Knowledge of the rifting and opening process of the Meso‐Tethys Ocean is important for understanding the evolution of the Tethys tectonic domain and for an in‐depth understanding of Tethys dynamics. Sedimentary rocks are faithful recorders of surface expressions of tectonic events and are thus expected to have recorded the rifting and opening of the Meso‐Tethys Ocean. This study presents petrography, sedimentology, zircon U–Pb geochronological data and Hf isotope data for the Carboniferous–Permian Shiquanhe stratigraphic succession in the Lhasa Terrane of the Tibetan Plateau. The data indicate that the 300 to 273 Ma Lagar and Angjie formations in the lower section of the Carboniferous–Permian Shiquanhe succession were deposited in the stable passive margin of northern Gondwana with sediment sources in Gondwanaland. However, the 273 to 252 Ma Xiala Formation in the upper section of the Carboniferous–Permian Shiquanhe succession was deposited in a tectonically active setting characterized by intense magmatic activity. Considering the transition from the Lagar and Angjie formations to the Xiala Formation, a significant change in depositional setting from tectonically stable to tectonically active occurred at ca 273 Ma. Similar Early–Middle Permian changes in depositional setting have also been identified in the South Qiangtang, Baoshan and Oman regions in the Tethyan tectonic domain. These widespread changes in depositional setting, together with Early–Middle Permian tectonic uplift and episodes of subsidence, as well as rift‐related magmatism in the South Qiangtang, Baoshan, Himalayan, Zagros, Oman and Turkey regions once located in northern Gondwana, constitute a complete record of continental rifting–ocean opening associated with the diachronous opening of the Meso‐Tethys Ocean during the Early–Middle Permian. The nature, extension, and evolution of the Meso-Tethys still remain unclear to researchers, and this has thereby hindered in-depth study of the Tethys tectonic domain. In this paper, we review the geology of the Tethys tectonic domain and suggest that the Meso-Tethys is a massive tectonic zone divided into three segments. The central segment includes the Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone on the Tibetan Plateau and the Shyok Suture Zone in the South Pamir Mountains. This segment has been well studied and is the key link that fully records the birth, evolution, and demise of the Meso-Tethys Ocean from the Permian to Cretaceous, as well as the subsequent continental collision and crustal uplift. The western segment includes the Sanandaj-Sirjan Suture Zone and the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan Suture Zone in the Middle East. Due to limited research on the western segment, our understanding of it is mainly derived from records of the Jurassic forearc extension,development of arc, and subsequent arc-continent collision. The eastern segment includes the Shan Boundary in Southeast Asia. It has received widespread attention in recent years, and it contains complete records of the Jurassic subduction of the Meso-Tethys Ocean. Based on the latest comprehensive data, we propose that the evolution of the Meso-Tethys Ocean can be divided into four stages: (1) the Early Permian rifting and opening stage; (2) the Middle Permian-Triassic seafoor spreading stage; (3) the Late Triassic-Jurassic convergence stage; and (4) the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous diachronous closure from east to west in the central segment and transition from the Meso-Tethys evolution to the Neo-Tethys evolution in both the eastern and western segments. The Meso-Tethys Ocean underwent complex evolution for at least ∼160 Myrs. It has an east-west length of over 8000 km and a maximum north-south width of close to 5000 km during the Late Triassic, which basically reached the scale of the current Indian Ocean. It was an important ocean basin that coexisted with the Paleo- and Neo-Tethys oceans, a key intermediate link in the evolution of the Tethys, and one of the major contributors to the continuous disintegration of Gondwana and the accretion of the Eurasian continent. Its complex evolution process and multiple periods of accretion resulted in the formation of complex geological records and the wide scale of the Meso-Tethys (e.g., the Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone), making this area a rare natural laboratory for in-depth study of orogenesis, which is of great significance for studying tectonic processes on the global scale from seafloor geology to continental accretion and mineralization. New zircon U–Pb ages, major- and trace-element data, and Hf isotopic compositions are presented for bimodal volcanic rocks of the Zhaga Formation (ZF) in the western–middle segment of the Bangong–Nujiang suture zone (BNSZ), northern Tibet. The genesis of these rocks is described, and implications for late-stage evolution of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethyan Ocean (BNTO) are considered. Detailed studies show that the ZF bimodal rocks, which occur as layers within a typical bathyal to abyssal flysch deposit, comprise MORB-type basalt that formed at a mid-ocean ridge, and low-K calc-alkaline A-type rhyolite derived from juvenile crust. The combination of MORB-type basalt, calc-alkaline A-type rhyolite, and bathyal to abyssal flysch deposits in the ZF leads us to propose that they formed as a result of ridge subduction. The A-type ZF rhyolites yield LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb ages of 118–112 Ma, indicating formation during the Early Cretaceous. Data from the present study, combined with regional geological data, indicate that the BNTO underwent conversion from ocean opening to ocean closure during the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous. The eastern segment of the BNTO closed during this period, while the western and western–middle segments were still at least partially open and active during the Early Cretaceous, accompanied by ridge subduction within the Bangong–Nujiang Tethyan Ocean. When and how the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean closed is a highly controversial subject. In this paper, we present a detailed study and review of the Cretaceous ophiolites, ocean islands, and flysch deposits in the middle and western segments of the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone (BNSZ), and the Cretaceous volcanic rocks, late Mesozoic sediments, and unconformities within the BNSZ and surrounding areas. Our aim was to reconstruct the spatial-temporal patterns of the closing of the middle and western segments of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean. Our conclusion is that the closure of the ocean started during the Late Jurassic and was mainly complete by the end of the Early Cretaceous. The closure of the ocean involved both 'longitudinal diachronous closure' from north to south and 'transverse diachronous closure' from east to west. The spatial-temporal patterns of the closure process can be summarized as follows: the development of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan oceanic lithosphere and its subduction started before the Late Jurassic; after the Late Jurassic, the ocean began to close because of the compressional regime surrounding the BNSZ; along the northern margin of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean, collisions involving the arcs, back-arc basins, and marginal basins of a multi-arc basin system first took place during the Late Jurassic-early Early Cretaceous, resulting in regional uplift and the regional unconformity along the northern margin of the ocean and in the Southern Qiangtang Terrane on the northern side of the ocean. However, the closure of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean cannot be attributed to these arc-arc and arc-continent collisions, because subduction and the development of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan oceanic lithosphere continued until the late Early Cretaceous. The gradual closure of the middle and western segments of Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean was diachronous from east to west, starting in the east in the middle Early Cretaceous, and being mainly complete by the end of the Early Cretaceous. This article reports the depositional environment and provenance for the Tianquanshan Formation in the Longmuco–Shuanghu–Lancangjiang suture zone, and uses these to better understand the tectonic evolution of this region. Zircons in the andesite of the Tianquanshan Formation yielded concordia ages of 246, 247, and 254 Ma, indicating that the Tianquanshan Formation formed during the late Permian–Early Triassic. The Tianquanshan Formation consists of flysch and ocean island rock assemblages, indicating that the Longmuco–Shuanghu–Lancangjiang Palaeo-Tethys Ocean continued to exist as a mature ocean in the late Permian–Early Triassic. The detrital zircons in the greywackes of the Tianquanshan Formation yielded peak ages of 470–620, 710–830, 910–1080, 1450–1660, and 2400–2650 Ma, indicating the provenance of the Tianquanshan Formation was either Indian Gondwana or terranes that have an affinity with Indian Gondwana in the Tibetan Plateau (i.e. the Southern Qiangtang, Lhasa, and Himalayan terranes). The Ordovician quartzites, Carboniferous sandstones, Carboniferous–Permian diamictites, and the Upper Permian–Lower Triassic greywackes in the Southern Qiangtang, Lhasa, and Himalayan terranes all contain detrital zircons with youngest ages of ca. 470 Ma, indicating their source areas have been in a stable tectonic environment since the Ordovician, and this inference is supported by the continuous deposition in a littoral–neritic passive margin in these regions from the Ordovician to the lower Permian. Combining the present results with regional geological data, we infer that the Southern Qiangtang, Lhasa, and Himalayan terranes were all in a stable passive continental margin along the northern part of Indian Gondwana during the long period from the Ordovician to the early Permian. The uplift of the Tibetan Plateau has been widely associated with India-Asia continental collision during the Cenozoic. However, recent studies have proposed that a proto-Tibetan Plateau in central Tibet was elevated during the late Mesozoic. This paper improves that understanding by focusing on the Cretaceous terrestrial strata in the Gerze area of central Tibet. Our studies suggest that the Qushenla Formation in the Nare area contains alluvial fan conglomerate intercalated with rhyolitic ignimbrite and vesicular rhyolite. Zircon U Pb dating of rhyolitic ignimbrite (103.9 ± 1.4 Ma) and two granitoid boulders of conglomerate (106.0 ± 1.6 and 106.1 ± 1.5) indicate that the Qushenla Formation was deposited during the late Albian. The compositions of the Qushenla Formation conglomerate were dominated by hypabyssal intrusions on the southern Qiangtang terrane, which recorded a rapid uplift and denudation process in the late Albian, accompanied by intense volcanic eruptions. The second set of terrestrial strata is the Upper Cretaceous Jingzhushan Formation alluvial fan-braided river deposits, which can be divided into a lower conglomerate member (Member 1) and a upper sandstone member (Member 2). The large amount of bioclastic limestone fragments in the Member 1 show that they come from the Upper Cretaceous Langshan Formation in the central and northern Lhasa subterranes. While in the Member 2, abundant limestone debris, detrital zircon yielding Jurassic–Cretaceous ages with ε Hf (t) values between −18.6 and + 8.4, and occurrence of volcanic and ancient zircon grains indicate a volcanic-sedimentary source located in the central and northern Lhasa subterranes, with some input from the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone. This suggests that the central and northern Lhasa subterranes experienced rapid crustal uplift in the Late Cretaceous, thus ending the marine sedimentary environment since the Jurassic. Based on the temporal and spatial sedimentary characteristics of the Qushenla and Jingzhushan formations as well as the regional data, our integrated study suggests that the central plateau (Lhasa and southern Qiangtang terranes) experienced a complex uplift history during the Aptian-Turonian, with southwards stepwise growth in time and space. Furthermore, the uplift mechanism of the central plateau is complex, which was controlled by the diachronous closure of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean from east to west during the Early Cretaceous, and by the far-field forces associated with northwards subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean during the Late Cretaceous. We studied oceanic mafic igneous rocks of the Mesozoic Banggongco–Nujang suture zone in western Tibet to constrain the tectonic evolution of these rocks and the region as a whole. Two transects were accomplished. Seven basalt samples from the base of the Nadongshan transect (N1 basalts) have flat chondrite-normalized rare earth element (REE) and primitive-mantle-normalized trace element variation diagrams that are similar to MORB. Two basalt samples from the base of the Nadongshan transect (N1 basalts), ten gabbro samples from the middle of Nadongshan transect (N2 gabbros), four basalt samples from the bottom of Tanjiuxiama transect (T1 basalts), and four basalt samples from the top of the Tanjiuxiama transect (T2 basalts) are alkali basalts and have light rare earth element (LREE)-enriched chondrite-normalized REE patterns, and have primitive-mantle-normalized trace element variation diagrams that are enriched in highly incompatible elements, similar to OIB. LREE concentrations increase from N1 basalts to the T1 and T2 basalts, which have (La/Yb)Nup to 16 and have even higher (Ce/Sm)N. These data indicate that the Nadong ocean island is an Azores-type ocean island that formed during the mature stage of development of the Banggongco–Nujiang Ocean. The conformable nature of the Nadong ocean island with the Mugagangri Group flysch indicates that the Banggongco–Nujiang Ocean was never a large ocean. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Timing of the opening of the Meso-Tethys Ocean, represented by the Bangong–Nujiang Suture Zone on the Tibetan Plateau, remains controversial. Further research is required to understand the breakup of the northern Gondwana margin and the tectonic evolution of the Tethyan realm. In this study, we present petrography, U-Pb dating and Hf isotopic data for detrital zircons from Upper Carboniferous–Upper Permian strata in the South Qiangtang Terrane on the Tibetan Plateau. These data, together with data from previous literature, indicate a youngest detrital zircon age peak of ca. 550 Ma for Upper Carboniferous–Lower Permian strata. This is far older than the depositional age of ca. 300 Ma and indicates a source in the stable Gondwana Continent. Upper Permian strata yield younger ages (490–247 Ma) with peaks at ca. 460, 355, 290 and 260 Ma, indicating a source in the active South Qiangtang Terrane. Combined with the unconformity between the Lower and Upper Permian strata in the western South Qiangtang Terrane, we conclude that a significant change in sedimentary provenance occurred at 280–260 Ma. This provenance change might have resulted from the 300–279 Ma rifting magmatism on the northern Indian margin of Gondwana (e.g., South Qiangtang). The 300–279 Ma magmatism is interpreted to reflect the early stages of rifting, and the subsequent 280–260 Ma sedimentary provenance change is interpreted as the later stage, both of which established a complete Early–Middle Permian (300–260 Ma) rifting process that marks the opening of the Meso-Tethys Ocean. • A change in sedimentary provenance occurred at 280–260 Ma in the South Qiangtang. • This provenance change is associated with the 300–279 Ma rifting magmatism. • The 300–260 Ma rifting process marks the opening of the Meso-Tethys Ocean.
