 1980 to 1989. Medical records were reviewed thoroughly. The WHO histological classification and FIGO staging system (1987) were used., Results: The ages at diagnosis ranged from 2 to 87 years. Peak incidence was noted between 50-59 years. According to the WHO histological classification, the distribution of histological types included 79.1% epithelial, 4.3% sex-cord stromal tumors, 0.5% lipid cell, 12.8% germ cell, and 3.2% non-specific soft tissue origin. Based on FIGO staging system, 31.6% of the patients were in stage I, 11.2% in stage II, 40.6% in stage III and 16.6% in stage IV. Mean ages for common epithelial, non-epithelial, and germ cell ovarian cancers were 49, 26, 23 years, respectively. Cytoreductive surgery was done in 47.4% of stage I, 23.8% of stage II, 15.8% of stage III, and 12.9% of stage IV. The leading treatment modality was surgery plus chemotherapy, which was performed in 50.3% of whole series. Survival in patients with ovarian cancer is a function of clinical stage and histologic type. The 5-year observed survival rates for stage I to IV were 76.3%, 59.9%, 9.1%, and 4.3% respectively. Further improvements need the development of methods for early detection and multiple modalities of therapy.
