The aim of this study was to apply biochemical parameters to Onychostoma barbatulum to understand whether Wuling Farm activities have caused organic pollution from xenoestrogens to flow into surrounding streams and thereby affected area aquatic ecosystems. Individuals of the Taiwan shovel-jaw carp (O. barbatulum) were collected by fyke netting in the Cijiawan, Kaoshan, and Yusheng Rivers in the protected area of Shei-Pa National Park and in the Ikawan River outside the protected areas from 4–5 June 2015 to 20–21 September 2015. The collected male individuals of O. barbatulum were divided into two groups. In the first group monooxygenase (Mon) activity, glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity, and vitellogenin (VTG) concentration in the liver were measured right after they were captured. Those in the second group were acclimated for 14 days and then exposed to 0 (control) or 10 ng/L 17β-estradiol for 10 days and then measured for changes in Mon, GST, and VTG in their livers. The value of VTG concentrations in O. barbatulum individuals collected from the Ikawan River was 2.12 ± 1.62 μg PO42+/g protein, which was the highest among all samples, followed by those collected from the Yusheng River (0.78 ± 1.00 μg PO42+/g protein). Individuals collected from the Yusheng River had the highest liver Mon activity (4.16 ± 1.08△A650/30 min/g protein) and the highest GST activity (1.58 ± 1.13 △A340/20 min/g protein), followed by those from the Ikawan River (Mon: 3.63 ± 1.13 △A650/30 min/g protein; GST: 1.24 ± 0.73 △A340/20 min/g protein). Comprehensive analyses showed that Mon and GST activities and VTG concentrations in livers measured right after being collected were lower than individuals exposed to 10 ng 17β-estradiol/L in the laboratory. Induced VTG concentrations were 9.87 ± 0.89 μg PO42+/g protein, Mon activity 8.02 ± 1.74 △A650/30 min/g protein, and GST activity 3.24 ± 0.62 △A340/20 min/g protein, indicating that farming activities have not significantly affected these aquatic organisms. However, pollution sources are still releasing pollutants containing xenoestrogens into the Yusheng River and Ikawan River. The countervailing effects of disturbances (e.g., high mortality and enhanced recovery) on population dynamics can occur through demographic processes under rapidly increasing climatic extremes. Across an extreme‐event gradient, we mechanistically demonstrated how dramatic changes in streamflow have affected the population persistence of endangered salmon in monsoonal Taiwan over a three‐decade period. Our modeling indicated that the dynamics of the age‐structured population were attributed to demographic processes, in which extensive mortality was characterized as a function of climatic extremes and vulnerability in the young stage of fish. In the stochastic simulations, we found that the extensive mortality and high proportion of large fish resulted from extreme flooding, which caused high values of postimpact population recovery. Our empirical evidence suggests that the magnitudes and timing of disturbance can explain the population persistence when facing climatic extremes and thereby challenges the understanding of the mechanistic drivers of these countervailing phenomena under changing environmental conditions. Aim The aim of this study was to pilot test the effects of regular senior elastic band exercises on the generation of free radicals and antioxidant enzyme activities in older adults. Background Long-term regular exercises have positive health promotion outcomes. On the contrary, high-intensity, high-speed and short-term exercises in older adults may increase free radicals and cause chronic disease and ageing effect. Design A prospective randomized controlled pilot study. Methods Data were collected during 2012. Twenty-five older adults were recruited from a community care centre, southern Taiwan and were randomly assigned to either an experimental or control group. Twenty-two participants completed the study: experimental group ( n = 10) and control group ( n = 12). The experimental group performed 6-month senior elastic band exercises while the control group kept regular daily routines. Both groups received blood tests (thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances and glutathione peroxidase) 30 minutes before the study began and 1 hour after the final intervention treatment. Results At the end of the 6-month senior elastic band exercises, no statistically significant differences in thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances and glutathione peroxidase values between the experimental and control groups. No significant differences existed in both thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances and glutathione peroxidase values before and after the 6-month senior elastic band exercises either. Conclusions Regular senior elastic band exercises did not increase the generation of free radicals and antioxidant enzyme activities. Senior elastic band exercises have the potential to be promoted among older adults in the community as an exercise option without adverse effects on free radicals and have potential for mitigating ageing and increasing disease control. Formosan landlocked salmon is an endangered species and is very sensitive to stream temperature change. This study attempts to improve a former stream temperature model (STM) which was developed for the salmon's habitat to simulate stream temperature more realistically. Two modules, solar radiation modification (SRM) and surface/subsurface runoff mixing (RM), were incorporated to overcome the limitation of STM designed only for clear-sky conditions. It was found that daily temperature difference is related to cloud cover and can be used to adjust the effects of cloud cover on incident solar radiation to the ground level. The modified model (STM + SRM) improved the simulation during a baseflow period in both winter and summer with the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient improved from 0.37 (by STM only) to 0.71 for the winter and from −0.18 to 0.70 for the summer. On the days with surface/subsurface runoff, the incorporation of the two new modules together (STM + SRM + RM) improved the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient from 0.00 to 0.65 and from 0.29 to 0.83 in the winter and the summer, respectively. Meanwhile, the contributions of major thermal sources to stream temperature changes were identified. Groundwater is a major controlling factor for regulating seasonal changes of stream temperature while solar radiation is the primary factor controlling daily stream temperature variations. The article discusses a study which described the movement patterns of and habitat use by adult Formosan landlocked salmon in Chichiawan Stream, Taiwan in summer. The study also evaluated the effects of flood caused by typhoons on their movements and habitat use using a nano-tag radio telemetry technique. Results showed that the flood did not change the positions or habitat use by the adult salmon. In addition, 10 tagged fish predominately used microhabitats near boulders and made frequent short movements. Findings suggest that adult salmon are basically sedentary in summer.

Clinical Trials Identifier: NCT02329873., Background: Acute exacerbation (AE) of COPD is characterized by a sudden worsening of COPD symptoms. Previous studies have explored the effectiveness of respiratory rehabilitation for patients with COPD; however, no training program specific to acute exacerbation in elderly patients or unstable periods during hospitalization has been developed., Objective: To evaluate the effects of a respiratory rehabilitation exercise training package on dyspnea, cough, exercise tolerance, and sputum expectoration among hospitalized elderly patients with AECOPD., Methods: A randomized control trial was conducted. Pretest and posttest evaluations of 61 elderly inpatients with AECOPD (experimental group n=30; control group n=31) were performed. The experimental group received respiratory rehabilitation exercise training twice a day, 10-30 minutes per session for 4 days. The clinical parameters (dyspnea, cough, exercise tolerance, and sputum expectoration) were assessed at the baseline and at the end of the fourth day., Results: All participants (median age =70 years, male =60.70%, and peak expiratory flow 140 L) completed the study. In the patients of the experimental group, dyspnea and cough decreased and exercise tolerance and sputum expectoration increased significantly compared with those of the patients in the control group (all P<0.05). Within-group comparisons revealed that the dyspnea, cough, and exercise tolerance significantly improved in the experimental group by the end of the fourth day (all P<0.05)., Conclusion: Results of this study suggest that the respiratory rehabilitation exercise training package reduced symptoms and enhanced the effectiveness of the care of elderly inpatients with AECOPD.
