The purpose of the study is to explore the influence of teaching evaluations on teachers in that they might try to please their students by giving higher grades in order to get higher teaching evaluation scores. To achieve this purpose, the study analyzed the correlations between teaching evaluation scores, student's final grades and course fail rates, and it also examined whether students' final scores and course fail rates are important predictors of teaching evaluation scores. The study used teaching evaluation scores and students' final grades of the courses offered in the fall term of academic year 2014 and the spring term of academic year 2015 in one university in Taiwan as research samples. The results showed that both student's final grades and course fail rates are predictors of teaching evaluation scores. There is a positive correlation between teaching evaluation scores and students' final grades, and a negative correlation between teaching evaluation scores and course fail rates. Based on the findings, the study inferred that the implementation of teaching evaluations may influence teachers to give better grades and lower course requirements to please their students in order to get higher teaching evaluation scores.

The aim of this study was to apply biochemical parameters to Onychostoma barbatulum to understand whether Wuling Farm activities have caused organic pollution from xenoestrogens to flow into surrounding streams and thereby affected area aquatic ecosystems. Individuals of the Taiwan shovel-jaw carp (O. barbatulum) were collected by fyke netting in the Cijiawan, Kaoshan, and Yusheng Rivers in the protected area of Shei-Pa National Park and in the Ikawan River outside the protected areas from 4–5 June 2015 to 20–21 September 2015. The collected male individuals of O. barbatulum were divided into two groups. In the first group monooxygenase (Mon) activity, glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity, and vitellogenin (VTG) concentration in the liver were measured right after they were captured. Those in the second group were acclimated for 14 days and then exposed to 0 (control) or 10 ng/L 17β-estradiol for 10 days and then measured for changes in Mon, GST, and VTG in their livers. The value of VTG concentrations in O. barbatulum individuals collected from the Ikawan River was 2.12 ± 1.62 μg PO42+/g protein, which was the highest among all samples, followed by those collected from the Yusheng River (0.78 ± 1.00 μg PO42+/g protein). Individuals collected from the Yusheng River had the highest liver Mon activity (4.16 ± 1.08△A650/30 min/g protein) and the highest GST activity (1.58 ± 1.13 △A340/20 min/g protein), followed by those from the Ikawan River (Mon: 3.63 ± 1.13 △A650/30 min/g protein; GST: 1.24 ± 0.73 △A340/20 min/g protein). Comprehensive analyses showed that Mon and GST activities and VTG concentrations in livers measured right after being collected were lower than individuals exposed to 10 ng 17β-estradiol/L in the laboratory. Induced VTG concentrations were 9.87 ± 0.89 μg PO42+/g protein, Mon activity 8.02 ± 1.74 △A650/30 min/g protein, and GST activity 3.24 ± 0.62 △A340/20 min/g protein, indicating that farming activities have not significantly affected these aquatic organisms. However, pollution sources are still releasing pollutants containing xenoestrogens into the Yusheng River and Ikawan River. The present study established a fast and convenient bioassay method for aqueous ecosystems using the prawn estradiol equivalent concentration (p-EEQ) of male Macrobrachium nipponense , which produce vitellogenin (VTG) after exposure to xeno-estrogens. This method was then used to determine the concentrations of xeno-estrogen pollutants in the rivers of Taiwan. To establish the calibration curve for the concentrations based on the p-EEQ, the induced VTG content was determined using the alkali-labile phosphate method after male M. nipponense were exposed to 0, 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000 ng/L of 17β-estradiol for 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14 days, respectively. The results of the experiments showed that the induced VTG content in all of the experimental groups stabilized after 10 days, except for the 10,000 ng/L experimental group, in which the induced VTG content decreased after 10 days. A 17β-estradiol–VTG 10day response curve was then established based on the induced VTG content in the 0, 10, 100 and 1000 ng/L experimental groups at day 10. After establishing the curve, male M. nipponense were captured from the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Chuo-shui River, the Beigang River, the Jishui River, the Agongdian River and the Sichong River in Taiwan, and the VTG content in these prawns was determined. In addition, the p-EEQ in the waters was determined based on the VTG content, and the estradiol equivalent concentration (EEQ) in the waters was also measured immediately after sampling using the solid-phase extraction-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (SPE-ELISA) method. The results showed that the p-EEQ in the middle and lower reaches of the rivers in certain parts of Taiwan ranged from 38 to 400 ng/L, and the detection rate was 100%. Moreover, the EEQ ranged from 7.9 to 92.9 ng/L, and the detection rate was 42.9%, indicating that most of the middle and lower reaches of the rivers in Taiwan were polluted by xeno-estrogens. The 17β-estradiol concentrations determined based on the p-EEQ were all higher than those based on the EEQ (SPE-ELISA method). The results of the present study showed that the use of M. nipponense to determine the p-EEQ in environmental waters provided advantages that included a high detection rate, high sensitivity and convenience. Background/Purpose: To explore Taiwanese caregivers'' decision making experiences of accepting a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube for their family member. Methods: A phenomenological approach was used for the interview and analysis. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 26 caregivers of patients who had percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube in southern Taiwan. Results: Five themes were recognized to reflect caregivers'' decision making experiences with a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy: awareness of suffering, awareness of options, uncertainty, opportunity, and contentment with the decision. Conclusion: Caregivers'' decisions to proceed with a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy procedure were mediated by desires to relieve patients'' suffering. To empower caregivers to make enteral feeding decisions, nurses must provide sufficient information about percutaneous gastrostomy tubes and their care, support decision making and help to identify an opportunity for gastrostomy tube placement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of chlordane and lindane on morphological changes and endocrine disruption in male Green neon shrimp (Neocaridina denticulata). In this experiment, individuals of N. denticulata, a common inhabitant of freshwater systems in Taiwan, were exposed to chlordane (1 and 10ng/l) and lindane (0.1 and 1μg/l). Morphological changes and reproductive hormone levels were observed following four weeks exposure. According to our findings, an increase in estrogen, a reduction in testosterone, and morphological alternations of the masculine appendage were observed in both chlordane- and lindane-treated shrimp, while induction of a vitellogenin-like protein appeared only in shrimp treated with 10ng/l chlordane. An endocrine disruption effect on N. denticulata was demonstrated, and may apply to other organochlorine pesticides or endocrine disruption chemicals. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
