Rice production in the Central Plains of Thailand plays a key role in the country's food security. However, the overuse of inputs coupled with the rising production costs are making it increasingly difficult for smallholder rice farming to remain economically and environmentally sustainable. Replicated production-scale field trials of Cost Reduction Operating Principles (CROP)—Thailand's national package of best management practices for rice production—were established in tandem with laser land leveling (LLL), mechanical drum seeder, and the application of two biofertilizer products (i.e., PGPR II, that contains Azospirillum brasilense Sp. TS29 and Burkholderia vietnamiensis S45; and LDD #12, that contains Azotobacter tropicalis, Burkholderia unamae and Bacillus subtilis) and compared with farmer's practices (FP). Performance indicators (PI) promoted by the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) were used to assess economic and environmental indicators. CROP + PGPR had significantly higher net income (79%) and nitrogen-use efficiency (57%) compared with FP. Pesticide use (28%), seed (60%), inorganic fertilizer N (41%) and total production costs (19%) were reduced in all CROP treatments compared with FP. These results demonstrate that the application of CROP, LLL, mechanical drum seeder, and biofertilizers can substantially improve the economic and environmental sustainability of rice production in the Central Plains of Thailand. Infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus (ISKNV) is a fish-pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Megalocytivirus of the family Iridoviridae. In 2018, disease occurrences (40-50% cumulative mortality) associated with ISKNV infection were reported in grown-out Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) cultured in an inland freshwater system in Thailand. Clinical samples were collected from seven distinct farms located in the eastern and central regions of Thailand. The moribund fish showed various abnormal signs, including lethargy, pale gills, darkened body, and skin hemorrhage, while hypertrophied basophilic cells were observed microscopically in gill, liver, and kidney tissue. ISKNV infection was confirmed on six out of seven farms using virus-specific semi-nested PCR. The MCP and ATPase genes showed 100% sequence identity among the virus isolates, and the virus was found to belong to the ISKNV genotype I clade. Koch's postulates were later confirmed by challenge assay, and the mortality of the experimentally infected fish at 21 days post-challenge was 50-90%, depending on the challenge dose. The complete genome of two ISKNV isolates, namely KU1 and KU2, was recovered directly from the infected specimens using a shotgun metagenomics approach. The genome length of ISKNV KU1 and KU2 was 111,487 and 111,610 bp, respectively. In comparison to closely related ISKNV strains, KU1 and KU2 contained nine unique genes, including a caspase-recruitment-domain-containing protein that is potentially involved in inhibition of apoptosis. Collectively, this study indicated that inland cultured Asian sea bass are infected by homologous ISKNV strains. Aeromonas veronii outbreaks in tilapia farming caused relatively high mortalities, and the bacteria was resistant to many kinds of antimicrobials used in Thailand aquaculture. According to the CLSI standard, the determination of antimicrobials efficacy has been limited to phenotypic analyses, and a genomics study is required. This research aimed to analyze the resistome of A. veronii isolated from diseased tilapia in Chainat, Nong Khai, and Uttaradit provinces in Thailand. A total of 12 isolates of A. veronii were identified based on the gyrB sequencing and then, the MIC values to eight antimicrobials (AMP, AML, GEN, ENR, OXO, OTC, SXT, and FFC) were determined. According to the MIC patterns, whole genome sequencing (WGS) of five representatives and resistome analysis were performed, including 15 genomes of A. veronii isolated from freshwater fish available in the NCBI. All tilapia isolates were susceptible to FFC but resistant to AML and AMP while OTC resistance was the most dominant. In addition to the WGS analysis, 4.5 Mbp of A. veronii was characterized. A total of 20 ARGs were detected by resistome analysis and 16 genes were shared among the A. veronii population. In conclusion, A. veronii strains isolated from tilapia exhibited a resistance to several antimicrobials and multidrug resistance (MDR) which was related to the presence of multiple ARGs. Aeromonas veronii shared the ARGs in their population worldwide with a possibility of a plasmid-mediated acquisition due to the presence of resistance islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The production of banana—one of the highly consumed fruits—is highly affected due to loss of certain number of banana plants in an early phase of vegetation. This affects the ability of farmers to forecast and estimate the production of banana. In this paper, we propose a deep learning (DL) based method to precisely detect and count banana plants on a farm exclusive of other plants, using high resolution RGB aerial images collected from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). An attempt to detect the plants on the normal RGB images resulted less than 78.8% recall for our sample images of a commercial banana farm in Thailand. To improve this result, we use three image processing methods—Linear Contrast Stretch, Synthetic Color Transform and Triangular Greenness Index—to enhance the vegetative properties of orthomosaic, generating multiple variants of orthomosaic. Then we separately train a parameter-optimized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) on manually interpreted banana plant samples seen on each image variants, to produce multiple results of detection on our region of interest. 96.4%, 85.1% and 75.8% of plants were correctly detected on three of our dataset collected from multiple altitude of 40, 50 and 60 meters, of same farm. Further discussion on results obtained from combination of multiple altitude variants are also discussed later in the research, in an attempt to find better altitude combination for data collection from UAV for the detection of banana plants. The results showed that merging the detection results of 40 and 50 meter dataset could detect the plants missed by each other, increasing recall upto 99%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a result of the experimental infection of rats with metacercariae of Paragonimus heterotremus Chen et Hsia, 1964 from crabs (Potamiscus tannanti) caught in Yen Bai province, Vietnam, it was found that worms migrated into the lungs, to the liver and less frequently to the tissue that lines body cavities of the hosts, where they reached the adult stage, but in the muscles, worms stayed at the larval stage. Studies have shown that for P. heterotremus, rats can simultaneously play the role of the final and paratenic host; herewith, an infection with the trematode of this species can lead to the development of three forms of paragonimiasis: pulmonary, hepatic and muscular. Eggs from the adult worms localised in the liver, unlike eggs from the adult worms localised in the lungs, were not excreted into the external environment, but accumulated inside the organ. Histology and description of changes, which take place on the external surface of organs affected with P. heterotremus, are given in this study. Based on the behavioural characteristics of worms during rat infection and molecular genetic data, we established that worms from Vietnam and India should be assigned to different species of Paragonimus. P. heterotremus distribution is limited to the territory of the Southeast China, Northern Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.

Background: Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok are highly dengue endemic. The extent to which disease patterns are attributable to local versus regional dynamics remains unclear. To address this gap we compared key transmission parameters across the locations., Methods and Principal Findings: We used 2003-2009 age-stratified case data to inform catalytic transmission models. Further, we compared the spatial clustering of serotypes within each city. We found that annual case numbers were highly consistent across the two cities (correlation of 0.77, 95% CI: 0.74-0.79) as was the annual force of infection (correlation of 0.57, 95% CI: 0.46-0.68). Serotypes were less similar with serotype-specific correlations ranging from 0.65 for DENV1 to -0.14 for DENV4. Significant spatial clustering of serotypes was observed in HCMC at distances <500m, similar to previous observations from Bangkok., Discussions: Dengue dynamics are comparable across these two hubs.
