We examined employees' unethical pro-organizational behaviors (UPBs) during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objectives were to determine the effects of job demands on UPBs and emotional exhaustion. We conducted a survey in three rounds with a sample of 339 employees in the financial industry in Taiwan, who were selected because they were in positions where they were unable to work from home during the pandemic. The results revealed that job demands and emotional exhaustion were associated with UPBs. This study sheds light on the challenges faced by frontline workers with specialized knowledge who were unable to work remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, and expands understanding of the antecedents of UPBs. Background: Employees are considered as one of the most important assets in many organizations, and their health well-being is critical to help achieve a sustainable and motivated workforce that is committed to delivering quality hospitality services through enhanced performance and productivity. Given the extent of the challenges and impact presented by the COVID-19 pandemic to the hospitality industry, it is timely to gain further insights on employees' health well-being. The key purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between health-related quality of life, achievement motivation and job performance in the Taiwan hospitality industry, to acquire a better understanding of their relationships through the job performance pathway models. Methods: This study has used a purposeful sampling technique to select the 10 highest-earning hospitality companies in Taiwan. A total of 292 questionnaires were collected from the employees of these hospitality companies. Based on the multi-dimensional concept of health-related quality of life (HRQoL), the relationships between the five key dimensions (i.e. psychological health, physical health, social health, achievement motivation, and job performance) were examined. To measure these dimensions, the survey questions were adapted from previous research such as the World Health Organization's WHOQOL-BREF scale, Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire. Partial least squares - Structural Equation Modeling method was used to explore these dimensions, and two job performance pathway models (for manager and staff) were subsequently developed. Results and conclusions: Findings showed that psychological health directly affected the manager's job performance and physical health had a similar effect through social health. While psychological health had not affected the staff's job performance, but it could affect achievement motivation through both direct and indirect effects of social health. The pathway models that were developed indicated that the manager's job performance was mainly affected by psychological health and social health, whereas the key dimension that had affected the staff's job performance was achievement motivation. A rapidly growing literature examines the impacts of COVID‐19 on consumer spending and business operations. However, little is yet known about its effects on the food industry. We contribute to this topic by quantifying the effects of COVID‐19 on the Taiwanese food industry, including food manufacturing, wholesale, retail and service sectors. Using administrative data on the business transactions of food industry firms in Taiwan with a difference‐in‐differences model, we find that COVID‐19 reduced the total sales value of the food industry by 24%. However, the negative effects are unequally distributed among different sectors of the food industry. The negative effect is more pronounced in the food manufacturing sector. We also find a substantial impact in urban areas, high‐income areas and areas with a larger proportion of elderly population. Compared to most of the countries that implemented mandatory lockdowns to cope with COVID‐19, Taiwan maintained good control over the pandemic in 2020. The mobility of Taiwanese residents is much higher than those of other countries with severe infection rates. We explored the influence of hospitality employees' workplace spirituality on person–organization (P–O) fit and workplace deviance, and P–O fit as a mediator of the link between workplace spirituality and workplace deviance. Data were collected from 275 employees across 20 tourist hotels in Taiwan. To avoid common method variance, participants completed the survey at two time points. They first responded to items related to workplace spirituality, then 4 weeks later, they responded to the workplace deviance and P–O fit measures. Results show that workplace spirituality negatively affected interpersonal and organizational workplace deviance, and P–O fit mediated the relationship between workplace spirituality and interpersonal deviance. However, the mediating effect of P–O fit in the link between workplace spirituality and organizational deviance was not significant. These results provide a reference for practice and researchers. The increasing elderly population puts significant health, economic, and social burdens on society. Physical activity is one of the most cost-effective ways to maintain the health of the elderly. This study adopts a treatment effects model to investigate the causal relationship between environment attributes and physical activity among the elderly, while taking endogeneity into account. The data were collected from 274 participants by face-to-face interviews in Taichung, Taiwan. Performing physical activity regularly in parks is the most important measure of the amount of physical activity by the elderly. Providing sufficient and accessible parks in metropolitan residential neighborhoods could be one of the most cost-effective ways to promote physical activity for the elderly living in midsize Asian cities. Abstract: Groundwater flow and the associated surface water flow are potential negative factors on underground tunnels. Early detection of environmental impacts on water resources is of significant importance to planning, design and construction of tunnel projects, as early detection can minimize accidents and project delays during construction. The groundwater modeling software package Groundwater Modeling System (GMS), which supports the groundwater numerical codes MODFLOW and FEMWATER, was utilized to determine the impact of tunneling excavation on the hydrogeological environment in a regional area around the tunnel and a local hot springs area, at the “Tseng-Wen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion Project”, in Taiwan. A hydrogeological conceptual model was first developed to simplify structures related to the site topography, geology and geological structure. The MODFLOW code was then applied to simulate groundwater flow pattern for the hydrogeological conceptual model in the tunnel area. The automated parameter estimation method was applied to calibrate groundwater level fluctuation and hydrogeological parameters in the region. Calibration of the model demonstrated that errors between simulated and monitored results are smaller than allowable errors. The study also observed that tunneling excavation caused groundwater to flow toward the tunnel. No obvious changes in the groundwater flow field due to tunnel construction were observed far away in the surrounding regions. Furthermore, the FEMWATER code for solving 3-D groundwater flow problems, in which hydrogeological characteristics are integrated into a geographic information system (GIS), is applied to evaluate the impact of tunnel construction on an adjacent hot spring. Simulation results indicated that the groundwater drawdown rate is less than the groundwater recharge rate, and the change to the groundwater table after tunnel construction was insignificant for the hot spring area. Finally, the groundwater flow obtained via the GMS indicated that the hydrogeological conceptual model can estimate the possible quantity of tunnel inflow and the impact of tunnel construction on the regional and local groundwater resources regime of the transbasin diversion project. Abstract: Background: According to Hochschild''s (1983. The Managed Heart. Berkeley: University of California Press) classification of emotional labour, nursing staff express high emotional labour. This paper investigates how nursing staff influence job satisfaction and organizational commitment when they perform emotional labour. Objectives: This paper examines the relationship between emotional labour, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment from the perspective of nursing staff. Design: A questionnaire survey was carried out to explore these interrelationships. Setting: Teaching hospital in Taiwan. Participants: Questionnaires were distributed to 500 nursing staff; 295 valid questionnaires were collected and analysed—a 59% response rate. Methods: The questionnaires contained items on emotional labour, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment as well as some basic socio-demographics. In addition, descriptive statistics, correlation and linear structure relation (LISREL) were computed. Results: Emotional display rule (EDR) was significantly and negatively related to job satisfaction. Surface acting (SA) was not significantly related to job satisfaction but demonstrated a significantly negative relationship with organizational commitment. Deep acting (DA) significantly and positively correlated with job satisfaction but demonstrated no significance with organizational commitment. The variety of emotions required (VER) was not significantly related to job satisfaction; frequency and duration of interaction (FDI) and negatively related to job satisfaction; and job satisfaction significantly and positively correlated with organizational commitment. Conclusions: We found that some dimensions of emotional labour significantly relate to job satisfaction. Job satisfaction positively affects organizational commitment and has an intervening effect on DA and organizational commitment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) deficiency leads to phenylalanine accumulation and results in phenylketonuria (PKU). Phenylketonuria can contribute to severe inability such as mental impairment. Early diagnosis and dietary intervention can have beneficial effects on maintaining normal neural and cognitive function in patients with PKU. However, a long-term low phenylalanine diet may put children at risk of malnutrition. A food supplement was therefore used for children with PKU under dietician supervision according to dietary reference intakes (DRIs). In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled patients with PKU and age-matched controls to compare their anthropometry data [weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)], and correlated it with their dietary intake based on 24-h dietary recall. For continuous parameters, the data were expressed as median ± standard deviation (SD), and the Mann–Whitney U test was used to test the difference among the groups. Correlation by natural proteins, body fat, and fat-free mass were evaluated using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Twenty-two participants diagnosed with PKU (ages 8–27 years; mean 15.23 ± 5.23) and a control group of 22 non-PKU participants (ages 8–39 years; mean 19.73 ± 10.6) were recruited for this study. Between the two groups of participants, no significant difference was found in height, weight, BMI, muscle mass, or fat mass. The percentage of natural protein has no effect on body composition. We found a significant positive correlation between the total protein intake percentage of DRIs and muscle mass (r = 0.491, p = 0.020) and a significant negative correlation in the total protein intake percentage of DRIs and fat mass (r = -0.475, p = 0.025) in participants with PKU. There were no significant differences in body composition and nutrition intake between patients with PKU (under metabolic control) and healthy subjects. Thus, giving proper nutrition treatment may have beneficial effects on body growth and nutrition status in patients with PKU in Taiwan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Evidence-based studies propose that the aspirate pH test may be easily and reliably conducted to verify the proper placement of nasogastric tubes (NGTs). Nurses rarely implement this procedure because of the lack of related knowledge. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of implementing a revised standard care procedure to enhance nurses' ability to verify placement of the NGT. Methods: his study used a quasi-experimental, longitudinal research design. Nurses from two intensive care units were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n = 35) and the control group (n = 31). A revised standard-of-care procedure to confirm the proper placement of an NGT was incorporated into a slideshow presentation, a printed leaflet, and an audit checklist. The experimental group received continuous education and individual teaching on the revised standard-of-care procedure, whereas the control group did not receive additional education and continued to provide conventional care. The study gathered data using scales designed to address knowledge of and attitudes toward verification of NGT placement and the checklist for auditing the NGT care procedure. Scales were implemented before and after the practice program was conducted, in Months 1, 2, and 3, to evaluate the feasibility of the developed improvement measures. Results: This study found significant improvements in the experimental group in terms of knowledge regarding NGT placement verification and the NGT care auditing procedure. The positive improvement of the intervention on the NGT care auditing procedure remained for at least 3 months after the end of the intervention. Conclusions: The findings suggest that using an aspirate pH test is a feasible approach to verify NGT placement in critical care units, a crucial aspect of care necessary to promote patient safety and quality of care. Abstract: In physics, a spectrum is, the series of colored bands diffracted and arranged in the order of their respective wave lengths by the passage of white light through a prism or other diffracting medium. Outside of physics, a spectrum is a condition that is not limited to a specific set of values but can vary infinitely within a continuum. In commerce, an effective visualization tool, especially for stakeholders or managers, is a brand spectrum diagram highlighting where the company’s brands and products are situated compared to other competitors. This paper investigates the research issues on product and brand spectrum in the beverage product market of Taiwan, which proposes using the Apriori algorithm of association rules, and clustering analysis based on an ontology-based data mining approach, for mining customer and product knowledge from the database. Knowledge extracted from data-mining results is illustrated as knowledge patterns, rules, and maps in order to propose suggestions and solutions to beverage firms for possible product development, promotion, and marketing. Recent studies demonstrate that air quality improved during the coronavirus pandemic due to the imposition of social lockdowns. We investigate the impact of COVID-19 on air pollution in the two largest cities in Taiwan, which were not subject to economic or mobility restrictions. Using a difference-in-differences approach and real-time data on air quality and transportation, we estimate that anthropogenic air pollution from local sources increased during working days and decreased during non-working days during the COVID-19 pandemic. This led to a 3–7 percent increase in CO, O 3 , SO 2 , PM 10 and PM 2.5. We demonstrate that the increase in air pollution resulted from a shift in preferred mode of travel away from public transportation and towards personal motor vehicles during working days. In particular, metro and shared bicycle usage decreased between 8 and 18 percent, on average, while automobile and scooter use increased between 11 and 21 percent during working days. Similar COVID-19 prevention behaviors in regions or countries emerging from lockdowns could likewise result in an increase in air pollution. Taking action to reduce the transmissibility of COVID-19 on metro cars, trains and buses could help policymakers limit the substitution of personal motor vehicles for public transit, and mitigate increases in air pollution when lifting mobility restrictions. • Anthropogenic emissions in Taipei and New Taipei City worsened during COVID-19. • The increase in air pollution only occurred during working days. • Substitution of motor vehicles for public transportation drove the increase. • COVID-19 prevention behaviors could increase air pollution as lockdowns are lifted. This paper provides the first evidence of the causal effect of COVID-19 on metro use using real-time data from the Taipei Metro System in Taiwan. In contrast to other cities or countries, Taiwan did not enforce strict social lockdowns or mandatory stay-at-home orders to combat COVID-19. The major prevention strategies to the pandemic in Taiwan include promoting social distancing, mandating the wearing of face masks in public areas, and requiring all international arrivals to quarantine for 14 days. Using administrative data on confirmed cases of COVID-19 and ridership from metro stations with the difference-in-differences model, we find that an additional new confirmed case of COVID-19 reduces metro use by 1.43% after controlling for local socio-demographic variables associated with ridership and the number of international arrivals to Taiwan. This result implies that the reduction in metro trips is attributable to decreases in residents' use of public transportation due to perceived health risks. Furthermore, the effect of COVID-19 on metro use disproportionally impacts stations with different characteristics. The effect is more pronounced for metro stations connected to night markets, shopping centers, or colleges. Although decreases in metro ridership lower the revenue of the Taipei Metro System, our results indicate a tradeoff between increased financial burdens of public transportation systems and reducing medical expenses associated with COVID-19. Objectives Telecare has not only brought down medical expenses, but has also become an important tool to address healthcare needs. In recent years, the Taiwanese government has been concerned about this healthcare issue. However, only a few hospitals provide telecare. This study aims at investigating the barriers that healthcare providers face while implementing home telecare in Taiwan. Methods A qualitative research design was employed in this study, with semi-structured in-depth interviews. The sample was obtained from five hospitals, including three medical centers and two regional hospitals. A total of 31 healthcare providers were interviewed, including case managers ( n = 11), administrators ( n = 7), physicians ( n = 7), and nurses ( n = 6). Results The results were summarized into five themes, including: (1) unsuitable laws and vague policies, (2) the policy implementation fails to meet public needs, (3) lack of organizational support, (4) lack of quality and convenience of the system, and (5) inadequate public perception and attitudes. Conclusions Obstacles in policy and regulations are the most fundamental difficulties for telecare implementation, therefore the government should provide a clear direction by planning policies, legislate appropriate regulations, and incorporate telecare into the scope of medical insurance, in order to improve the environment and stimulate the telecare service market. In order to improve the success rate of telecare, administrators should be able to identify an appropriate cost-benefit model to build a humane system to satisfy public needs and to provide staff with resources and support. The role of statins in improving cardiovascular outcomes is well established, but little is known about their impacts on long-term outcomes in persistent tobacco users with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) who receive percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A population of persistent smokers with CAD treated by PCI was analyzed. From 2012 through 2019, a cohort of 907 persistent tobacco users with stable CAD undergoing PCI were enrolled from the inpatient department of Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, Taiwan. We surveyed statin users and non-statin users after index PCI, and general characteristics, major risk factors, angiographic findings, and long-term clinical outcome were compared. Kaplan-Meier curve was used to compare the survival difference and Cox proportional hazard model was used to analyze the predictors for all-cause mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events, including cardiovascular (CV) mortality, myocardial infarction, and repeated PCI procedures. The statin group had a higher average total cholesterol (P < .01) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level (P < .01) and was younger (P < .01) than the non-statin group. Ninety-six point one percent patients in the statin group had a LDL-C level below 100 mg/dL after treatment. They also had a more frequent history of acute coronary syndrome and lower prevalence of chronic kidney disease than the non-statin group (both P < .01). Freedom from all-cause and CV mortality were lower in the non-statin group than the statin group (both P < .01). After adjustment for age and chronic kidney disease, statin treatment no longer reduced the risk of CV mortality (hazard ratio: 0.32, 95% confidence interval = 0.07-1.49), but was still associated with a reduction in all-cause mortality (hazard ratio: 0.27, 95% confidence interval = 0.10-0.75). In persistent tobacco users undergoing PCI, patients treated with statin for LDL-C values above 100 mg/dL had a similar level of cardiovascular protection as those with LDL-C below 100 mg/dL and without statin treatment. Therefore, smoking attenuates pleiotropic effect of statin. Background: Hereditary neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) are a group of rare disorders, and the diagnosis of these diseases is a substantial burden for referral centers. Although next-generation sequencing (NGS) has identified a large number of genes associated with hereditary NMDs, the diagnostic rates still vary across centers., Methods: Patients with a suspected hereditary NMD were referred to neuromuscular specialists at the National Taiwan University Hospital. Molecular diagnoses were performed by employing a capture panel containing 194 genes associated with NMDs., Results: Among the 50 patients referred, 43 had a suspicion of myopathy, and seven had polyneuropathy. The overall diagnostic rate was 58%. Pathogenic variants in 19 genes were observed; the most frequent pathogenic variant found in this cohort (DYSF) was observed in only four patients, and 10 pathogenic variants were observed in one patient each. One case of motor neuron disease was clinically mistaken for myopathy. A positive family history increased the diagnostic rate (positive: 72.7% vs. negative: 56.3%). Fourteen patients with elevated plasma creatine kinase levels remained without a diagnosis., Conclusion: The application of NGS in this single-center study proves the great diversity of hereditary NMDs. A retrospective analysis of the improvement in the health condition of patients undergoing hemodialysis was done to understand the important factors that can affect malnutrition in these patients. In this study, data from patients who underwent hemodialysis between 2010 and 2015 in a regional hospital in Yunlin County were collected from the Taiwan Society of Nephrology-Kidney Transplantation database. A total of 1049 medical records from 300 patients with age over 20 and underwent hemodialysis were collected for this study. A decision tree C5.0 and logistic regression were used to identify 40 independent variables, as well as the association of the dependent variable albumin. Then, the C5.0 decision tree, logistic regression, and support vector machine (SVM) methods were applied to find a combination of factors that contributed to malnutrition in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Predictive models were established. Finally, a receiver operating characteristic curve and confusion matrix was used to evaluate the standard of performance of these models. All analytical methods indicated that "age" was an important factor. In particular, the best predictive model was the SVM-model 4, with a training accuracy rate of 98.95% and test accuracy rate of 66.89%, identified that "age" and 15 other important factors were the most related to hemodialysis. The findings of this study can be used as a reference for clinical applications.

Galactomannan with an octasaccharide-repeating unit (ACP) was isolated from Taiwan medicinal mushroom Antrodia cinnamomea, and its chemical structure was determined herein. ACP significantly enhanced the phagocytosis and bactericidal activity of J774A.1 murine macrophages against Escherichia coli, with prospects for developing a new immunomodulatory compound or adjuvant in immunotherapy and vaccination.

Concerns of Acinetobacter baumannii infection have increased due to the emergence of multi-drug resistance. In the present study, we determined the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) structure of A. baumannii SK44, a clinical isolate from Taiwan, to consist of pentasaccharide repeats. We found that CPS-induced antibody provided 55% protection against challenge in an animal model. The CPS-specific antibody reacted with the surface components of about 62% clinical isolates (342/554 strains) from cross-sectional and longitudinal studies by dot-immunoassay. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of positive strains showed the antibody covered different clonalites of A. baumannii clinical isolates. Meanwhile, using the CPS antibody as a probe, we found a number of outer membrane proteins bound to the antibody, including OmpA/motB, TonB-dependent receptor, and Omp38, indicating their association with CPS. Background: Patients with renal failure are vulnerable to tuberculosis, a common worldwide infectious disease. In the growing dialysis population, the risk for tuberculosis among the associated sub-groups is important but unclear. This study investigated latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in patients with severe chronic kidney disease (CKD) and among dialysis-unit staff caring for patients on dialysis., Methods: From January 2012 to June 2013, patients undergoing dialysis, those with severe CKD (estimated glomerular filtration rate <30 ml/min/1.73 m2), and the dialysis-unit staff (nursing staff and doctors in hemodialysis units) in several Taiwan hospitals were prospectively enrolled. Interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) through QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-tube was used to determine LTBI. Predictors for LTBI were analyzed., Results: Of the 599 participants enrolled, 106 (25%) in the dialysis group were IGRA positive. This was higher than the seven (11%) among severe CKD patients and 12 (11%) in the dialysis-unit staff. Independent predictors of LTBI in patient with renal dysfunction were old age (odds ratio [OR]: 1.03 [1.01-1.04] per year increment), prior TB lesion on chest radiograph (OR: 2.90 [1.45-5.83]), serum albumin (OR: 2.59 [1.63-4.11] per 1 g/dl increment), and need for dialysis (OR: 2.47, [1.02-5.95]). The QFT-GIT response was similar among the three groups. Malignancy (OR: 4.91 [1.84-13.10]) and low serum albumin level (OR: 0.22 [0.10-0.51], per 1 g/dl decrease) were associated with indeterminate IGRA results., Conclusions: More patients on dialysis have LTBI compared to those with severe CKD and the dialysis-unit staff. Old age, prior radiographic TB lesion, high serum albumin, and need for dialysis are predictors of LTBI in patients with renal failure. Patients with severe CKD are a lower priority for LTBI screening. The hemodialysis environment is not a risk for LTBI and dialysis-unit staff may be treated as general healthcare workers.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for 5.8% of all malignancies in Taiwan and the incidence of OSCC is on the rise. OSCC is also a common malignancy worldwide and the five-year survival rate remains poor. Therefore, new and effective treatments are needed to control OSCC. In the present study we have investigated the efficacy and associated mechanisms of polyenylpyrroles and their analogs in both in vitro cell culture and in vivo nude mice xenografts. Auxarconjugatin B (compound 1a) resulted in cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase and caspase-dependent apoptosis in OEC-M1 and HSC-3 cells by activating DNA damage and mitochondria dysfunction through the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, release of cytochrome c, increase in B-cell lymphoma-2-associated X protein level, and decrease in B-cell lymphoma-2 level. Compound 1a-induced generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species through cytochrome P450 1A1 was identified as a major mechanism of its effect for DNA damage, mitochondria dysfunction and apoptosis, which was reversed by antioxidant N-acetylcysteine as well as cytochrome P450 1A1 inhibitor and specific siRNA. Furthermore, compound 1a-treated nude mice showed a reduction in the OEC-M1 xenograft tumor growth and an increase in the caspase-3 activation in xenograft tissue. These results provide promising insights as to how compound 1a mediates cytotoxicity and may prove to be a molecular rationale for its translation into a potential therapeutic against OSCC.

Background: Tuberculosis is a common infectious disease in long-term dialysis patients. The prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in this population is unclear, particularly in those receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD). This study investigated the prevalence of LTBI in patients receiving either hemodialysis (HD) or PD to determine predictors of LTBI and indeterminate results of interferon-gamma release assay., Methods: Patients receiving long-term (≥ 3 months) HD or PD from March 2011 to February 2012 in two medical centers were prospectively enrolled. QuantiFERON-Gold in tube (QFT) test was used to determine the status of LTBI after excluding active tuberculosis. The LTBI prevalence was determined in patients receiving different dialysis modes to obtain predictors of LTBI and QFT-indeterminate results., Results: Of 427 patients enrolled (124 PD and 303 HD), 91 (21.3%) were QFT-positive, 316 (74.0%) QFT-negative, and 20 (4.7%) QFT-indeterminate. The prevalence of LTBI was similar in the PD and HD groups. Independent predictors of LTBI were old age (OR: 1.034 [1.013-1.056] per year increment), TB history (OR: 6.467 [1.985-21.066]), and current smoker (OR: 2.675 [1.061-6.747]). Factors associated with indeterminate QFT results were HD (OR: 10.535 [1.336-83.093]), dialysis duration (OR: 1.113 [1.015-1.221] per year increment), anemia (OR: 8.760 [1.014-75.651]), and serum albumin level (OR: 0.244 [0.086-0.693] per 1 g/dL increment)., Conclusion: More than one-fifth of dialysis patients have LTBI. The LTBI prevalence is similar in PD and HD patients but is higher in the elderly, current smokers, and those with prior TB history. Such patients require closer follow-up. Repeated or alternative test may be required for malnutrition patients who received long length of HD.

The present study investigated the chemical composition of Isochrysis galbana Parke, a marine microalga which is widely used as a feedstock in aquaculture. From gas chromatography/mass spectrometric analysis the mono-sugar compositions of I. galbana were 2.1% fucose, 2.5% rhamnose, 2.7% arabinose, 8.5% xylose, 15.7% mannose, 32.7% galactose and 35.8% glucose. The polysaccharides of I. galbana were able to induce prointerleukin-1beta (pro-IL-1beta) protein expression within murine macrophages. Furthermore, five kinds of chlorophyll and one sterol were separated from the ethanolic extracts, including pheophorbide-a, ethyl pheophorbide-a, 10S-10-hydroxypheophytin-a, 10R-10-hydroxypheophytin-a, (132-R)-pheophytin-a, and brassicasterol. In addition, the major soluble components of the ethanol/n-hexane extract were 9-octadecenoic acid (E) (38.4%), hexadecanoic acid (23.3%), tetradecanoic acid (15.7%), and octadecanoic acid (7.2%), but only a few polyunsaturated fatty acids were found, such as 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid (1.9%), 9,12-octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z) (3.4%), and docosahexaenoic acid (0.2%). This is the first occasion that polysaccharides from I. galbana have been demonstrated to exert immunomodulatory properties by the induction of IL-1 within macrophages.

Two common drinking water earthy/musty odorants, 2-methyl-isoborneol (2-MIB) and trans-1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalol (geosmin), were monitored and analyzed for their correlation with environmental conditions in Feng-Shen Reservoir (FSR), Taiwan. Long-term monitoring results, from December 2000 to July 2003, indicated that 2-MIB was present in the reservoir at concentrations between 10 and 200 ng L(-1), and those of geosmin were always smaller than 10 ng L(-1). The 2-MIB concentrations followed a trend of higher concentrations during the warm seasons. After being analyzed with 10 water quality and three meteorological parameters, 2-MIB concentration was found to correlate with corresponding air and water temperatures. An analysis of air temperature history versus 2-MIB concentration in FSR suggested that 2-MIB concentration was best correlated with the mean of average daily temperature from 1 to 9 days before sampling, with R (2) = 0.90. This correlation was further employed to predict the 2-MIB concentration observed during another sampling period in FSR. A similar degree of fit was observed between predictions and experimental data, suggesting the potential applicability of the approach. In addition to the effect of temperature, heavy rainfalls that occurred before the sampling time may also reduce the 2-MIB concentration in the reservoir. A short-term continuous monitoring of the odorants for 32 h showed that both geosmin and 2-MIB concentrations in the reservoir remained almost constant, with only about a 10% difference during the sampling period. This may suggest that the odorants were uniformly distributed in the water near the sampling location in the reservoir.
