Thailand has the highest road traffic fatality rate in Southeast Asia, making road safety a critical public health concern. A 2015 World Health Organization (WHO) Report showed that speeding behavior was the most important determinant for road traffic crashes in Thailand. Here, we aimed to examine associations of socio-demographic factors (gender, age, socioeconomic status) with self-reported motorcycle speeding behavior. Additionally, we examined a potential role of time discounting and risk preference as mediators in the association of socio-demographic factors with speeding. We used data obtained from the Mahasarakham University Social Network Survey 2018 (MSUSSS) (N = 150). We ran linear network autocorrelation models (lnam) to account for the data's social network structure. We found that males are more likely than females to engage in speeding behavior (β = 0.140, p = 0.001) and to discount the future (β = 5.175, p = 0.017). However, further causal mediation analysis showed that time discounting does not mediate the gender-speeding association (p for mediation = 0.540). Although socioeconomic status (subjective social class) was not associated with speeding (β = 0.039, p = 0.177), age was marginally associated with speeding (β = 0.005, p = 0.093). Background. Road traffic accidents are the fourth leading cause of death in the entire population, and the first among the youth (ages 15-19 years) in Thailand. The situation in Thailand is worse than in neighboring low- to middle-income countries in the Southeast Asia region. Seventy-three percent of the deaths in the country are motorcycle drivers or passengers. Although motorcyclists (both drivers and passengers) have been obligated to wear helmets by law, the prevalence of helmet use nationwide is not high (43.7% in 2010). Methods. We performed a systematic review to examine potential social determinants of helmet use behavior (observational studies) and to summarize previous intervention studies to promote helmet use (interventional studies) in the country. Studies were identified in PubMed and Web of Science, and by additional review of Thai-written literature. Results. We identified 16 relevant studies for social determinants of helmet use and 5 relevant studies for promoting helmet use in Thailand. Our review shows that several factors such as teens and children (age), women (gender), rural areas (geography), and alcohol drinking (interaction with another behavior) are associated with non-helmet use. We also identified 4 interventional studies implemented in Thailand: 1 law enforcement program and 4 community-based educational programs. Although all the studies improved the prevalence of helmet use after the interventions, only 2 studies exceeded 50%. Conclusion. There is consistent evidence that being younger, being a woman, living in non-Bangkok areas, and drinking alcohol are associated with non-helmet use among motorcycle users in Thailand. • Characterization of field isolates of FMDV serotype A, acquired 2007–2019 in Thailand. • Antigenicities of the isolates changed every 2–3 years. • The isolates were phylogenetically divided into four temporal groups. • The 3C sequences were conserved, and VP1 and 3A sequences were variable. Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a persistent, major economic concern for livestock productivity, which is highly exacerbated by outbreaks in Thailand. FMD virus (FMDV) serotype A is more highly antigenic and genetically diverse than other serotypes, which has important implications for vaccine development as well as selection. Therefore, it is essential to continuously monitor antigenic and genetic changes of field isolates of FMDV serotype A. Here we used antisera against three vaccine strains (A/118/87, A/Sakolnakorn/97, and A/Lopburi/2012) to analyze the antigenicity of 133 field isolates of FMDV serotypes A in Thailand from 2007 to 2019. The majority of the isolates from 2007 to 2008 reacted only with the antiserum against strain A/118/87. In contrast, antigenic analysis revealed broad cross-reactivity and antigenic variations of the isolates from 2009 through 2019 against strains A/Sakolnakorn/97 and A/Lopburi/2012. These results indicate periodic changes in the antigenicity of field isolates of FMDV serotype A. Phylogenetic analysis of the VP1 region revealed that all isolates were of the Sea-97 lineage within the ASIA topotype. Analysis of the L-fragment genome sequences of 30 FMDV isolates collected throughout Thailand revealed highly variable amino acid sequences of VP1 and 3A, with the lowest average identity (94.56 %) and invariant (78.43 %) rates, respectively. The present findings indicate the importance of an active routine surveillance system incorporating antigenic and genetic analysis designated to continually update information about field isolates of FMDV serotype A. The bio-oil was largely produced by thermal pyrolysis of Jatropha-derived biomass wastes (denoted as Jatropha bio-oil) using a pilot plant with a capacity of 20 kg h-1 at Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), Thailand. Jatropha bio-oil is an unconventional type of bio-oil, which is mostly composed of fatty acids, fatty acid methyl esters, fatty acid amides, and derivatives, and consequently, it contains large amounts of heteroatoms (oxygen ~20 wt.%, nitrogen ~ 5 wt.%, sulfur ~ 1000 ppm.). The heteroatoms, especially nitrogen, are highly poisonous to the metal or sulfide catalysts for upgrading of Jatropha bio-oil. To overcome this technical problem, we reported a stepwise strategy for hydrotreating of 100 wt.% Jatropha bio-oil over mesoporous sulfide catalysts (CoMo/γ-Al2O3 and NiMo/γ-Al2O3) to produce drop-in transport fuels, such as gasoline- and diesel-like fuels. This study is very different from our recent work on co-processing of Jatropha bio-oil (ca. 10 wt.%) with petroleum distillates to produce a hydrotreated oil as a diesel-like fuel. Jatropha bio-oil was pre-treated through a slurry-type high-pressure reactor under severe conditions, resulting in a pre-treated Jatropha bio-oil with relatively low amounts of heteroatoms (oxygen < 20 wt.%, nitrogen < 2 wt.%, sulfur < 500 ppm.). The light and middle distillates of pre-hydrotreated Jatropha bio-oil were then separated by distillation at a temperature below 240 °C, and a temperature of 240–360 °C. Deep hydrotreating of light distillates over sulfide CoMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was performed on a batch-type high-pressure reactor at 350 °C and 7 MPa of H2 gas for 5 h. The hydrotreated oil was a gasoline-like fuel, which contained 29.5 vol.% of n-paraffins, 14.4 vol.% of iso-paraffins, 4.5 vol.% of olefins, 21.4 vol.% of naphthene compounds and 29.6 wt.% of aromatic compounds, and little amounts of heteroatoms (nearly no oxygen and sulfur, and less than 50 ppm of nitrogen), corresponding to an octane number of 44, and it would be suitable for blending with petro-gasoline. The hydrotreating of middle distillates over sulfide NiMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst using the same reaction condition produced a hydrotreating oil with diesel-like composition, low amounts of heteroatoms (no oxygen and less than 50 ppm of sulfur and nitrogen), and a cetane number of 60, which would be suitable for use in drop-in diesel fuel. The B20 fuels formulated by blending petro-diesel with the palm H-FAME with enhanced oxidation stability produced almost no sludges, suggesting that the palm H-FAME synthesized by partial hydrogenation of commercial palm BDF over supported Pd catalysts could be a reliable BDF source with high safety and security for use in high-blend fuels. • The profiling of commercial palm BDFs and its degradation mechanism were reported. • Hydrogenation of palm BDFs into H-FAME was performed by supported Pd catalysts. • Pd/SBA-15 of a high Pd dispersion was highly active and stable in H-FAME synthesis. • The B20 fuel made by blending petro-diesel with H-FAME gave excellent stability. • H-FAME is a new BDF source with high safety and security for high-blend fuels. Commercial palm oil-derived biodiesel fuels (palm BDFs) were thoroughly profiled based on the specifications of international fuel standards. Their main components were found to be fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) with different numbers of double bonds in the fatty acid tails in addition to small amounts of unreactive glycerides and impurities, the concentrations of which varied slightly among the regional producers in Thailand. The fuel properties of the as-received commercial palm BDFs met international fuel standards; unfortunately, the fuel degraded significantly over time, presumably due to the presence of polyunsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (poly-FAME) and impurities. To prevent this degradation, the commercial palm BDFs were upgraded into partially hydrogenated fatty acid methyl esters with outstanding oxidation stability (H-FAME, a new type of biodiesel fuel enriched in monounsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (mono-FAME)) over supported Pd catalysts with metallic Pd nanoparticles as the catalytically active sites in a batch-type glass reactor under mild conditions (80 °C and 0.5 MPa H 2). In the upgrading process, the unwanted component poly-FAME, which had low oxidation stability, was selectively converted into the target component, mono-FAME with high oxidation stability. Although the impurities in the commercial palm BDFs poisoned the supported Pd catalysts, particularly the sulfur species, the homemade mesoporous silica-supported Pd catalyst with a high Pd dispersion of 47% gave higher activity and tolerance to the impurities in the synthesis of palm H-FAMEs than the commercial alumina-supported Pd catalyst, which had a low Pd dispersion of 16%. In the accelerated oxidation stability test, the B20 fuels formulated by blending petro-diesel with the palm H-FAMEs with enhanced oxidation stability produced almost no deposits or sludges, whereas the fuels formulated by blending petro-diesel with commercial palm BDFs were seriously degraded and acidified, and formed deposits and sludges. Moreover, the palm H-FAMEs could be further purified by selective removal of the monoglycerides (MG) and steryl glucosides (SG) through wintering and adsorption posttreatments, and were determined to be a reliable BDF source with high safety and security for use in high blend fuels. Aims: To investigate susceptible human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles and their associations with clinical features in Thai patients with Behçet's disease (BD)., Method: Eighteen HLA-A and 36 HLA-B alleles were determined in 42 Thai BD patients and 99 healthy controls (HCs) by reverse line blot assay, and reconfirmed by MICRO SSP assay., Results: The BD patients had significantly higher allele frequency (AF) of HLA-B*51 than the HCs (13.10% vs 5.05%, P = .025). The AF of HLA-A*26, -A*26:01 and -B*51:01 also was higher and almost reached statistical significance (5.59% vs 1.52%, P = .054, 5.95% vs 1.52%, P = .054 and 10.71% vs 4.04%, P = .051, respectively). However, the BD patients had significantly higher AF of either HLA-A*26:01 or -B*51:01 (16.67% vs 5.56%, P = .005), or -A*26:01 or -B*51X (19.05% vs 6.56%, P = .003). The AF of HLA-B*51:01 and -B*51X increased significantly in -A*26:01 non-carrier BD patients (12.16% vs 4.17%, P = .024 and 14.86% vs 5.21%, P = .019, respectively); and that of HLA-A*26:01 was significantly higher in -B*51X non-carrier BD patients (7.58% vs 1.67%, P = .034). HLA-B*51:01 associated significantly with the presence of posterior uveitis and visual impairment (18.18% vs 2.50%, P = .031 for both conditions). HLA-B*51:01 was not observed in BD patients with gastrointestinal involvement or arthritis. Furthermore, the AF of HLA-B*51:01 was significantly higher in HLA-A*26:01 non-carrier BD patients without arthritis (17.30% vs 0%, P = .050)., Conclusion: HLA-B*51:01 was a susceptible allele for Thai BD patients, and associated with posterior uveitis and visual impairment. HLA-A*26:01 was another susceptible allele in HLA-B*51X non-carrier patients.
