This study aims to develop Taiwan undergraduates' volunteer service motivation scale. To begin with, item pool was proposed on the basis of literature. After discussing with three Taiwan undergraduates, item pool, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (N = 150) was proceeded, where three tests were conducted EFA: 1. Item analysis: comparisons of extreme groups and correlation analysis were employed. The former's critical ratios are all more than 3, and reach significant standard, showing the 20 items have discriminating power. The latter shows that the r value of all items and the total score are all more than .60, and reach significant standard (p<0.001), showing the items can measure the same concept. 2. Factor analysis: primary axis factoring and the promax method of oblique rotation were adopted. In the first EFA, the 5 items concerning interpersonal relationship were distributed to other factors; and, due to incompatibility with other factors, so this dimension of Interpersonal Relationship was deleted. The 2nd EFA's results are consistent with the original design, which is categorized into Self-Growth, Serving Others, and Social Identification, and has appropriate total variation and total reliability. In order to verify the stability of the EFA factors, another batch of samples (N = 452) were investigated through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). In accordance with the CFA's results, the initial model's test are acceptable without offending estimations, the basic fit of the initial model is in good fitness (including individual reliability, composite reliability, the average variance extracted, construct discrimination). To conclude, these 15 items 3 factors of Taiwan Undergraduates' Volunteer Service Motivation Scale has acceptable reliability and validity; therefore, it can serve as the scale to investigate Taiwan undergraduates' volunteer service motivation for proceeding the relative studies.

The research aims to develop "Sense of Life Meaning Scale" of Taiwan college students. In accordance with the related literature, most Western scholars adopted Frankl's Logotherapy for developing "Sense of Life Meaning Scale", which consists of freedom of will, will to meaning and meaning of life. The research also adopts these three beliefs as research factors; furthermore, with the related literature and measurements, 20-items questionnaire was designed. Owing to the past instrument have already proved the existence of three factors within sense of life meaning, CFA was directly applied for the research. This part is categorized into three models: (1) The initial model: the result reveals that two items' factor loadings are under 0.55., and need to be delete. (2) The modified model: After deleted two items, the model retested, and reveal firstly, the whole applicableness is acceptable; secondly, item quality test isn't under the situation of offending estimates (it means all output data are in an acceptable range); thirdly, internal construct applicableness analysis consisting of component reliability, average variance extracted; AVE (?v), competitive model comparison, and sex-group measurement identity test all qualified. (3) Cross-validity model: For the modified model, the research investigate another samples (N = 405), and after the re-verification, the outcome present acceptable whole applicableness. Therefore, the three factors 18 item scale of "Sense of Life Meaning" is built.

Aim: To determine the efficacy of vascular closure devices (VCDs) for hemostasis following transfemoral percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs). Methods: This two‐group pre–post‐test observational study with purposive sampling enrolled 73 patients between January, 2014 and February, 2015. The patients were allocated to either the intervention (vascular closure devices group, n = 34) or the control group (manual compression [MC] group, n = 39). Questionnaires were used to assess their demographic and clinical characteristics, vascular complications, visual analogue scale score for pain, and discomfort levels. Pain and discomfort were measured before and after the PCI. Results: Vascular complications were observed in 15 (44.1%) VCD patients and 13 (33.3%) MC patients, with no significant between‐group difference. However, the VCD patients had a higher relative risk of bruising, hematomas, and need for further treatment. After the PCI, the pain scores and discomfort levels increased significantly in both groups, but the VCD patients had more successful hemostasis, less pain, and less physical and psychological discomfort (lower‐limb numbness, shoulder pain, restlessness, and worrying about walking ability, being unable to lift heavy objects in the future, and taking time off from work). Conclusion: The VCDs seem to be superior to the MCs, providing more successful hemostasis, less pain and discomfort, and earlier ambulation after a transfemoral PCI. These findings aid clinical nurses in understanding the risk of vascular complications, discomfort, and pain that are associated with VCD use for improving the quality of clinical care and help clinicians in determining the appropriate hemostatic method for patients undergoing a transfemoral PCI, particularly in the Chinese population. Purpose – This paper offers insights into the consumption motives and purchasing behaviour of that market segment in Taiwan against the background of increasing consumption of luxury fashion brands by young female consumers in Asian countries. Design/methodology/approach – Analysis of data collected using face-to-face semi-structured interviews with 23 fashion-conscious females aged 18-32 years was completed and new empirical insights are offered. Findings – The study found a high level of involvement in the world of luxury fashion retailing. Asian consumers devoured media commentary, drew inspiration from female celebrities and treated information-seeking and discussion of luxury fashion brands with friends as a serious and enjoyable pursuit. The social status conferred by expensive fashion wear motivated them to spend on luxury brands even if their discretionary income was limited. Potential guilt in so doing was assuaged by rationalising that the quality was good and the purchase would be long lasting. Marketers targeting this valuable segment should communicate appeals to an aspirational lifestyle in traditional and social media, effective at reaching young women. Originality/value – The study reported in this paper contributes to the limited published research into the luxury-marketing sector in Asia by examining the buying behaviour of female Strawberry Generation consumers in Taiwan. It is the first to research and investigate the meanings attached to luxury by these individuals in the collectivist culture of Taiwan, as well as their motivations, and the factors influencing their purchase of luxury fashions. The study thus contributes with new knowledge to the buying of luxury fashion products by young female Taiwanese consumers, which may be extended to other collectivist cultures in Asia. Childhood asthma, a growing health concern, has been associated with low birth weight and elevated body mass index. This study tested the hypothesis that overweight and obese adolescents with a history of low birth weight are at even greater risk of developing asthma. A cohort of 75,871 junior high school students was screened for asthma during 1995–1996 in Taiwan. Birth weight and estimated gestational age were obtained from the birth registry. Logistic regression and simple regression analyses were adjusted for confounding variables. Asthma was more prevalent in those with birth weights below 3,000 g and higher adolescent body mass indexes. Furthermore, those with both characteristics were consistently most likely to have asthma. Whether the asthma diagnosis among low-birth-weight subjects was assigned by physicians or medical questionnaire, the risks were elevated for both overweight (physician diagnosis: odds ratio = 1.41; medical questionnaire: odds ratio = 1.25) and obese (physician diagnosis: odds ratio = 1.38; medical questionnaire: odds ratio = 1.47) boys as well as overweight (physician diagnosis: odds ratio = 1.63; medical questionnaire: odds ratio = 1.30) and obese (physician diagnosis: odds ratio = 1.44; medical questionnaire: odds ratio = 1.32) girls (P < 0.05). Low birth weight predisposes one to develop asthma, and excess body mass amplifies the risk. A sex difference was observed. Forest is the largest ecosystem in the land area of Taiwan. In the past, most of the studies on the evaluation of forest ecosystem services were regional, and therefore lacked national assessment. This study uses a market value method and a benefit transfer method to assess the value of the forest ecosystem services in Taiwan, and expounds the link between ecosystem services and the effectiveness of forestry management and conservation. Preliminarily, it is estimated that the total value of forest ecosystem services in 2016 was approximately NT $749,278 million (equal to approximately 47.6 billion U.S. dollars, PPP-corrected), accounting for 4.28% of the GDP in 2016. The quotation of unit price data has a huge impact on the final assessment results of forest ecosystem service value, and therefore it is necessary use it appropriately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are an emerging class of artificial environmental chemicals that have multiple potentially harmful effects on health. The largest Science Park in Taiwan discharges wastewater containing PFASs into the Keya River, and a high concentration of PFASs has been found in this river and its aquatic creatures. We conducted a cross-sectional study from 2016 to 2017 of 397 subjects aged 55-75 years living near the river and evaluated the association of PFASs with metabolic syndrome and related outcomes. The results indicated that perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) levels were positively associated with serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (P for trend = 0.03) and that perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and PFOS levels were positively correlated with uric acid levels (P for trend = 0.03 and 0.03). Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) levels were negatively associated with serum triglyceride levels (P for trend = 0.014 and < 0.01). After excluding lipid-lowering drug users, the association between certain PFAS levels and the LDL level was significantly enhanced, but the downward trends of serum triglyceride levels were weakened. When stratified by sex, PFNA (P for trend <0.01), perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS) (P for trend <0.01), and PFOS (P for trend <0.01) showed positive associations with the uric acid level only among males. In conclusion, our results showed that associations were consistently null between PFASs and metabolic syndrome. PFAS levels were associated with serum lipids, and lipid-lowering drugs may interfere with this relationship. Certain PFASs were found to be positively associated with uric acid levels, especially in males. Further studies are warranted to clarify the causal relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shift work is a prevalent workplace exposure, which increases the possibility of unhealthy behaviours and circadian rhythm disruptions and elevates the risk of metabolic diseases and adverse reproductive outcomes. But its potential of increasing the risk of postpartum weight retention remains uncertain. This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal shift work prior to conception and postpartum weight retention, and to identify modifiable factors during pregnancy for prevention. We analysed data from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study, a prospective cohort of Taiwanese women who gave birth in 2005. We examined the pre-conceptional shift work status of 13,575 mothers and their body weight before pregnancy, before delivery, six and eighteen months after delivery. We used multivariable linear models to examine associations and effect modifications. Maternal shift work before pregnancy was significantly associated with increased postpartum weight retention at six and eighteen months (β-estimate for six months: 0.19-kilogram, 95% CI: 0.03-0.34; eighteen months: 0.23-kilogram, 95% CI: 0.04-0.40). The association between shift work and weight retention at six months postpartum was stronger among mothers who were overweight or obese before pregnancy than mothers with normal weight. This study showed the impact of shift work on postpartum weight retention and suggested a stronger association among mothers with overweight or obesity before pregnancy.

Aim: Cesarean section delivery is associated with microbiota disruption and immuno-dysregulation during childhood, but the association with Kawasaki disease remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the association between Cesarean section and Kawasaki disease., Methods: We examined the association between Kawasaki disease between six and eighteen months and Cesarean section within a birth cohort of 15,796 mother-infant pairs in Taiwan. The associations were assessed with Poisson regression in the study population, in the 1:2 propensity score-matched subpopulation, and compared with febrile convulsion, trauma and accidents during the same interval as negative control outcomes., Results: Cesarean section was found to increase the risk of Kawasaki disease among overall population (adjusted relative risk [aRR]: 2.22, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.14-4.34) and the matched subpopulation (aRR: 2.29, 95 % CI: 1.14-4.68 in PS-matched subpopulation). Background: Household incense burning is a common ritual behavior in the Asia-Pacific region but has been associated with inferior developmental outcomes in term infants. We aimed to examine these associations among preterm infants., Methods: Information from 1190 mother-infant pairs during 6- and 18-month follow-up to the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study was examined for associations between household incense burning exposure and infant neurodevelopmental milestone achievement using multivariable Cox proportional hazard model with propensity score weighting, along with stratified, sensitivity, and decomposition analysis., Results: Household incense burning exposure was associated with delayed gross motor milestone achievement among all preterm infants according to the Cox model and after propensity score weighting. Meanwhile, associations for delayed development were found in gross motor domain milestones among late preterm infants, while fine motor domain delay was found among other preterm infants. Furthermore, the associations between household incense burning status and gross motor milestone delays were attenuated by the interaction between higher education level and household incense burning exposure status., Conclusions: Household incense burning exposure was associated with delays, and the motor domains affected differed according to degree of prematurity. Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUA), are common persistent environmental organic pollutants. Animal studies have indicated that PFAS influence inflammatory responses and lung development. However, whether prenatal or childhood PFAS exposure affects children's lung function remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate both in utero exposure and childhood exposure to PFAS and the relationships between them and lung function development in childhood., Methods: In total, 165 children were recruited from the Taiwan Birth Panel Study (TBPS). Cord blood plasma and children's serum were collected when they were eight years old. PFAS levels were analysed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. When these children reached eight years of age, we administered detailed questionnaires and lung function examinations., Results: The mean concentrations of PFOA, PFOS, PFNA and PFUA in cord blood among the 165 study children were 2.4, 6.4, 6.0, and 15.4 ng/mL, respectively. The mean concentrations in serum from eight-year-olds were 2.7, 5.9, 0.6, and 0.3 ng/mL, respectively. At eight years of age, the mean FEV1 (forced expiratory volume per sec), FVC (forced vital capacity), PEF (peak expiratory flow) and FEV1/FVC values were 1679 mL, 1835 mL, 3846 mL/s and 92.0%, respectively. PFOA, PFOS, PFNA and PFUA levels in cord blood were inversely associated with FEV1, FVC and PEF values. The PFOS concentration in cord blood was the most consistently correlated with decreasing lung function before and after adjusting for confounding factors. The PFOS concentration was also significantly inversely correlated with lung function in subgroups with lower birth weight and allergic rhinitis., Conclusions: Our cohort study revealed that the concentrations of PFOA, PFOS, PFNA and PFUA were higher in cord blood than in serum from eight-year-olds. Some trends were also noted between intrauterine PFOS exposure and children's decreasing FEV1, FVC and PEF, especially in subgroups with lower birth weight and allergic rhinitis. Breast cancer (BC) is a common cancer in women worldwide; however, the incidence of BC is increasing in younger women, possibly associated with the environment. Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are one of endocrine disruptors that accumulate in environment and impact human health. This study aimed to investigate whether the PFAS and BC are associated. We enrolled 120 BCE patients and 119 controls at National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) and also collected bio-specimen and questionnaire from 2013 to 2015. All subjects' plasma PFAS levels were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method with electrospray ionization (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS). A logistic regression model was used to estimate the association between PFAS and BC. In the ≤50 years age group, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) was 2.34 (95% CI = 1.02, 5.38) for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) exposure per natural log unit increase. After stratifying the estrogen receptor (ER) status and age group, we obtained a positive association for PFHxS and PFOS concentrations with respect to the risk of ER positive tumors for ≤50 years age group. In conclusion, we found that PFAS were associated with the BC risk of ER positive tumors in young Taiwanese women. Background: Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infections have been increasingly reported worldwide and are associated with nasal colonization. In Taiwan, available data disclosed a similar trend. We conducted a study for the updated childhood nasal MRSA carriage., Methods: From July 2005 to December 2010, children aged between 2 months and 5 years who presented for a well-child health care visit to a medical center or from kindergarten/daycare center were invited and a nasal swab specimen was obtained for the detection of MRSA. All MRSA isolates were characterized., Results: A total of 3226 children were included and the rate of nasal MRSA carriage was 10.2%. Children aged 2-6 months and >3 years were significantly associated with MRSA carriage, while pneumococcus colonization (p = 0.033) and breastfeeding (p = 0.025) were negatively associated with MRSA carriage. Of the 330 MRSA isolates, a total of 13 pulsotypes with two major patterns (type C, 47.0% and D, 29%) were identified. Most MRSA isolates belonged to two major clones, characterized as sequence type 59 (ST59)/pulsotype C/staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCCmec) IV/Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-negative (45.8%) and ST59/pulsotype D/SCCmec V T /PVL-positive (22.7%). Two new clones as ST 508/SCCmec IV (9.7%) and ST573/SCCmec IV (7.3%) emerged and increased markedly since 2007., Conclusion: Between 2005 and 2010, 10.2% of healthy children in northern Taiwan carried MRSA in anterior nares, with the highest carriage rate for infants aged 2-6 months. Background: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are pollutants that tend to accumulate in the environment and organisms. The animal and human studies to date have focused on thyroid function, but the results are inconsistent., Methods: A sample of 118 mother-infant pairs was obtained from the Taiwan Birth Panel Study (TBPS). Cord blood PFASs levels were evaluated using the Waters ACQUITY UPLC system coupled with a Waters Quattro Premier XE triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, and cord blood thyroid hormones were assessed using a Roche Analytics E170 modular analyser (Roche Diagnostics, Mannheim, Germany). PFASs concentrations were analysed in the final models to examine the associations between cord blood PFASs levels and thyroid hormone concentrations., Results: The cord blood perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) concentration was negatively associated with the cord blood thyroxine (T4) concentration [per ln unit: adjusted β (95% confidence interval, CI) = -0.458(-0.916, -0.001)]. Moreover, the level of cord blood thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) was positively associated with the cord blood PFOS concentration [per ln unit: adjusted β (95% confidence interval, CI) = 0.346(0.101, 0.592)]. The sex stratified effects of PFOS on T4 were suggestive of differential effects in high-exposure groups compared with low-exposure group in boys., Conclusions: We found that cord blood thyroid hormone levels are affected by PFASs, with a negative association between T4 and PFOS and a positive association between TSH and PFOS. Objective: The aim of this study is to present the incidence, prenatal and postnatal findings, and modes of ascertainment in chromosomal deletions detected at amniocentesis., Materials and Methods: We reviewed all the cases with chromosomal deletions, which were detected by amniocentesis in Mackay Memorial Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, between January 1987 and December 2012. Data on the locations and types of deletion, reasons for performing amniocentesis, maternal age, gestational age at amniocentesis, fetal karyotypes, inheritance of deletions, and relative prenatal findings were collected., Results: Amniocentesis was performed in 33,305 cases within this period of time. Among these, 31 cases of chromosomal deletions were considered for the study. The mean gestational age at amniocentesis was 21.0 weeks (range from 15 weeks to 32 weeks) and the mean maternal age at amniocentesis was 32.1 years (range from 26 years to 37 years). Nineteen cases (61.3%) manifested fetal structural abnormalities on ultrasound, nine (29.0%) presented no ultrasound abnormalities, and three had an unknown status. The main modes of ascertainment included abnormal ultrasound findings in 10 cases (32.2%), advanced maternal age in 11 cases (35.5%), abnormal maternal serum screening results in six cases (19.6%), and other reasons in four cases (13.0%). Of the 27 cases with known inheritance, the deletion was inherited in two (6.6%) and de novo in 25 (92.6%). Males accounted for 11 (35.5%) and females for 20 (64.5%) cases. Chromosomal deletions are more often to occur in chromosomal 5(4 cases, 12.9%), chromosomal 18 (4 cases, 12.9%), chromosomal 4 (3 cases, 9.7%), chromosomal 7 (3 cases, 9.7%), chromosomal 10 (3 cases, 9.7%), chromosomal 11 (3 cases, 9.7%), and chromosomal 1 (2 cases, 6.5%). There were four cases of chromosomal mosaicism: two involved chromosome 5, one involved chromosome 10, and one involved chromosome 18. Twenty-three cases (74.2%) had terminal deletions and the other eight cases (26.7%) had interstitial-type deletions., Conclusion: In summary, we have presented the results of prenatal diagnosis for chromosomal deletions using amniocentesis. Chromosomal deletions are more likely to occur in females and more often in chromosomal 5p and 18q. Prenatal diagnosis at amniocentesis is frequently associated with advanced maternal age, abnormal ultrasound findings, and abnormal maternal serum screening. The frequency of ascertainment in chromosome deletion seems to be directly correlated with advanced maternal age and abnormal ultrasound findings.
