Abstract: Seismic profiles provide evidence that there has been strong transport by deep-water bottom currents and drift deposition on the northern slope of the South China Sea. Earlier geochemical studies suggest that the drift sediments originated primarily from Taiwan. However, the transport process, history and origin of the deep-water bottom deposition in the northern South China Sea, on both glacial–interglacial and tectonic time scales, remain unclear. Here, we show new high-resolution records of clay minerals, grain size and mass accumulation rate (MAR) of terrigenous materials from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1144, together with trace element concentrations in siliciclastic sediments from ODP Site 1146. Combined with other published data, we find that the primary source for sediments at ODP Sites 1144–1148 since 3Ma is from Taiwan, and not from Pearl River as previously thought. Before 3Ma, however, sediment source to ODP Sites 1146 and 1148 was mainly from the Pearl River. Increased contribution of terrigenous supply from Taiwan to the northern South China Sea since ~3Ma may be related to the formation of the Taiwan orogen and strengthening of deep-water bottom current transport in the northern South China Sea. Variations in clay mineralogy and sedimentology at ODP Site 1144, located on a sediment drift, shows strong glacial–interglacial cyclicity. Abstract: X-ray diffraction (XRD) mineralogical and grain-size analyses indicate that inner continental shelf sediments in the East China Sea (ECS) represent a unique mixing of clays derived from the Yangtze River and silts/sands from small western Taiwanese rivers. Taiwanese (e.g., Choshui) clays (<2μm) display no smectite but the best illite crystallinity and are only distributed along southeastern Taiwan Strait. Both Yangtze and Taiwanese river clays are illite-dominated, but the poor illite crystallinity and the presence of smectite and kaolinite indicate that Taiwan Strait clays are mainly Yangtze-dominated. In contrast, medium silts (20–35μm) and very fine sands (63–90μm) in the Taiwan Strait are characterized by low feldspar/quartz, low K-feldspar/plagioclase and high kaolinite/quartz, indicating their provenance from Taiwanese rivers. Taiwanese silts and sands are introduced primarily by the way of typhoon-derived floods and transported northward by the Taiwan Warm Current during summer–fall months. Yangtze clays, in contrast, are widely dispersed southward about 1000km to the western Taiwan Strait, transported by the China Coastal Current during winter–spring months. Since most Taiwan Strait samples were collected in May 2006, clay results in this paper might only represent the winter–spring pattern of the dispersal of Yangtze sediments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Okinawa Trough (OT) is a large sink of sediments supplied by the East Asian continent. Identifying the provenance of the OT sediments is key to reconstructing the temporal and spatial variations of the terrigenous supply to this area and is important for understanding the impact of paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic variability on the sediment supply to this marginal sea over the late Quaternary. In this contribution, we show that radiogenic strontium (Sr) and neodymium (Nd) isotopes allow to efficiently distinguish Yellow and Yangtze/Taiwan River detrital sediments, and can be used to reconstruct distinct changes in the provenance of the detrital fraction of marine sediments from the middle and northern OT since the last deglaciation. The Sr and Nd isotope signatures are compared to those of the potential sediment sources, namely the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers, the Taiwan orogen, and volcanic material from the OT and nearby islands, and the relative contributions of these sources are reconstructed. The Sr and Nd isotope compositions of the detrital fraction in the two sediment cores recovered from the middle and northern OT show that the sediments mainly originated from the Yangtze River between 18 and 10.5 ka, which was caused by low sea level and a widely developed channel system on the continental shelf. During the period between 10.5 and 7.0 ka, the rising sea level resulted in elevated Yangtze and Yellow Rivers sediment input into the OT. Simultaneously, large-scale volcanic activity also contributed significant amounts of material to the OT. During the last 7.0 ka, besides important contributions from the Yellow River, the intensification of the Kuroshio Current resulted in increased delivery of sediment from Taiwan to the OT. • Yangtze and Yellow River sediments can be distinguished with Sr Nd isotope. • Okinawa Trough (OT) sediments derived from the Yangtze River from 18.0 to 10.5 ka. • Yangtze and Yellow River contributed sediment to the OT from 10.5 to 7.0 ka. • Kuroshio Current control Taiwan sediment to the OT after 7.0 ka. • Yellow River sediment was transported to the OT by the coastal current in the last 10.5 ka. We present a multi-proxy geochemical analysis of core KNG5 retrieved from the northern South China Sea slope spanning the last 13.0 ka BP to assess the response of weathering and erosion processes in the Southwestern Taiwan River basin to climate change. A provenance analysis indicates that the core sediments were primarily derived from the Southwestern Taiwan River, and can be used to reconstruct the erosion and/or weathering history of this river basin. The chemical index of alteration, the plagioclase index of alteration, Rb/Sr, Al/Ti, principle component 1, and K/Al combined with terrigenous mass accumulation rates and the proportion of clay exhibit sharp excursions from 12.0 to 5.5 ka, peaking at 10.0 ka, which suggests strong chemical weathering and physical erosion during the Early-Mid Holocene, the period of the maximum summer monsoon. Abrupt falling weathering trends during 5.2 and 3.5 ka BP correlate with a weaker monsoon. After 3.5 ka BP, a stable lower weathering trend to the present day was evident, indicating the deposition of less weathered sediments in the slope when the monsoon rainfall was weakening. A good correlation between our proxy records of chemical weathering and variations of the monsoon intensity in South China emphasizes that variation in monsoon intensity is most likely the primary drive of the intensity of weathering and erosion in Southwestern Taiwan River sediments over the last 13.0 ka BP. Finally, we concluded that geochemical parameters can be used as reliable proxies for climate variation on a millennial-centennial time scale in such areas as Taiwan, where weathering-limited regimes exist.
