The article presents a study that documented Plasmodium falciparum malaria infection and disease in Tanzanian children from birth for an average of two years and for as long as four years. The study reveals the insufficiency of a high parasite burden to cause severe malaria even in children who later were susceptible and the failure of naturally acquired resistance to severe malaria to be explained by improved control of parasite density.
