Abstract: Aims: The joint effect of obesity and asthma on hyperlipidemia has never been explored. We aim to examine (1) the association of dyslipidemia and asthma, (2) the interaction effect of asthma and obesity on hyperlipidemia, and (3) whether a gender difference existed in the above relationships. Methods: Between 2009 and 2010, 10- to 15-year-old children were recruited from 7 schools and 2 hospitals in Northern Taiwan. The population consisted of 237 asthmatic children and 225 non-asthmatic controls, and was further divided into four groups: non-obese controls, obese controls, non-obese asthmatics, and obese asthmatics. Measurements included anthropometric measures and blood samples for analysis of metabolic factors. The Cook''s criteria were used to define childhood metabolic syndrome. General linear models were used to analyze how lipid profiles were associated with obesity and asthma. Results: Total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels increased progressively in the group order obese asthmatics>non-obese asthmatics>obese controls>non-obese controls. In boys, low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were significantly higher in obese asthmatics compared to obese non-asthmatics, with a mean difference of 6.2mmol/L in the general linear model. We also discovered a significant interactive effect of obesity and asthma on hyperlipidemia in boys (p for interaction=0.03). Conclusions: Asthma was associated with higher low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and this association was amplified in overweight and obese subjects. In order to understand gas hydrate related seafloor features in the near shore area off SW Taiwan, a deep-towed sidescan sonar and sub-bottom profiler survey was conducted in 2007. Three profiles of high-resolution sub-bottom profiler reveal the existence of five gas seeps (G96, GS1, GS2, GS3 and GS4) and one pockmark (PM) in the study area. Gas seeps and pockmark PM are shown in lines A and C, while no gas venting feature is observed along line B. This is the first time that a gas-hydrate related pockmark structure has been imaged off SW Taiwan. The relatively high backscatter intensity in our sidescan sonar images indicates the existence of authigenic carbonates or chemosynthetic communities on the seafloor. More than 2,000 seafloor photos obtained by a deep-towed camera (TowCam) system confirm the relatively high backscatter intensity of sidescan sonar images related to bacteria mats and authigenic carbonates formation at gas seep G96 and pockmark PM areas. Water column gas flares are observed in sidescan sonar images along lines A and C. Likewise, EK500 echo sounder images display the gas plumes above gas seep G96, pockmark PM and gas seep GS1; the gas plumes heights reach about 150, 100 and 20 m from seafloor, respectively. Based on multichannel seismic reflection (MCS) profiles, an anticline structure trending NNE-SSW is found beneath gas seep G96, pockmark PM and gas seep GS2. It implies that the gas venting features are related to the anticline structure. A thermal fluid may migrate from the anticline structure to the ridge crest, then rises up to the seafloor along faults or fissures. The seafloor characteristics indicate that the gas seep G96 area may be in a transitional stage from the first to second stage of a gas seep self-sealing process, while the pockmark PM area is from the second to final stage. In the pockmark PM area, gas venting is observed at eastern flank but not at the bottom while authigenic carbonates are present underneath the pockmark. It implies that the fluid migration pathways could have been clogged by carbonates at the bottom and the current pathway has shifted to the eastern flank of the pockmark during the gas seep self-sealing process. The southernmost Okinawa Trough back-arc basin is an active and young basin formed just after the collision of the Philippine Sea Plate against the Eurasian continental margin. The back-arc extension occurs intensively because of the southward or southeastward migration of the southernmost Ryukyu Arc, or the roll-back of the Philippine Sea Plate. To better understand the active tectonics and volcanism of the southernmost Okinawa Trough, we have conducted deep-tow sub-bottom profiler and side-scan sonar surveys across the back-arc basin. Our results show that the volcanism of the southernmost Okinawa Trough is distributed in the southern half of the back-arc basin and occurs along some linear or branched zones roughly parallel to the trough axis. Volcanic seamounts are obviously located along the central depression of the basin and their sizes show lateral variation. On the other hand, the northern half of the southernmost Okinawa Trough back-arc basin has almost no volcanic activity, but contains more brittle normal faults. It is noted that gas plumes out of seafloor are generally associated with hydrothermal mounds or activities, instead of volcanic seamounts. We suggest that the more complete rifting of the southernmost Okinawa Trough back-arc is limited to the east of ~122o30′E. To the west of ~122o30'E, the back-arc extension could be still influenced by the inherited NE-SW trending structures of the continental crust created during the former Taiwan orogeny in this area. • The volcanism in the southernmost Okinawa Trough is distributed in the southern half of the basin. • The volcanism occurs in linear or branched patterns roughly parallel to the trough axis. • Gas plumes out of seafloor are generally associated with hydrothermal activities. • The more complete back-arc rifting of the Okinawa Trough is limited to the east of ~122o30'E. Abstract: To investigate the recent longitudinal trend of hip fractures (including cervical and trochanteric fractures) in Taiwan''s elderly population (≥65 years), a nationwide descriptive epidemiological study was conducted using the database of the Bureau of National Health Insurance from 1996 through 2002. Frequencies and incidences of hip fracture by gender, fracture site, and age group were estimated, and the 7-year incidence trend was further evaluated. The results showed that a total of 75,482 hip fractures occurred during the study period with an incidence rate of 57.54 per 10,000 per year. Overall incidence significantly increased by 30% (p <0.0001), from 49.56 to 64.37 per 10,000 per year during the 7-year study period. The increase in rates was greater in males (36%) than in females (22%). The average female-to-male ratio was 1.76, lower than those in many countries. In females, the annual incidence of cervical fracture was higher than that of trochanteric fractures throughout the 7 years, while the incidence of trochanteric fractures was higher than cervical fractures each year in males (p <0.0001). The average annual incidence of patients older than 85 years was 9.9 times higher than that of aged 65 to 69 years in females and 7.9 times in males. Development and implementation of public health strategies for hip fractures should more focus on these subgroups in Taiwan''s rapidly aging society. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Longitudinal Valley in eastern Taiwan is generally considered as a collisional suture between the Philippine Sea and the Eurasian plates. Offshore to the northeast of the valley, the Philippine Sea Plate is subducting beneath the Ryukyu Arc. The corner between eastern Taiwan and the Ryukyu Arc system is therefore the transition from plate collision to plate subduction. In consequence, the area has complicated tectonics and frequent earthquakes. In this study, we used marine geophysical data to study the submarine Hualien Ridge that is situated in this plate collision/subduction transition zone. Our results show that the Hualien Ridge is tectonically divided into the active southern part and the inactive northern part. In the southern Hualien Ridge, we find several ~N30°E trending active faults and some could be linked to the active faults in the onshore Milun Tableland. The structures in the southern Hualien Ridge and the Milun Tableland display a pop-up structure that is subject to the oblique compression from the northwestward motion of the Philippine Sea Plate. The ~N30°E trending faults are the results of the transpressional system. However, the Milun Fault, the western boundary of the fault system, probably terminates near 24°03′N, where a pronounced bathymetric depression trending N300° cuts across the whole Hualien Ridge. In fact, all the active faults in the southern Hualien Ridge only appear to the south of the bathymetric depression. In contrast, in the northern Hualien Ridge we only find blind normal faults covered by ~100 m thick sediments. The distinct variation of tectonic activity in the Hualien Ridge underlines the transition from the active collision to inactive collision or partial subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate relative to the Eurasian Plate. • The tectonics of the Hualien Ridge is undergoing a transition from plate collision to subduction. • The submarine Hualien Ridge and the inland Milun Tableland is subject to a transpressional regime. • The structural faults in the Hualien Ridge are composed of an active southern part and an inactive northern part. • The boundary between the southern and northern Hualien ridges is marked by a bathymetric depression. The western termination of the Okinawa Trough is a tectonically complex area in the Ryukyu trench-arc-backarc system. It is a transitional zone between two tectonic regimes. In the eastern part, tectonics with E-W trending normal faulting focal mechanisms indicates an active N-S rifting of the Okinawa Trough. In the western part, tectonics with ENE-WSW left-lateral strike-slip faulting is associated with the general trend of the Taiwan orogenic belt. There is a seismicity gap in between; however, the structure of this transitional zone is not very clear. Based on high-resolution bathymetric data, we find a NE-SW trending structure located between those two tectonic regimes or major seismic zones. This structure could reveal key tectonics of the transitional zone. In order to understand the characteristic of the transitional zone, we have collected several high-resolution seismic reflection profiles, roughly perpendicular to the linear structure offshore Ilan Plain. This structure reveals the tectonic transition from normal faulting in the east to strike-slip faulting in the west. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we compiled recently collected (from 2005 to 2015) and previously reported (published and open access) gravity data, including land, shipborne and satellite-derived data, for Taiwan and its surrounding regions. Based on the cross-over error analysis, all data were adjusted; and, new Free-air gravity anomalies were obtained, shedding light on the tectonics of the region. To obtain the Bouguer gravity anomalies, the densities of land terrain and marine sediments were assumed to be 2.53 and 1.80 g/cm 3 , respectively. The updated gravity dataset was gridded with a spacing of one arc-minute. Several previously unnoticed gravity features are revealed by the new maps and can be used in a broad range of applications: (1) An isolated gravity high is located between the Shoushan and the Kaoping Canyon off southwest Taiwan. (2) Along the Luzon Arc, both Free-air and Bouguer gravity anomaly maps reveal a significant gravity discontinuity feature at the latitude of 21°20′N. (3) In the southwestern Okinawa Trough, the NE-SW trending cross-back-arc volcanic trail (CBVT) marks the low-high gravity anomaly (both Free-air and Bouguer) boundary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to identify the mud diapirs and mud volcanoes off SW Taiwan, we have examined ~1500km long MCS profiles and related marine geophysical data. Our results show ten quasi-linear mud diapirs, oriented NNE-SSW to N-S directions. Thirteen mud volcanoes are identified from the multibeam bathymetric data. These mud volcanoes generally occur on tops of the diapiric structures. Moreover, the active mud flow tracks out of mud volcanoes MV1, MV3 and MV6 are observed through the high backscatter intensity stripes on the sidescan sonar images. The heights of the cone-shaped mud volcanoes range from 65m to 345m, and the diameters at base from 680m to 4100m. These mud volcanoes have abrupt slopes between 5.3° and 13.6°, implying the mudflow is active and highly viscous. In contrast, the flat crests of mud volcanoes are due to relative lower-viscosity flows. The larger cone-shaped mud volcanoes located at deeper water depths could be related to a longer eruption history. The formation of mud diapirs and volcanoes in the study area are ascribed to the overpressure in sedimentary layers, compressional tectonic forces and gas-bearing fluids. Especially, the gas-bearing fluid plays an important role in enhancing the intrusion after the diapirism as a large amount of gas expulsions is observed. Bottom simulating reflectors (BSRs), high methane flux, shallow sulfide/methane interfaces, fluids venting from the seafloor, authigenic carbonates within sediments, methane reefs, and self-biomes are common seafloor features in the area off southwest Taiwan. The geophysical and geochemical signatures of these features suggest a high potential for gas hydrate (GH) reservoirs in the region. The BSRs are typically interpreted as the boundary between free gases and solid hydrate, whereas the upper reaches of the hydrate stability zone and the distribution of gas hydrate in shallow sediments are not well understood. This study shows the first results of a marine controlled-source electromagnetic survey, conducted in the offshore area of SW Taiwan in 2010. The survey aimed to provide electrical resistivity information of the shallow sediments. Three target areas were surveyed: (1) an area to the southeast of the Xiaoliuchiu Island (gas seep G96), (2) an area in the west of the Yung-An Ridge (YAR) and (3) an area in the northwest of the Good Weather Ridge (GWR). In total, fourteen survey lines with a total length of 72km were completed. Our preliminary results show that relatively high resistivity anomalies occur within pockmarks and at gas seepage sites. The apparent resistivity is estimated to be about 1Ohm-m higher than background in G96 and YAR sites, while an anomaly up to 2Ohm-m is found in the GWR. At gas seep site G96, the high resistivity anomaly may be due to the existence of authigenic carbonates; whereas, the high resistivity anomaly in the NW of the GWR site may also be due to the existence of gas hydrate in the shallow seabed. Based on the resistivity anomaly, the gas hydrate saturation is about 16% in the shallow sediments below the pockmark area in the northwest side of the GWR site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are ubiquitous pollutants. Experimental data suggest that they may be associated with adverse health outcomes, including asthma. However, there is little supporting epidemiological evidence., Methods: A total of 231 asthmatic children and 225 nonasthmatic controls, all from northern Taiwan, were recruited in the Genetic and Biomarkers study for Childhood Asthma. Structure questionnaires were administered by face-to-face interview. Serum concentrations of 11 PFCs and levels of immunological markers were also measured. Associations of PFC quartiles with concentrations of immunological markers and asthma outcomes were estimated using multivariable regression models., Results: Nine PFCs were detectable in most children (≥ 84.4%), of which perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was the most abundant (median serum concentrations of 33.9 ng/mL in asthmatics and 28.9 ng/mL in controls). Adjusted odds ratios for asthma among those with the highest versus lowest quartile of PFC exposure ranged from 1.81 (95% CI: 1.02, 3.23) for the perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoA) to 4.05 (95% CI: 2.21, 7.42) for perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA). PFOS, PFOA, and subsets of the other PFCs were positively associated with serum IgE concentrations, absolute eosinophil counts (AEC), eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) concentrations, and asthma severity scores among asthmatics., Conclusions: This study suggests an association between PFC exposure and juvenile asthma. Because of widespread exposure to these chemicals, these findings may be of potential public health concern.

Interleukin (IL)-13 genetic polymorphisms have shown adverse effects on respiratory health. However, few studies have explored the interactive effects between IL-13 haplotypes and environmental exposures on childhood asthma. The aims of our study are to evaluate the effects of IL-13 genetic variants on asthma phenotypes, and explore the potential interaction between IL-13 and household environmental exposures among Taiwanese children. We investigated 3,577 children in the Taiwan Children Health Study from 14 Taiwanese communities. Data regarding children's exposure and disease status were obtained from parents using a structured questionnaire. Four SNPs were tagged accounting for 100% of the variations in IL-13. Multiple logistic regression models with false-discovery rate (FDR) adjustments were fitted to estimate the effects of IL-13 variants on asthma phenotypes. SNP rs1800925, SNP rs20541 and SNP rs848 were significantly associated with increased risks on childhood wheeze with FDR of 0.03, 0.04 and 0.04, respectively. Children carrying two copies of h1011 haplotype showed increased susceptibility to wheeze. Compared to those without carpet use and h1011 haplotype, children carrying h1011 haplotype and using carpet at home had significantly synergistic risks of wheeze (OR, 2.5; 95% CI, 1.4-4.4; p for interaction, 0.01) and late-onset asthma (OR, 4.7; 95% CI, 2.0-10.9; p for interaction, 0.02). In conclusions, IL-13 genetic variants showed significant adverse effects on asthma phenotypes among children. The results also suggested that asthma pathogenesis might be mediated by household carpet use.

Background: The importance of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions on asthma is well documented in literature, but a systematic analysis on the interaction between various genetic and environmental factors is still lacking., Methodology/principal Findings: We conducted a population-based, case-control study comprised of seventh-grade children from 14 Taiwanese communities. A total of 235 asthmatic cases and 1,310 non-asthmatic controls were selected for DNA collection and genotyping. We examined the gene-gene and gene-environment interactions between 17 single-nucleotide polymorphisms in antioxidative, inflammatory and obesity-related genes, and childhood asthma. Environmental exposures and disease status were obtained from parental questionnaires. The model-free and non-parametrical multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) method was used for the analysis. A three-way gene-gene interaction was elucidated between the gene coding glutathione S-transferase P (GSTP1), the gene coding interleukin-4 receptor alpha chain (IL4Ra) and the gene coding insulin induced gene 2 (INSIG2) on the risk of lifetime asthma. The testing-balanced accuracy on asthma was 57.83% with a cross-validation consistency of 10 out of 10. The interaction of preterm birth and indoor dampness had the highest training-balanced accuracy at 59.09%. Indoor dampness also interacted with many genes, including IL13, beta-2 adrenergic receptor (ADRB2), signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6). We also used likelihood ratio tests for interaction and chi-square tests to validate our results and all tests showed statistical significance., Conclusions/significance: The results of this study suggest that GSTP1, INSIG2 and IL4Ra may influence the lifetime asthma susceptibility through gene-gene interactions in schoolchildren. Home dampness combined with each one of the genes STAT6, IL13 and ADRB2 could raise the asthma risk.

We aim to explore the relationships between exposure to dampness, pets, and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) early in life and asthma in Taiwanese children, and to discuss their links to early- and late-onset asthma. We conducted a 1:2 matched case-control study from the Taiwan Children Health Study, which was a nationwide study that recruited 12-to-14 year-old school children in 14 communities. The 579 mothers of the participants were interviewed by telephone about their children's environmental exposures before they were 5 years old, including the in-utero period. Childhood asthma was associated with exposure to early life environmental factors, such as cockroaches (OR=2.16; 95% CI, 1.15-4.07), visible mould (OR=1.75; 95% CI, 1.15-2.67), mildewy odors (OR=5.04; 95% CI, 2.42-10.50), carpet (OR=2.36; 95% CI, 1.38-4.05), pets (OR=2.11; 95% CI, 1.20-3.72), and more than one hour of ETS per day (OR=1.93; 95% CI, 1.16-3.23). The ORs for mildewy odors, feather pillows, and ETS during early childhood were greater among children with late-onset asthma. Cockroaches, carpet, pets, and in-utero exposures to ETS affected the timing of early-onset asthma. Exposure to these factors led to dose-responsiveness in the risk of asthma. And the earlier exposures may trigger the earlier onset. Objectives: Environmental exposure at home, such as dampness, has been shown to have adverse effects on respiratory health. However, few studies explored the association between home dampness and genetic polymorphisms on childhood asthma. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of home dampness and tumour necrosis factor-α gene (TNF-α) on asthma in Taiwanese children., Methods: The authors investigated 3810 schoolchildren in Taiwan Children Health Study from 14 communities. Children's exposure and disease status were measured from a parental questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression models were fitted to estimate the effects of home dampness exposure and TNF-α genotypes on the prevalence of asthma and wheeze., Results: Mildewy odour at home was significantly associated with increased prevalence of lifetime wheeze (OR=1.36, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.77, p for trend=0.04). The effects of water stamp on the wall at home were associated with lifetime asthma and lifetime wheeze. Children with water stamp on the wall at home and TNF-308 A allele had increased risks on lifetime asthma, active asthma and lifetime wheeze. TNF-α showed significant interactive effects with mildewy odour on lifetime asthma (p for interaction=0.01), and with water stamp on the wall at home on lifetime wheeze (p for interaction=0.04). Under stratification by TNF-308 genotypes, we found that the frequency of water stamp on the wall was associated with increased risks of all asthma subcategories and lifetime wheeze among TNF-308 GA or AA genotypes (p for trend<0.05)., Conclusions: Home dampness is a risk factor for asthma and wheeze among children, especially for those with the TNF-308 A allele.

Background: Although studies show that maternal smoking during pregnancy increases the risks of respiratory outcomes in childhood, evidence concerning the effects of household environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure remains inconsistent., Methods: We conducted a population-based study comprised of 5,019 seventh and eighth-grade children in 14 Taiwanese communities. Questionnaire responses by parents were used to ascertain children's exposure and disease status. Logistic regression models were fitted to estimate the effects of ETS exposures on the prevalence of asthma, wheeze, and bronchitic symptoms., Results: The lifetime prevalence of wheeze was 11.6% and physician-diagnosed asthma was 7.5% in our population. After adjustment for potential confounders, in utero exposure showed the strongest effect on all respiratory outcomes. Current household ETS exposure was significantly associated with increased prevalence of active asthma, ever wheeze, wheeze with nighttime awakening, and bronchitis. Maternal smoking was associated with the increased prevalence of a wide range of wheeze subcategories, serious asthma, and chronic cough, but paternal smoking had no significant effects. Although maternal smoking alone and paternal smoking alone were not independently associated with respiratory outcomes, joint exposure appeared to increase the effects. Furthermore, joint exposure to parental smoking showed a significant effect on early-onset asthma (OR, 2.01; 95% CI, 1.00-4.02), but did not show a significant effect on late-onset asthma (OR, 1.17; 95% CI, 0.36-3.87)., Conclusion: We concluded that prenatal and household ETS exposure had significant adverse effects on respiratory health in Taiwanese children.
