Flavored cigarettes encourage youth smoking and deter quitting. No country in Asia-Pacific, a region with some of the world's highest smoking rates, has regulated tobacco flavors. We examined market data, academic literature, and gray literature to describe what is known on flavored cigarettes in the Asia-Pacific region. Of the 12 countries for which market data were available, ten had substantial flavored cigarette market shares ranging from 10% to 97%. With no regulations and growing markets for flavor capsule variants, the tobacco industry's ongoing promotion of flavored cigarettes, which targets primarily youth and women, is expected to drive further increases in smoking prevalence. There are significant research and monitoring gaps on the industry's marketing tactics and use of flavored cigarettes in the region. Given the large market shares, Asia-Pacific countries stand to benefit substantially from a tobacco flavors ban. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study investigated whether the tongue inspection technique in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can be used as a noninvasive auxiliary diagnostic tool to differentiate the subtypes of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and as an indicator of therapeutic efficacy. Subjects and methods: A total of 198 outpatients from the China Medical University Hospital were recruited. The control group comprised 50 healthy adults. The remaining 148 patients were diagnosed with gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, or Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection using upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, biopsy, and Campylobacter-like organism test. Tongue appearance was evaluated by a physician experienced in clinical Chinese medicine. Images of the tongue were immediately recorded using a high-resolution digital camera system. Results: The affected group of 148 patients received an 8-week course of ulcer therapy. Of these, 108 patients infected with Hp were subjected to triple therapy in the first week. Forty-nine of these 108 cases infected with Hp completed secondary examination of upper GI endoscopy and tongue inspection. Forty-one of 49 cases (83.7%) were fully cured of Hp infection. These results showed that the color of the tongue body did not change in the cured patients; however, tongue fur was markedly thinner with a color change to white (p < 0.05), while sub-lingual veins with engorgement (p < 0.05) and blood stasis (p < 0.01) improved after the ulcer healed and Hp was eradicated. Conclusions: TCM tongue inspection can be potentially used as a noninvasive auxiliary diagnostic method and as an indicator for clinical outcomes for patients with PUD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chemical compositions of gas discharges from the Kueishantao (KST) hydrothermal field changed dramatically from 2000 to 2014. In this study, we established a gas mixing model for the KST gases. The N 2 , Ar, and CO 2 contents were mixed from a magmatic endmember with CO 2 of about 990 mmol/mol, a hydrothermal and an atmospheric endmember enriched in N 2 and Ar. More than 71% KST gas components were mantle-derived/magmatic. The calculated endmember N 2 /Ar ratio and Ar contents of the hydrothermal endmember (percolated fluid) are about 140 and 5.28–5.52 mmol/mol, respectively. This relatively elevated N 2 /Ar ratio was probably caused by the thermogenic addition of N 2 . The log(CH 4 /CO 2 ) values of the KST gas samples correlate well with the mixing temperature that estimated from the mixing ratio between the percolated fluid and the magmatic endmember. It is indicated that the KST CH 4 and CO 2 may have attained chemical equilibrium. The temporal variations of the KST gas compositions are determined by the mixing ratio, which is dependent on the magmatic activity underneath the KST field. With the decreasing of magmatic activity since 2005, the proportion of the hydrothermal endmember increased, along with the increasing of N 2 , Ar, and CH 4 contents. This study proposed an effective model to quantitatively assess the sources of gas components discharged from submarine hydrothermal vents. In addition, it is suggested that the mixing between a magmatic and a hydrothermal endmember may play an important role in the concentrations of CO 2 and CH 4 in hydrothermal gas discharges. Background: Tinnitus and uveitis have shared commonality in pathophysiology in terms of autoimmunity. However, no studies that have linked any association between the conditions of tinnitus and uveitis., Methods: This is a retrospective study conducted from the Taiwan National Health Insurance database in order to investigate whether tinnitus patients are at increased risk of uveitis. Patients newly diagnosed with tinnitus between 2001 and 2014 were recruited and followed up until 2018. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of uveitis., Results: A total of 31,034 tinnitus patients and 124,136 matched comparisons were analyzed. Tinnitus patients were found to have a significantly higher cumulative incidence for uveitis than those without the diagnosis of tinnitus with incidence rate of 1.68 (95% CI 1.55-1.82) per 10 000 person-months for tinnitus group and 1.48 (95% CI 1.42-1.54) per 10 000 person-months for non-tinnitus group., Conclusion: Tinnitus patients were found to have increased risk of developing uveitis.
