This paper will focus on the past, present and future of the Community Housing sector in Tasmania. The community housing sector has grown dramatically since the 1990s. At that time there were ten cooperatives and talk of developing three independent community housing associations, one in each region.1 Red Shield Housing (now known as Salvation Army Housing), the first community housing provider in Tasmania, was established in Hobart in 1998. It experienced growing pains due in part to a lack of experience, resources, policies and procedures. However, this was nothing that an experienced community housing manager could not fix.
