The prevalence of hyperuricemia in Taiwan is high, and hyperuricemia has been associated with a risk of developing several diseases. Although the traditional risk factors for hyperuricemia are well known, the relationship between heavy metals and hyperuricemia is still undefined. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between hyperuricemia and heavy metals. A total of 2447 participants (977 males and 1470 females) residing in southern Taiwan were enrolled, and levels of the following heavy metals were measured: lead in blood, and nickel, chromium, manganese, arsenic (As), copper, and cadmium in urine. Hyperuricemia was defined as a serum uric acid level greater than 7.0 mg/dL (416.5 μmol/L) in men and 6.0 mg/dL (357 μmol/L) in women. The participants were divided into two groups: those without hyperuricemia (n = 1821; 74.4%) and those with hyperuricemia (n = 626; 25.6%). Multivariate analysis showed that only high urine As (log per 1 μg/g creatinine; odds ratio, 1.965; 95% confidence interval, 1.449 to 2.664; p < 0.001), young age, male sex, high body mass index, high hemoglobin, high triglycerides, and low estimated glomerular filtration rate were significantly associated with hyperuricemia. In addition, the interactions between Pb × Cd (p = 0.010), Ni × Cu (p = 0.002), and Cr × Cd (p = 0.001) on hyperuricemia were statistically significant. Increasing levels of Pb and Cr yielded an increased prevalence of hyperuricemia, and the effect was progressively greater for increasing Cd. Moreover, increasing levels of Ni yielded an increased prevalence of hyperuricemia, and the effect was progressively greater for increasing Cu. In conclusion, our results show that high urine As is associated with hyperuricemia, and some interactions of heavy metals on hyperuricemia are noted. We also found that young age, male sex, high BMI, high hemoglobin, high triglycerides, and low eGFR were significantly associated with hyperuricemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The incidence of hepatic steatosis is increasing globally, and it is important to identify those at risk to prevent comorbidities. Complete blood count is a simple, convenient, and inexpensive laboratory examination which can be used to obtain white blood cell (WBC) and platelet counts. The aims of this study were to investigate the relationships between WBC and platelet counts with hepatic steatosis, and whether WBC and platelet counts were associated with the severity of hepatic steatosis. We enrolled 1969 participants residing in southern Taiwan who took part in a health survey from June 2016 to September 2018 in this cross-sectional study. None of the participants were heavy alcohol users or had a history of hepatitis B or C. We collected laboratory data, and the severity of hepatic steatosis was determined by abdominal ultrasound. The overall prevalence rate of hepatic steatosis was 42.0%. There were significant trends of stepwise increases in WBC count (p < 0.001) corresponding to the severity of hepatic steatosis. After multivariable linear regression analysis, hepatic steatosis was significantly associated with high WBC count (coefficient β, 0.209; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.055 to 0.364; p = 0.008) and high platelet count (coefficient β, 12.213; 95% CI, 6.092 to 18.334; p < 0.001); also, higher WBC counts corresponded with the severity of hepatic steatosis. Background: The Taiwanese government launched a universal pay-for-performance (P4P) program in 2006 to promote multidisciplinary care for patients with stage 3b-5 chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study aimed to understand the enrollments, care processes, and outcomes of the P4P program between 2010 and 2018.Methods: We conducted a population-based study using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Data. We divided the incident dialysis population into joining and not joining P4P groups based on whether patients had joined the pre-ESRD program before dialysis or not. Trends in the medications prescribed, anemia correction, vascular access preparation before dialysis initiation, and cumulative survival rate were compared.Results: The program included more than 100,000 patients with late-stage CKD. Enrollment increased by almost 100% from 2010 to 2018, with increases seen in those over 75 years old (127.5%), male (96.7%), and earlier CKD stages (≥35% stage 3b in 2018). Females were more likely to stay being enrolled. The joining P4P group was prescribed more appropriate medications, such as erythropoietin-stimulating agents and statins. However, a high number of patients were still prescribed metformin (≥40%) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (≥20%). Compared to the not joining P4P group, the patients in the P4P group had better anemia management, dialysis preparation, and post-dialysis survival.Conclusion: The patients in the joining P4P program group were delivered more appropriate CKD care and were associated with better survival outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between sibling history, parental history and simultaneous sibling and parental history of diabetes, and the presence of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components. Our study comprised 5000 participants from Taiwan Biobank until April, 2014. The participants were stratified into four groups according to sibling and/or parental family history (FH) of DM. MetS was defined as having 3 of the following 5 abnormalities based on the standard of the NCEP ATP III and modified criteria for Asians. The prevalence of MetS and its traits was estimated and compared among the four familial risk strata. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed participants with sibling FH of DM [vs. no FH of DM; odds ratio (OR) 1.815; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.293 to 2.548; p = 0.001], participants with parental FH of DM (vs. no FH of DM; OR 1.771; 95% CI 1.468 to 2.135; p < 0.001), and participants with simultaneous sibling and parental FH of DM (vs. no FH of DM; OR 2.961; 95% CI 2.108 to 4.161; p < 0.001) were significantly associated with MetS. A synergistic effect of sibling FH of DM and parental FH of DM on the association of MetS was also observed. In a nationally representative sample of Taiwan adults, a simultaneous sibling and parental history of diabetes shows a significant, independent association with MetS and its components, except for abdominal obesity. The association highlights the importance of obtaining stratified FH information in clinical practice and may help to identify individuals who should be targeted for screening and early prevention of MetS. Background In the general population, a higher Alternate Healthy Eating Index ( AHEI)-2010 score is related to decreased cardiovascular disease ( CVD) risk. Few studies have described the dietary patterns that reduce the risk of CVD or coronary heart disease ( CHD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2 DM) patients. In the present study, the association between the American Diabetes Association ( ADA)-recommended dietary pattern, AHEI-2010 , and CVD risk factors and the CVD incidence over 52 months in T2 DM patients was evaluated. Methods The ADA score was developed from the ADA dietary recommendations. In this prospective study, the 24-h dietary recall of 124 adult T2 DM patients without nephropathy or chronic kidney disease was collected. The CVD risk factors were collected at baseline and at 6-month follow-up. Results Compared with lower ADA and AHEI-2010 score participants, the higher score participants exhibited a significantly lower waist circumference, serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level and 10-year risk of CHD. Participants with higher ADA dietary scores had a significantly reduced risk of central obesity and systolic blood pressure >140 mmHg. Higher AHEI-2010 scores were significantly related to a reduced risk of serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol > 100 mg dL-1. Seven participants had their first-ever CVD during the follow-up period, although neither ADA score, nor AHEI-2010 score could predict CVD incidence. Conclusions The ADA-recommended dietary pattern and a higher AHEI-2010 score might both exhibit reduced risk factors of CVD in T2 DM patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) is used to noninvasively assess the health of blood vessels and it has been shown to have a similar predictive ability for cardiovascular disease to traditional risk factors. Skin perfusion pressure (SPP) refers to the blood pressure required to restore capillary or microcirculatory flow after controlled occlusion and the return of flow. SPP has been shown to be an important measurement when making clinical decisions for patients with limb ischemia and to be a predictor of the likelihood of wound healing. Peripheral artery disease is common in hemodialysis (HD) patients. However, little is known about the association between FMD or SPP and peripheral artery disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between FMD and SPP with brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) in HD patients in Taiwan, an area with a high rate of ESRD. This study was conducted at a regional hospital in southern Taiwan. ABI and baPWV values were measured using an ABI automated device. FMD and SPP were measured using ultrasound and a microvasculature blood flow monitor, respectively. Eighty patients were enrolled in this study. Compared to the patients with an ABI ≥ 0.95, those with an ABI < 0.95 had lower SPP of the feet (dorsal and plantar portions, both p < 0.001). After multivariable adjustments, low triglycerides (p = 0.033) and high calcium–phosphate product (p = 0.018) were significantly associated with low FMD. Further, low ABI (p = 0.001) and low baPWV (p = 0.036) were significantly associated with low SPP of dorsal portions. Old age (p = 0.005), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p = 0.016), and low ABI (p = 0.002) were significantly associated with low SPP of plantar portions. This study demonstrated an association between FMD and SPP with peripheral artery disease in HD patients. Patients with low ABI and baPWV had a high risk of low SPP of the feet. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is an increasing global health issue. Peripheral artery occlusive disease (PAOD) is a common complication of diabetes, and it is a complex and costly disease. The association between type 2 DM and obesity is well known, however, the relationship between obesity and PAOD in patients with type 2 DM has yet to be elucidated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine associations between obesity-related indices and PAOD in patients with type 2 DM. A total of 1872 outpatients with type 2 DM were recruited from two hospitals in southern Taiwan. An ankle–brachial index (ABI) < 0.9 in either leg was considered to indicate the presence of PAOD. The following obesity-related indices were investigated: conicity index (CI), waist–hip ratio (WHR), body roundness index (BRI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), abdominal volume index, a body shape index (ABSI), visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), body adiposity index, body mass index and triglyceride–glucose index. Overall, 4.1% of the enrolled patients had an ABI < 0.9. High values of the following obesity-related indices were significantly associated with a low ABI: WHtR (p = 0.045), VAI (p = 0.003), CI (p = 0.042), BRI (p = 0.021) and ABSI (p = 0.043). Furthermore, WHR (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.661), CI (AUC = 0.660) and LAP (AUC = 0.642) had the best performance (all p < 0.001) to predict PAOD. In conclusion, high WHtR, BRI, CI, VAI and BAI values were associated with a low ABI in the enrolled patients, and WHR, CI and LAP were the most powerful predictors of PAOD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Developed a drought analysis framework using SPI for parameter determination. • Copula and a Poisson process with long-term nonstationarity were integrated. • Proposed framework is able to applied in forecasting/generating synthetic droughts. • Helpful in issues associated with droughts and its preparedness. Droughts have been occurring with increased frequency and bringing with them considerable losses. Due to its nature, the best approach to monitoring and assessing droughts is in terms of stochastic theories. As a consequence, this study applied SPI in the hydrological drought detection, and examine/interpret drought-related phenomena. The 3-month SPI is used to decide the drought development and terminate phases based on the coincidence of hydrological drought and anomalies in precipitation. Four primary characteristics were determined to clarify the descriptions of drought magnitude and occurrence: duration, deficit, occurrence time and recurrence year. A stochastic process of drought is established to take account these characteristics using the copula function and a Poisson process as well as non-stationarity. Case study on the Shihmen and Zengwen reservoir watersheds in Taiwan revealed that hydrological drought events often coincide with meteorological drought, but some inconsistencies due to unusual hydrological hysteresis in rainfall and runoff. Our analysis raised several issues, including the choice of drought identification parameters and SPI time scale/ threshold, which should take into account anthropogenic activity and hydrological characteristics. A positive correlation between drought duration and drought deficit and a negative correlation between them and occurrence time were identified. It was also observed that subsequent drought event may be more severe due to the partial recovery of hydrological condition. In terms of non-stationarity, our results do not show strong evidence of long-term trend for drought characteristics. Some limitations could be due to the percentile-to-percentile basis of copula. This issue may need to be examined using non-stationary copula analysis or time-variant correlation-covariance models. In the end, we demonstrated that this framework can apply in forecasting drought conditions and generating synthetic droughts for use in the formulation of water resources management strategies and the development of drought preparedness plans. The incidence and prevalence of dialysis in Taiwan are high compared to other regions. Consequently, mitigating chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the worsening of kidney function have emerged as critical healthcare priorities in Taiwan. Heat stress is known to be a significant risk factor for CKD and kidney function impairment. However, differences in the impact of heat stress between males and females remains unexplored. We conducted this retrospective cross-sectional analysis using data from the Taiwan Biobank (TWB), incorporating records of the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) during midday (11 AM-2 PM) and working hours (8 AM-5 PM) periods based on the participants' residential address. Average 1-, 3-, and 5-year WBGT values prior to the survey year were calculated and analyzed using a geospatial artificial intelligence-based ensemble mixed spatial model, covering the period from 2010 to 2020. A total of 114,483 participants from the TWB were included in this study, of whom 35.9% were male and 1053 had impaired kidney function (defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate < 60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 ). Multivariable analysis revealed that in the male participants, during the midday period, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year average WBGT values per 1 ℃ increase were significantly positively associated with eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 (odds ratio [OR], 1.096, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.002-1.199, p = 0.044 for 1 year; OR, 1.093, 95% CI = 1.000-1.196, p = 0.005 for 3 years; OR, 1.094, 95% CI = 1.002-1.195, p = 0.045 for 5 years). However, significant associations were not found for the working hours period. In the female participants, during the midday period, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year average WBGT values per 1 ℃ increase were significantly negatively associated with eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 (OR, 0.872, 95% CI = 0.778-0.976, p = 0.018 for 1 year; OR, 0.874, 95% CI = 0.780-0.978, p = 0.019 for 3 years; OR, 0.875, 95% CI = 0.784-0.977, p = 0.018 for 5 years). In addition, during the working hours period, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year average WBGT values per 1 ℃ increase were also significantly negatively associated with eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 (OR, 0.856, 95% CI = 0.774-0.946, p = 0.002 for 1 year; OR, 0.856, 95% CI = 0.774-0.948, p = 0.003 for 3 years; OR, 0.853, 95% CI = 0.772-0.943, p = 0.002 for 5 years). In conclusion, our results revealed that increased WBGT was associated with impaired kidney function in males, whereas increased WBGT was associated with a protective effect against impaired kidney function in females. Close associations among secondhand smoke (SHS) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components have been demonstrated, however sex differences in these associations remain unclear. We collected 121,364 participants from the Taiwan Biobank, and excluded those with smoking history, the remaining 88,297 participants (male: 18,595; female: 69,702; mean age 50.1 ± 11.0 years) were included. SHS exposure was evaluated based on self-reported questionnaires. SHS was associated with MetS (odds ratio [OR], 1.268, p < 0.001 for males vs. 1.180, p < 0.001 for females), abdominal obesity (OR, 1.234, p < 0.001 for males vs. 1.199, p < 0.001 for females), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (OR, 1.183, p = 0.008 for males vs. 1.094, p = 0.011 for females), hyperglycemia (OR, 1.286, p < 0.001 for males vs. 1.234, p < 0.001 for females), but not with hypertriglyceridemia. SHS was associated with high blood pressure (BP) (OR, 1.278, p < 0.001) only in males, but not in females. Furthermore, significant interactions were found between sex x SHS on MetS ( p = 0.023), abdominal obesity ( p = 0.032), and elevated BP ( p < 0.001). Moreover, the participants who were exposed to SHS for ≥1 hour per week were associated with a higher risk (OR = 1.316, p = 0.001 in males vs. OR = 1.220, p < 0.001 in females) of MetS compared to those with no exposure. These results showed an association between SHS and a high OR for MetS in both the males and females. Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common global health issue. Previous studies have revealed a higher prevalence of GERD in females than in males, however few studies have investigated sex differences in the risk factors associated with GERD. Therefore, the aim of this population-based study was to examine sex differences in the risk factors for GERD in a large cohort of over 120,000 Taiwanese participants., Methods: We enrolled 121,583 participants (male: 43,698; female: 77,885; mean age 49.9 ± 11.0 years) from the Taiwan Biobank. The presence of GERD was ascertained using self-reported questionnaires. Sex differences in the risk factors associated with GERD were examined using multivariable logistic regression analysis., Results: The overall prevalence of GERD was 13.7%, including 13.0% in the male participants and 14.1% in the female participants (p < 0.001). Multivariable analysis showed that older age, hypertension, smoking history, alcohol history, low fasting glucose, and low uric acid were significantly associated with GERD in the male participants. In the female participants, older age, diabetes, hypertension, smoking history, alcohol history, low systolic blood pressure, low fasting glucose, high hemoglobin, high total cholesterol, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low uric acid were significantly associated with GERD. Significant interactions were found between sex and age (p < 0.001), diabetes (p < 0.001), smoking history (p < 0.001), fasting glucose (p = 0.002), triglycerides (p = 0.001), HDL-C (p = 0.001), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (p = 0.002) on GERD., Conclusions: Our results showed a higher prevalence of GERD among females compared to males. Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often have structural abnormalities of the heart due to pressure and volume overload. The aim of this study was to evaluate associations between echocardiographic parameters and renal outcomes (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] slope and progression to dialysis) in patients with stage 3-5 CKD., Methods: This longitudinal study enrolled 419 patients. Changes in renal function were assessed using the eGFR slope. Rapid renal progression was defined as an eGFR slope < -3 mL/min/1.73 m 2 /year, and the renal endpoint was defined as commencing dialysis., Results: Increased left atrial diameter (LAD), ratio of left ventricular mass to body surface area (LVM/BSA), ratio of LVM to height 2.7 (LVM/ht 2.7 ), and ratio of observed to predicted LVM (o/p LVM) were associated with eGFR slope in an adjusted model, but left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was not. Furthermore, LAD ≥ 4.7 cm, LVM/BSA > 115 g/m 2 in males and > 95 g/m 2 in females, and LVM/ht 2.7 > 48 g/ht 2.7 in males and > 44 g/ht 2.7 in females were correlated with progression to dialysis, but o/p LVM and LVEF were not. The maximum change in χ 2 change to predict renal outcomes was observed for LAD, followed by LVM/BSA and LVM/ht 2.7 ., Conclusions: A large LAD and increased LVM, regardless of how it was measured (LVM/BSA, LVM/ht 2.7 and o/p LVM), were correlated with adverse renal outcomes in patients with CKD stage 3-5. LAD had superior prognostic value to LVM and LVEF.

The global pandemic of obesity and the increasing incidence of chronic respiratory diseases are growing health concerns. The association between obesity and pulmonary function is uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to explore associations between changes in lung function and obesity-related indices in a large longitudinal study. A total of 9059 participants with no personal histories of asthma, smoking, bronchitis, or emphysema were enrolled from the Taiwan Biobank and followed for 4 years. Lung function was assessed using spirometry measurements including forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). Changes in FEV1/FVC (∆FEV1/FVC) between baseline and follow-up were calculated. The following obesity-related indices were studied: lipid accumulation product (LAP), body roundness index (BRI), conicity index (CI), body adiposity index (BAI), abdominal volume index (AVI), body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). In multivariable analysis, the subjects with high BMI ( p < 0.001), WHR ( p < 0.001), WHtR ( p < 0.001), LAP ( p = 0.002), BRI ( p < 0.001), CI ( p = 0.005), BAI ( p < 0.001), and AVI ( p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a high baseline FEV1/FVC. After 4 years of follow-up, the subjects with high BMI ( p < 0.001), WHR ( p < 0.001), WHtR ( p < 0.001), LAP ( p = 0.001), BRI ( p < 0.001), CI ( p = 0.002), BAI ( p < 0.001), and AVI ( p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a low △FEV1/FVC. High obesity-related index values were associated with better baseline lung function and a rapid decrease in lung function at follow-up.

Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and obesity-related indices are prognostic factors for adverse outcomes in both subjects with and without diabetes. A few studies have investigated sex differences in obesity indices related to the risk of diabetes, however no studies have compared the relationship between FPG and obesity-related indices by diabetes and sex. Therefore, in this study, we compared the curve shapes of FPG and various obesity-related indices by diabetes, and further explored sex differences in these associations. Data were derived from the Taiwan Biobank database, which included 5000 registered individuals. We used an adjusted generalized linear regression model and calculated the difference of least square means (Lsmean; standard error, SE) for males and females with and without diabetes. Associations between obesity-related indices and fasting glucose level by diabetes and sex groups were estimated, and the ORTHOREG procedure was used to construct B-splines. The post-fitting for linear models procedure was used to determine the range at which the trends separated significantly. The diabetes/sex/FPG interaction term was significant for all obesity-related indices, including body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, lipid accumulation product, body roundness index, conicity index, body adiposity index and abdominal volume index. B-spline comparisons between males and females did not reach significance. However, FPG affected the trend towards obesity-related indices. As the fasting glucose level increased, the values of obesity-related indices varied more obviously in the participants without diabetes than in those with diabetes mellitus. The current study revealed that there was a different relationship between FPG and obesity-related indices by diabetes and sex. FPG affected the trend towards obesity-related indices more obviously in participants without diabetes than in those with diabetes. Further studies with a longitudinal design would provide a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms for the relationships.

Female sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone play an important role in the regulation of a woman's body, including cognition and neurogenesis. However, the effects of age at menarche and reproductive period on cognitive function are still controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between age at menarche and reproductive period with cognitive impairment. Data were obtained from the Taiwan Biobank. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) and its five subdomains. Multivariable linear regression analysis revealed that an old age at menarche (per one year; coefficient β, -0.189; p = 0.020) was significantly associated with a low total MMSE score, whereas reproductive period ( p = 0.733) was not significantly associated with total MMSE score. Furthermore, an old age at menarche was significantly associated with low MMSE G2 (registration) (per one year; coefficient β, -0.022; p = 0.035) and G5 (language, construction and obey) scores (per one year; coefficient β, -0.054; p = 0.047). However, age at menarche was not significantly associated with MMSE G1 (orientation), G3 (attention and calculation) and G4 (recall) scores. In addition, reproductive period was not significantly associated with any MMSE subscores. Late menarche was associated with poor cognitive function, including low total MMSE score and low MMSE G2 and G5 scores. However, reproductive period was not associated with cognitive function in postmenopausal women.

Background: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has been reported to be a simple and reliable surrogate marker of insulin resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between the TyG index and echocardiographic parameters including left ventricular mass (LVM), left atrial diameter (LAD) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and markers of peripheral artery disease, ankle-brachial index (ABI) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Methods: A total of 823 (483 males and 340 females) patients were enrolled from 2007 to 2011 at a regional hospital in southern Taiwan. Multivariable stepwise linear regression analysis was performed to identify the factors related to echocardiographic parameters and peripheral artery disease. Results: The patients were stratified into four groups according to TyG index quartile. Multivariable stepwise linear regression analysis showed that a higher TyG index was associated with elevated observed/predicted LVM ( p = 0.081), increased LAD ( p = 0.004), decreased LVEF ( p = 0.003) and lower ABI ( p = 0.030), but not observed/predicted LVM and baPWV. Conclusions: A high TyG index was significantly associated with high LAD, low LVEF and low ABI. However, the TyG index was not significantly associated with inappropriate LVM or baPWV. Osteoporosis is defined as a systemic skeletal disease characterized by a reduction in bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue. Previous studies have reported associations between air pollution and lower bone mineral density; however, few studies have investigated the association between air pollution and osteoporosis. In this study, we combined two databases, the first including 5000 individuals registered in the Taiwan Biobank, and the second containing detailed daily data on air pollution. After multivariable adjustments, ozone (O 3 ) (unstandardized coefficient β, 0.015; p = 0.008) was significantly positively associated with T-score, whereas carbon monoxide (CO) (unstandardized coefficient β, -0.809; p < 0.001), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) (unstandardized coefficient β, -0.050; p = 0.005), nitric oxide (NO) (unstandardized coefficient β, -0.040; p < 0.001), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) (unstandardized coefficient β, -0.023; p < 0.001), and nitrogen oxide (NO x ) (unstandardized coefficient β, -0.017; p < 0.001) were significantly negatively associated with T-score. The interactions between CO and NO x ( p = 0.001) and SO 2 and NO 2 ( p = 0.004) on T-score were statistically significant. An increase in exposure to CO, NO and NO x was associated with a faster decline in T-score in the female participants compared to the male participants. In addition, an increase in O 3 was associated with a faster increase in T-score in the female participants compared to the male participants. In conclusion, the air pollutants CO, SO 2 , NO, NO 2 , and NO x were associated with osteoporosis. In addition, there were interaction and synergetic effects between CO and NO x and SO 2 and NO 2 on T-score. We also observed differences in the associations between air pollutants and T-score between the female and male participants.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) places a heavy burden on the healthcare system worldwide. The risk factors may vary by body adiposity. We aimed to investigate the associations of socioeconomic, environmental, and behavioral factors with CKD in different groups of body mass indexes (BMI). Methods: A case-control study was conducted in 3280 participants (1048 CKD and 2232 non-CKD) from seven hospitals and nearby communities from May 2012 to August 2015. Personal characteristics, anthropometrics, environmental exposures, and health-related behaviors were assessed using a structured questionnaire. The logistic regression models were utilized for analysis. Results: Older age (odd ratio, OR = 2.85; p < 0.001), being men (OR = 4.23; p < 0.001), smoking (OR = 3.36; p < 0.001), stable income (OR = 0.33; p < 0.001), higher education (OR = 0.37~0.38; p < 0.001), and daily adequate water intake (OR = 0.64; p = 0.010) were associated with CKD in normal weight people. Older age (OR = 2.49; p < 0.001), being men (OR = 3.36; p < 0.001), education (OR = 0.44, p = 0.004), hypertension (OR = 2.93; p <0.001), diabetes (OR = 1.83; p = 0.004), and using traditional Chinese medicine (OR = 2.03, p = 0.014) were associated with CKD in overweight people. Older age (OR = 2.71; p < 0.001), being men (OR = 2.69; p < 0.001), hypertension (OR = 2.93; p < 0.001), diabetes (OR = 1.94; p = 0.001) were associated with CKD in obese people. Conclusions: The associated factors of CKD varied by different groups of BMI. These findings may help to develop potential interventions to manage CKD.

Objective: In this study, a Hemodialysis Eating Index (HDEI) suitable for hemodialysis (HD) patients in Taiwan was developed based on the dietary recommendations of the U.S. National Kidney Foundation for HD patients and the Taiwanese 2011 Daily Food Guide. The HDEI was used to explore HD-associated cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors., Methods: In this prospective study, 108 HD patients from 2 HD centers in Taiwan were recruited as participants in 2010. All participants were older than 20 years. Patient CVD risk factor and 3-day dietary data were collected, and their HDEI scores were calculated. The HDEI scores comprise 12 food-related factors: the consumption of vegetables, fruits, total grains, whole grains, high-protein foods, high biological values, red and white meat, fish, oils, saturated fatty acids or trans fatty acids, nuts, and the duration of multivitamin use. The scores ranged from 5 to 100, and SAS software version 9.3 was used to perform statistical analyses. A P value less than .05 was considered statistically significant., Results: The HDEI scores and serum albumin (Alb) levels were significantly and positively correlated. The participants were divided into 2 groups on the basis of the median HDEI score of 72.2. Two months after HDEI evaluation, the high-HDEI scoring group exhibited significantly decreased levels of serum total cholesterol and increased hemoglobin (Hb) levels., Conclusion: The HDEI can be used to reflect selected nutritional status markers, such as Alb and Hb levels and CVD risk factors, for HD patients. In the present study on five pure phenolic compounds (1-5) isolated from the rhizomes of Zingiber officinale (ginger) and investigated for their antiallergic potency, rat basophilic leukemia (RBL-2H3) cells were incubated with these compounds and the release of beta-hexosaminidase was measured kinetically. The data obtained suggest that ginger rhizomes harbor potent compounds capable of inhibiting allergic reactions and may be useful for the treatment and prevention of allergic diseases.
