Waste liquid streams from distillery were a hurdle in conventional wastewater treatment due to extreme high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and fluctuating feed conditions. A recently commissioned full-scale external circulation sludge bed (ECSB) was applied at a malt whiskey distillery in northeast Taiwan. Start-up of the new ECSB system, which has a total volume of 490 m3 with diameter of 6.55 m (ø) and height of 15.9 m (H), was performed by gradual increasing influent flow rates from zero to the design value of 300 m3 day−1 in the first 90 days. In the subsequent 204 days, both influent flow rates (0–389 m3 day−1) and COD concentrations (2.8–18.1 kg L−1) were highly fluctuated due to diverse batches from the distillery. However, effective bioremediation (COD removal 95.1 ± 2.4%) and biogas production (1195 ± 724 L day−1) were achieved in this system. Intensively, the Imhoff tests were carried out and shown the settled solids concentration by 0.5 ± 0.4 mL L−1, while size distributions of granular sludge were analyzed and observed by SEM-EDS. In addition, developments of the anaerobic systems (including lab, pilot, and full scale from the simplest reactor to the latest ECSB) applied in whiskey wastewater treatment were reviewed with their operational parameters for comparing performances of various anaerobic systems. In general, real-time monitoring and feasible operation strategies were critical to successfully run the system by producing clean energy simultaneously. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop and test a model of team performance by applying social exchange and social capital perspectives in a single model setting. It hypothesizes that team performance is indirectly affected by politics through leader–member capitalization (LMC) and by ethical leadership through leader–member exchange (LMX). Meanwhile, team identification is hypothesized to moderate the relationships between politics and LMC and between ethical leadership and LMX. Design/methodology/approach: The hypotheses of this study were empirically tested using a survey of work teams from the banking and insurance industry in Taipei, Taiwan. Findings: The relationship between team performance and ethical leadership is fully mediated by LMX, while the indirect relationship between team performance and politics is mediated via both LMC and LMX. Team identification positively moderates the relationship between ethical leadership and LMX. Originality/value: This study is one of the few to examine the mediating roles of LMC and LMX simultaneously in team performance development. This study provides several key findings that complement the existing literature by evaluating fresh associations among LMC, LMX and their determinants and moderator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a study on the determination of chemical and biofunctional components in six varierities of brown rice from Taiwan. The study reveals that the Koshihikari variety had the highest contents of crude ash and protein in which crop year had significant impact on the moisture content. It adds that japonica type had a higher content of ϒ-oryzanol compared to indica type.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effectiveness and complications associated with the use of bevacizumab, an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agent, in the treatment of prethreshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). DESIGN: A multicenter, retrospective case series. METHODS: Data from patients who had received intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) injections for the treatment of ROP were collected from 4 medical centers in Taiwan. The main outcome measures were the regression of ROP and the complications that were associated with the IVB injections. RESULTS: In total, 162 eyes from 85 patients were included in the study. After receiving IVB injections, 143 eyes (88%) exhibited ROP regression. Fourteen eyes (9%) required additional laser treatment for ROP regression after the absence of a positive response to the IVB injections. Three eyes (2%) progressed to stage 4 ROP and required vitrectomies to reattach the retinas. Two eyes (1%) received 1 additional IVB injection to decrease persistent plus disease. All of the eyes (100%) had attached retinas after the various treatments that they received. The major ocular complications that were associated with IVB injections included vitreous or preretinal hemorrhage in 2 eyes (1%); cataract in 1 eye (1%); and exotropia in 1 eye (1%). No notable systemic complications related to the IVB injections were observed. CONCLUSIONS: IVB injection seems to be an effective and well-tolerated method of treating prethreshold ROP. Laser therapy may still be required as a backup treatment for patients who do not respond to an IVB injection or for those in whom ROP worsens after an IVB injection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Supergenes consist of co-adapted loci that segregate together and are associated with adaptive traits. In the fire ant Solenopsis invicta , two 'social' supergene variants regulate differences in colony queen number and other traits. Suppressed recombination in this system is maintained, in part, by a greater than 9 Mb inversion, but the supergene is larger. Has the supergene in S. invicta undergone multiple large inversions? The initial gene content of the inverted allele of a supergene would be the same as that of the wild-type allele. So, how did the inversion increase in frequency? To address these questions, we cloned one extreme breakpoint in the fire ant supergene. In doing so, we found a second large (greater than 800 Kb) rearrangement. Furthermore, we determined the temporal order of the two big inversions based on the translocation pattern of a third small fragment. Because the S. invicta supergene lacks evolutionary strata, our finding of multiple inversions may support an introgression model of the supergene. Finally, we showed that one of the inversions swapped the promoter of a breakpoint-adjacent gene, which might have conferred a selective advantage relative to the non-inverted allele.
