The article presents a study which explores the perceptions of undergraduate students concerning chemistry as their course in college. The study was undertaken following the decline of students pursuing chemistry as their course and often ended up graduating with a degree outside science. In Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, the Department of Chemistry has showed concern on the low retention rate among Hispanic students. The department cited that the students poor performance and low confidence is one of the contributing factors to drop out. Meanwhile, the univesity offers supplemental instruction in undergraduate chemistry classes to encourage students to pursue their course.
