Maruca vitrata Fabricius (legume pod borer, LPB), the most serious economic pest of legume crops in the tropics, is primarily controlled by chemical pesticide application with serious consequences for the ecosystem and human health. In this study, various concentrations of three commercial biopesticides, NeemBaan®, Bactospeine® (Bacillusthuringiensis (Bt) subsp. kurstaki) and Florbac® (Btaizawai), were tested either in the field or laboratory or in both conditions. In the laboratory experiments, different concentrations of NeemBaan® exhibited significant effects on the mortality of all the tested larval instars and a mortality rate of over 80% was recorded at a dose of 3000 ppm. Bactospeine® was found to be more effective against M. vitrata than Florbac®. Bactospeine® applied at a lower dose of 500 ppm caused 100% mortality in the first-instar and second-instar larvae; however, at the same dose, Florbac® caused mortality of only 26.67% (first instar) and 20% (second instar). In the field experiments, a higher dose of NeemBaan® (6000 ppm) significantly reduced pod damage to approximately 20% in both the first and second cropping seasons. In conclusion, neem- and Bt-based biopesticide products have insecticidal potential to be used in an integrated pest management strategy for controlling M. vitrata in Thailand. Background: Determining the etiology of pneumonia is essential to guide public health interventions. Diagnostic test results, including from polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays of upper respiratory tract specimens, have been used to estimate prevalence of pneumococcal pneumonia. However limitations in test sensitivity and specificity and the specimen types available make establishing a definitive diagnosis challenging. Prevalence estimates for pneumococcal pneumonia could be biased in the absence of a true gold standard reference test for detecting Streptococcus pneumoniae.Methods: We conducted a case control study to identify etiologies of community acquired pneumonia (CAP) from April 2014 through August 2015 in Thailand. We estimated the prevalence of pneumococcal pneumonia among adults hospitalized for CAP using Bayesian latent class models (BLCMs) incorporating results of real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) testing of upper respiratory tract specimens and a urine antigen test (UAT) from cases and controls. We compared the prevalence estimate to conventional analyses using only UAT as a reference test.Results: The estimated prevalence of pneumococcal pneumonia was 8% (95% CI: 5-11%) by conventional analyses. By BLCM, we estimated the prevalence to be 10% (95% CrI: 7-16%) using binary qPCR and UAT results, and 11% (95% CrI: 7-17%) using binary UAT results and qPCR cycle threshold (Ct) values.Conclusions: BLCM suggests a > 25% higher prevalence of pneumococcal pneumonia than estimated by a conventional approach assuming UAT as a gold standard reference test. Higher quantities of pneumococcal DNA in the upper respiratory tract were associated with pneumococcal pneumonia in adults but the addition of a second specific pneumococcal test was required to accurately estimate disease status and prevalence. By incorporating the inherent uncertainty of diagnostic tests, BLCM can obtain more reliable estimates of disease status and improve understanding of underlying etiology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cross-border impact assessment of cascade reservoir operation on hydrological regimes is a vital prerequisite for the sustainable development and management of transboundary waters. However, assessment based on traditional hydrological modeling for transboundary rivers is limited by the availability of meteorological and hydrological data. In this study, a combined data-driven model (CV-LSTM) was built to simulate natural runoff without dam construction in the Upper Mekong River. Then, the simulated natural runoff was compared against the observation runoff influenced by dam operation to assess the impacts of reservoirs on flood and drought events. The research results are as follows: (1) CV-LSTM improved simulation performance by effectively utilizing spatial information from more extensive and diversified data, and it could overcome the limitation of classic data-driven models in that the spatial heterogeneity of input variables cannot be sufficiently considered. (2) Reservoir operation decreased the annual streamflow of the Upper Mekong River by 1.07% during the 2001–2016. In particular, with the operation of two mega reservoirs (Xiaowan and Nuozadu) after 2008, the annual streamflow decreased by 3.95%. (3) The upstream reservoirs exerted significant runoff regulative effects on the Lower Mekong during 2001–2016. Drought duration and severity significantly decreased at the Chiang Sean hydrological station, flood frequency decreased by 11%, and the mean day of flood occurrence decreased by 30%. This study developed an innovative approach, CV-LSTM, based on open-source spatial information, which could effectively analyze the cross-border impact of cascade reservoir operation. The results provide new insights into the quantitative assessment of the transboundary influence of upstream-downstream runoff change induced by cascade dams in international rivers. • CV-LSTM showed improved performance compared to traditional hydrological models. • CV-LSTM has good applicability to runoff modeling of transboundary rivers with open-source database. • Cascade reservoir operation in the Upper Mekong led to slightly decreased annual streamflow. • Cascade reservoirs effectively alleviated drought and flood disasters at Chiang Sean (northern Thailand). Background. Few population-based estimates of the incidence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in low- or middle-income countries are available. We describe the incidence and epidemiology of hospitalizations for RSV-associated acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI) detected by active population-based surveillance in 2 rural Thailand provinces during 2008–2011.Methods. Patients hospitalized with ALRI were systematically sampled. Consenting patients provided nasopharyngeal swab specimens for RSV testing by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction.Results. Of 13 982 enrolled patients hospitalized with ALRI, 1137 (8.1%) were RSV positive. After adjustment for sampling and nonenrollment, the incidence of RSV-associated ALRI hospitalization was 85 cases per 100 000 persons/year. The highest rates occurred among children aged <5 years (981 cases per 100 000 persons/year) and <1 year (1543 cases per 100 000 persons/year). Rates were low among older children and young adults but high among persons aged >65 years (130 cases per 100 000 persons/year). Eight (0.7%) RSV-infected study patients died during hospitalization. Annual RSV hospitalizations peaked during July-October with almost no documented RSV hospitalizations during January–June.Conclusions. Our findings demonstrate the substantial contribution of RSV to global ALRI burden, especially in children aged <5 years and the elderly, and underscore the urgent need for effective prevention measures.
