A novel bacterium, designated as strain LOR1-02 T and isolated from a lichen sample collected from Kham Riang Subdistrict, Kantharawichai District, Maha Sarakham Province, Thailand, underwent thorough investigation utilizing a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Strain LOR1-02 T demonstrated growth within a temperature range of 20-42 °C (optimal at 30 °C), pH range of 5.0-7.5 (optimal at pH 7.0), and tolerance to 4.0% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis revealed its close relation to Paracraurococcus ruber JCM 9931 T , with a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 97.16%, placing it within the genus Paracraurococcus. The approximate genome size of strain LOR1-02 T was determined to be 8.6 Mb, with a G + C content of 70.9 mol%. Additionally, ANIb, ANIm, and AAI values between the whole genomes of strain LOR1-02 T and type strains were calculated as 82.6-83.4%, 86.1-86.8%, and 81.4-82.2%, respectively, while the dDDH value was determined to be 26.3-28.5% (C.I. 24.0-31.0%). The predominant fatty acids detected were C 18:1 ω7c and/or C 18:1 ω6c, C 16:0 , and C 18:1 2OH. The major ubiquinone identified was Q-10, and the polar lipids included phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, diphosphatidylglycerol, along with unidentified phosphoaminolipid, lipids, and an amino lipid. Based on comprehensive phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and genotypic characterization, it is concluded that strain LOR1-02 T represents a novel species within the genus Paracraurococcus, for which the name Paracraurococcus lichenis sp. nov. is proposed. Two red-pigmented, strictly aerobic, pleomorphic rod-shaped and extremely halophilic archaea, designated strains HST01-2R(T) and HST03(T), were isolated from salt in a fish sauce sample from Thailand. The novel strains grew optimally at 37 °C, pH 7.0, and in the presence of 20-25 % (w/v) NaCl. The DNA G+C contents of the isolates were 61.6-62.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on a comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strains HST01-2R(T) and HST03(T) were placed in the radiation of species of the genus Haloarcula. The chemotaxonomic properties of the two strains, i.e. the presence of MK-8 and MK-8(H(2)) as the major menaquinone components and C(20)C(20) derivatives of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester, phosphatidylglycerol sulfate and a triglycosyl diether as major polar lipids, supported the assignment of the two strains to the genus Haloarcula. Nevertheless, several phenotypic features and the low DNA-DNA relatedness between the two strains and related species of the genus Haloarcula (13.4-46.9 %) enabled the strains to be distinguished from each other and from recognized species. Therefore, strains HST01-2R(T) and HST03(T) represent two novel species in the genus Haloarcula, for which the names Haloarcula salaria sp. nov. and Haloarcula tradensis sp. nov. are proposed, respectively. The type strains are HST01-2R(T) (=BCC 40029(T)=JCM 15759(T)=PCU 313(T)) and HST03(T) (=BCC 40030(T)=JCM 15760(T)=PCU 314(T)).

Forty-one isolates of moderately halophilic bacteria were isolated from fermented fish (pla-ra) in Thailand. On the basis of their phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, DNA-DNA relatedness and 16S rRNA gene sequences analyses, they were divided into six groups. The isolates in Group I to V were Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria. They contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan and menaquinone with seven isoprene units (MK-7). An isolate in Group VI was a Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium. The DNA G+C contents of tested strains ranged from 36.5-63 mol%. Ten strains (Group I) were identified as Virgibacillus dokdonensis, 13 isolates (Group II) as V. halodenitrificans, 14 isolates (Group III) as V. marismortui, 1 isolate (Group IV) as Virgibacillus sp., 2 isolates (Group V) as Bacillus vietnamnensis, and 1 isolate (Group VI) as Chromohalobacter salexigens. Isolate MS3-4 in Group IV was closely related to V. carmonensis KCTC 3819(T) (95.9%). This strain contained anteiso-C(15:0) (55.8%) and anteiso-C(17:0) (17.7%) as major cellular fatty acids and had phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid as polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of MS3-4 was 38.0 mol%. The strain from Group IV is proposed as Virgibacillus siamensis sp. nov. and MS3-4(T) is the type strain (JCM 15395(T) =PCU 312(T) =TISTR 1957(T)).

A novel strain, designated TP2-8(T), was isolated from fermented fish (pla-ra) in Thailand. It stained Gram-positive and the cells were aerobic, endospore-forming rods. The strain grew at pH 6-8 (optimum pH 7), 15-55 degrees C (optimum 37 degrees C) and 1-22 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 5-10 %). It contained meso-diaminopimelic in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. MK-7 and cellular fatty acids anteiso-C(15 : 0), iso-C(15 : 0) and anteiso-C(17 : 0) were major components. Polar lipids diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol and unidentified lipids were detected. The DNA G+C content was 37.6 mol%. Comparison of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain TP2-8(T) with those of other members of the family Bacillaceae indicated that it was a member of the genus Gracilibacillus (94.9-99.2 % sequence similarity) and was closely related to Gracilibacillus saliphilus YIM 91119(T) (99.2 % similarity), G. lacisalsi BH312(T) (98.6 %), G. orientalis XH-63(T) (97.7 %), 'G. quinghaiensis' YIM C229 (97.7 %) and G. boraciitolerans T-16X(T) (97.2 %). Strain TP2-8(T) showed low DNA-DNA relatedness (< or = 49%) to G. saliphilus YIM 91119(T), G. lacisalsi DSM 19029(T), G. orientalis CCM 7326(T), 'G. quinghaiensis' DSM 17858 and G. boraciitolerans JCM 21714(T). On the basis of the physiological and biochemical characteristics and molecular data presented, strain TP2-8(T) is proposed to represent a novel species, Gracilibacillus thailandensis sp. nov. (type strain TP2-8(T) =JCM 15569(T) =PCU 304(T) =TISTR 1881(T)).

A Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, moderately halophilic bacterium, strain ND1-1(T), was isolated from fermented fish (pla-ra) in Thailand. The cells were curved rods, motile and non-endospore-forming. The novel strain grew optimally at 37 degrees C, at pH 8 and in the presence of 9-10 % (w/v) NaCl. The predominant respiratory lipoquinone was Q-8. The major cellular fatty acids were C(16 : 0) and C(12 : 0). Polar lipid analysis revealed the presence of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C content was 49.0 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses indicated that strain ND1-1(T) was closely related to Salinivibrio costicola, which comprises three subspecies, and Salinivibrio proteolyticus with gene sequence similarities of 98.3-98.6 %. Strain ND1-1(T) showed low levels of DNA-DNA relatedness with S. costicola subsp. costicola JCM 15095(T) (33.2 %), S. costicola subsp. alcaliphilus DSM 16359(T) (38.4 %), S. costicola subsp. vallismortis JCM 15096(T) (59.7 %), and S. proteolyticus AF-2004(T) (42.1 %). On the basis of the physiological and biochemical characteristics and the molecular data presented, strain ND1-1(T) should be classified as a novel species of the genus Salinivibrio for which the name Salinivibrio siamensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ND1-1(T) (=JCM 14472(T)=PCU 301(T)=TISTR 1810(T)).

Two Gram-negative, rod-shaped, halophilic archaea, designated strains HIS40-3(T) and HDS3-1, were isolated from anchovy fish sauce (nam-pla) collected from two different locations in Thailand. The two strains were able to grow at 20-60 degrees C (optimum 37-40 degrees C), at 1.7-5.1 M NaCl (optimum 2.6-3.4 M NaCl) and at pH 5.5-8.5 (optimum pH 6.0-6.5). Hypotonic treatment with less than 1.7 M NaCl caused cell lysis. The major polar lipids of the isolates were C(20)C(20) and C(20)C(25) derivatives of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester, phosphatidylglycerol sulfate, two glycolipids and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C contents were 64.0-65.4 mol%. In addition to phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities showed that strains HIS40-3(T) and HDS3-1 were related most closely to species of the genus Natrinema. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strains HIS40-3(T) and HDS3-1 and the type strains of recognized Natrinema species were 99.1-96.6 %. The two novel strains could be distinguished from recognized Natrinema species on the basis of low levels of DNA-DNA relatedness and differences in whole-cell protein patterns and phenotypic properties. Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and DNA-DNA relatedness between the two strains were 99.7 and 77.7 %, respectively, suggesting that they should be classified as representing a single species. Based on these taxonomic data, strains HIS40-3(T) and HDS3-1 are considered to represent a novel species of the genus Natrinema, for which the name Natrinema gari sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HIS40-3(T) (=BCC 24370(T) =JCM 14663(T) =PCU 303(T)).

A Gram-negative, motile, rod-shaped, extremely halophilic archaeon, designated strain HPC1-2(T), was isolated from pla-ra, a salt-fermented fish product of Thailand. Strain HPC1-2(T) was able to grow at 20-60 degrees C (optimum at 37-40 degrees C), at 2.6-5.1 M NaCl (optimum at 3.4-4.3 M NaCl) and at pH 5.0-8.0 (optimum at pH 7.0-7.5). Hypotonic treatment with less than 1.7 M NaCl caused cell lysis. The major polar lipids of the isolate were C(20)C(20) derivatives of phosphatidylglycerol, methylated phosphatidylglycerol phosphate, phosphatidylglycerol sulfate, triglycosyl diether, sulfated triglycosyl diether and sulfated tetraglycosyl diether. The G+C content of the DNA was 65.5 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the isolate represented a member of the genus Halobacterium in the family Halobacteriaceae. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, strain HPC1-2(T) was related most closely to Halobacterium salinarum DSM 3754(T) (99.2%) and Halobacterium jilantaiense JCM 13558(T) (97.8%). However, low levels of DNA-DNA relatedness suggested that strain HPC1-2(T) was genotypically different from these closely related type strains. Strain HPC1-2(T) could also be differentiated based on physiological and biochemical characteristics. Therefore, strain HPC1-2(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Halobacterium, for which the name Halobacterium piscisalsi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HPC1-2(T) (=BCC 24372(T)=JCM 14661(T)=PCU 302(T)).

Fifteen strains of red-pigmented, strictly aerobic, coccoid, extremely halophilic archaea were isolated from fish sauce (nam-pla) produced in Thailand. They grew optimally at 37 degrees C, pH 6-8 and in the presence of 20-30 % (w/v) NaCl. The DNA G+C contents of the isolates were 60.0-61.8 mol%. They had MK-8(H2) as a major menaquinone component and C(20)C(20) and C(20)C(25) derivatives of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol methylphosphate and a sulfated glycolipid, S-DGA-1, as major polar lipid components. 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that a representative strain, HDB5-2(T), was affiliated with Halococcus dombrowskii JCM 12289(T), Halococcus qingdaonensis JCM 13587(T) and Halococcus morrhuae JCM 8876(T) (levels of similarity of 98.2-98.7 %). Based on data from DNA-DNA hybridization experiments, the 15 strains represented a single species, showing hybridization values of >78.9 % to representative strain HDB5-2(T), but were unrelated to either Halococcus dombrowskii JCM 12289(T) or Halococcus morrhuae JCM 8876(T), with levels of relatedness of <50 %. Moreover, a comparison of phenotypic properties discriminated these new isolates from recognized species of the genus Halococcus. The 15 strains are thus considered to represent a novel species of the genus Halococcus, for which the name Halococcus thailandensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HDB5-2(T) (=BCC 20213(T) =JCM 13552(T) =PCU 278(T)).

Fifteen strains of moderately halophilic, Gram-positive cocci were isolated from a traditional fermented shrimp paste ('ka-pi') produced in Thailand. These bacteria were strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-sporulating and catalase- and oxidase-positive. They produced orange pigment and grew in the presence of 1.5-25 % (w/v) NaCl. They grew optimally in 10 % (w/v) NaCl, at pH 8.5 and at 37 degrees C. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of l-Lys type. Menaquinone with six isoprene units (MK-6) was a major component. The dominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C(15 : 0) and iso-C(15 : 0). DNA G+C contents were in the range 44.5-47.5 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses indicated that representative strain PN1-2(T) was related most closely to Salinicoccus roseus JCM 14630(T), with 97.3 % similarity. The other novel strains were included in the same species based on their levels of DNA-DNA relatedness to strain PN1-2(T) (> or =76.6 %) but showed low DNA-DNA relatedness to S. roseus JCM 14630(T) (21.7 %). On the basis of the phenotypic and molecular data presented, the 15 novel strains are suggested to represent a single novel species of the genus Salinicoccus, for which the name Salinicoccus siamensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is PN1-2(T) (=JCM 12822(T) =PCU 242(T) =TISTR 1562(T)).

A Gram-positive, spore-forming and moderately halophilic bacterium was isolated from fermented fish (pla-ra) in Thailand. Cells of the isolate, RBU1-1(T), were strictly aerobic, motile rods and contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. Menaquinone with seven isoprene units (MK-7) was the predominant quinone. This isolate grew at 15-48 degrees C, pH 5-9 and in 2-30 % NaCl (optimally 10-20 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C(15 : 0) and anteiso-C(15 : 0). Polar lipid analysis revealed the presence of phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C content was 36.7 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain RBU1-1(T) was a member of the family Bacillaceae, and belonged to a cluster with Filobacillus and Tenuibacillus; strain RBU1-1(T) showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 96.0-96.9 % to members of these two genera. Strain RBU1-1(T) could also be differentiated from members of the genera Filobacillus and Tenuibacillus based on certain phenotypic characteristics such as cell-wall composition, mode of flagellation and growth pH range. Therefore, strain RBU1-1(T) is considered to represent a novel species in a new genus in the family Bacillaceae, for which the name Piscibacillus salipiscarius gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Piscibacillus salipiscarius is RBU1-1(T) (=JCM 13188(T)=PCU 270(T)=TISTR 1571(T)).

Gamma-glutamyl hydrolase with a molecular mass of 28 kDa was purified from the culture broth of Bacillus sp. isolated from Thai Thua-nao, a natto-like fermented soybean food. The purified enzyme hydrolyzed chemically synthesized oligo-gamma-L-glutamates but not oligo-gamma-D-glutamates and degraded gamma-polyglutamic acid to a hydrolyzed product of only about 20 kDa (with D- and L-glutamic acid in a ratio of 70:30), suggesting that the enzyme is a gamma-glutamyl hydrolase that cleaves the gamma-glutamyl linkage between L- and L-glutamic acid of gamma-polyglutamic acid.

Fifteen strains of extremely halophilic bacteria were isolated from fish sauce (nam-pla) collected in Thailand at various stages of the fish-fermentation process. The isolates were strictly aerobic, spore-forming, Gram-positive rods. They grew optimally in the presence of 20-26 % NaCl. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C(15 : 0) and anteiso-C(17 : 0). Polar lipid analysis revealed the presence of phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified glycolipids. The DNA G+C content was 42.1-43.1 mol%. On the basis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence, a representative strain, PS11-2(T), was found to be closely related to Lentibacillus juripiscarius JCM 12147(T) (97.3 % similarity). The 15 strains were included in the same species on the basis that the levels of DNA-DNA relatedness with strain PS11-2(T) were greater than 70 %. They could be distinguished from L. juripiscarius and other Lentibacillus species on the basis of several phenotypic characteristics and low levels of DNA-DNA relatedness (

Two actinomycete strains, TT2-10(T) and TT2-3, which produced long spore chains (more than 10 spores per chain), were isolated from peat swamp forest soil in Pattaloong Province, Thailand. Their taxonomic positions were determined using a polyphasic approach. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of these strains coincided with those of the family Micromonosporaceae, i.e. cell-wall chemotype II, muramic acid of the N-glycolyl type, whole-cell sugar pattern D and type II phospholipids. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences also indicated that these strains constitute a distinct lineage within the family Micromonosporaceae, sharing 91.3-93.8 % sequence similarity with members of this family. On the basis of their phenotypic and genotypic characteristics and their phylogenetic position, these strains represent a novel genus and species, for which the name Actinocatenispora thailandica gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Actinocatenispora thailandica is strain TT2-10(T) (=JCM 12343(T)=PCU 235(T)=DSM 44816(T)).

Morphological and chemotaxonomic characterization of actinomycete strain TT2-4T isolated from peat swamp forest soil in Pattaloong Province, Thailand, clearly demonstrated that this strain belongs to the genus Micromonospora. 16S rDNA sequence analysis for the strain supported the assignment of the strain to the genus Micromonospora and the similarity value of sequences between this strain and the closely related species, Micromonospora mirobrigensis was 99.1%, and M. carbonacea and M. matsumotoense were 98.8%. The DNA-DNA hybridization result and some physiological and biochemical properties indicated that strain TT2-4T was distinguished from the phylogenetically closest relatives. Based on these genotypic and phenotypic data, strain TT2-4T merits a new species in the genus Micromonospora and the name Micromonospora siamensis sp. nov. is proposed for the strain. The type strain is strain TT2-4T (=JCM 12769T =PCU 266T =TISTR 1554T).

Two actinomycete strains, LK2-10T and LK2-5, which produced single, non-motile spores, were isolated from peat swamp forest soil in Yala Province, Thailand. A polyphasic study was carried out to establish the taxonomic position of these strains. Morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics of these strains coincided with those of the genus Micromonospora. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences also indicated that these strains should be classified in the genus Micromonospora and clearly separated from their closest relative, Micromonospora nigra DSM 43818T. Furthermore, a combination of DNA-DNA hybridization results and physiological and biochemical properties indicated that these strains were distinguished from all recognized Micromonospora species. These strains therefore represent a novel species, for which the name Micromonospora eburnea sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LK2-10T (=JCM 12345T=PCU 238T=DSM 44814T=TISTR 1531T).

Eight strains of aerobic, spore-forming, Gram-positive, moderately halophilic bacteria were isolated from sauce (nam-pla and bu-du) produced in Thailand by the fermentation of fish. They grew optimally in the presence of 10 % NaCl, at 37 degrees C and pH 7.0. A diagnostic diamino acid, meso-diaminopimelic acid, was present in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C(15 : 0) and iso-C(16 : 0). Phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified glycolipid were found to be the major polar lipid components. The DNA G+C content was 42-43 mol%. These bacteria were further divided into two groups based on phenotypic characteristics and DNA-DNA similarities. Three strains of Group I were highly affiliated to the type strain of Lentibacillus salicampi in terms of phenotypic characterization and DNA-DNA similarities (96-102 %); accordingly, they were identified as strains of L. salicampi. A representative strain of Group II, strain IS40-3T, was most closely related to L. salicampi in terms of 16S rRNA-based phylogenetic analysis, although five strains of Group II could be distinguished from L. salicampi by means of several phenotypic properties, low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (95.2 %) and low DNA-DNA similarities (12-32 %). Therefore, the Group II strains should be included in a novel species of the genus Lentibacillus, for which the name Lentibacillus juripiscarius sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is IS40-3T (=JCM 12147T=PCU 229T=TISTR 1535T).

Four strains of acetic acid bacteria were isolated from flowers collected in Thailand. In phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and 16S-23S rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region sequences, the four isolates were located in the lineage of the genus Gluconobacter and constituted a separate cluster from the known Gluconobacter species, Gluconobacter oxydans, Gluconobacter cerinus, and Gluconobacter frateurii. In addition, the isolates were distinguished from the known species by restriction analysis of 16S-23S rDNA ITS region PCR products using three restriction endonucleases Bsp1286I, MboII, and AvaII. The DNA base composition of the isolates ranged from 55.3-56.3 mol% G+C. The four isolates constituted a taxon separate from G. oxydans, G. cerinus, and G. frateurii on the basis of DNA-DNA similarities. Morphologically, physiologically, and biochemically, the four isolates were very similar to the type strains of G. oxydans, G. cerinus, and G. frateurii; however, the isolates were discriminated in their growth at 37 degrees C from the type strains of G. cerinus and G. frateurii, and in their growth on L-arabitol and meso-ribitol from the type strain of G. oxydans. The isolates showed no acid production from myo-inositol or melibiose, which differed from the type strains of the three known species. The major ubiquinone homologue was Q-10. On the basis of the results obtained, Gluconobacter thailandicus sp. nov. was proposed for the four isolates. The type strain is isolate F149-1(T) (=BCC 14116(T)=NBRC 100600(T)=JCM 12310(T)=TISTR 1533(T)=PCU 225(T)), which had 55.8 mol% G+C, isolated from a flower of the Indian cork tree (Millingtonia hortensis) collected in Bangkok, Thailand.

A total of 622 and 110 commensal and forest rodents and shrews was examined in the urban and rural areas of Chanthaburi Province, Thailand. A higher density of commensal animals was found in urban than rural areas. Five enteropathogenic bacteria, and four helminth species of significant medical importance were collected. The Oriental rat-flea, X. cheopis was found prevalent among these animals. The findings of adult A. cantonensis worm in S. murinus the first reported case of the parasite developed into adult in an abnormal host.
