Abstract

The article presents the authors' views on the evolution of maize during the pre-historic period in Tehuacan Valley, Mexico. According to the morphological analysis of the early archaeological maize from San Marcos, Mexico, humans were completely dependent on maize for survival. Several factors are responsible for evolutionary rates of change in maize morphology. Information has been provided on the changing significance of maize in Meso-American diet.
