The distribution of trace metals in remote alpine region is an effective way to understand the impacts of regional human activity and vegetation on the alpine ecosystem. In this study, the concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the soils of Gongga Mountain, Eastern Tibetan Plateau, were investigated to reveal their seasonal and spatial distribution and enrichment state, and to decipher the effects of atmospheric deposition and vegetation on their distributions among five vegetation zones. The results showed that the concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Zn were higher in the O horizon than in other horizons despite the seasonal changes, whereas Cu was enriched in the C horizon. The enrichment states of the metals studied in the soils decreased in the order of Cd > Pb > Zn > Cu. Cd and Pb were mainly sourced from atmospheric deposition; Zn was from both atmospheric deposition and parent materials, whereas Cu was mainly from parent materials. Seasonally, the trace metals were generally higher in May and December but lower in September, implying the impact of vegetation on the distribution of trace metals under the plant uptake and the litter decomposition. Spatially, the higher enrichment of Cu, Pb, and Zn in the soils existed in the mixed broadleaf-coniferous forests and coniferous forests (approximately 3000 m above sea level). The results suggested that atmospheric deposition and biological processes are main factors controlling the seasonal and spatial distribution of trace metals in the soils of the remote alpine ecosystem. This study aimed to investigate and discuss the occurrence and accumulation of mercury in the fruiting bodies of wild-growing fungi (Macromycetes) collected from montane forests in two regions of southwestern China with differences in soil geochemistry, climate and geographical conditions. Fungal mycelia in soils of the subalpine region of the Minya Konka (Gongga Mountain) in Sichuan and in the highlands of Yunnan efficiently accumulated mercury in fruiting bodies (mushrooms). The examined sites in Yunnan with highly mineralized red and yellow soils showed Hg contents ranging from 0.066 to 0.28 mg kg dry biomass (db) which is roughly similar to the results obtained for samples collected from sites with dark soils relatively rich in organic matter from a remote, the subalpine region of Minya Konka. Due to the remoteness of the subalpine section of Minya Konka, as well as its elevation and climate, airborne mercury from long-range transport could be deposited preferentially on the topsoil and the Hg levels determined in soil samples taken beneath the fruiting bodies were up to 0.48 mg kg dry matter. In Yunnan, with polymetallic soils (Circum-Pacific Mercuriferous Belt), Amanita mushrooms showed mercury in caps of fruiting bodies of up to 7.3 mg kg dry biomass. Geogenic Hg from the mercuriferous belt seems to be the overriding source of mercury accumulated in mushrooms foraged in the regions of Yunnan, while long-range atmospheric transport and subsequent deposition are the mercury sources for specimens foraged in the region of Minya Konka. Partial melting of granulites generates melts, which causes the modification of continental crust. However, the detailed mechanisms of this partial melting and related magmatic processes are debated. In this study, we investigated how crustal melting of granulites generated late Miocene (ca. 6.0 Ma) silicic volcanic rocks in the Chibuzhangcuo area of the Qiangtang Block, Tibet. Various peritectic textures (e.g., quartz inclusions in clinopyroxene and fluorhydroxyl phlogopite) suggest that the pyroxenes were derived from a residual granulite phase and peritectic reactions, and were then entrained into the partial melts. The F-rich mica, granulite mineral assemblages, and high titanomagnetite–ilmenite (811–975 °C) and zircon saturation (836–867 °C) temperatures indicate the silicic magmas were high-temperature and water-poor. The geochemical and isotopic compositions of the silicic volcanic rocks are similar to those of middle–lower crustal intermediate–mafic granulite xenoliths in Cenozoic volcanic rocks in the Qiangtang Block. We suggest that these volcanic rocks were generated by partial melting of hydrous mineral-bearing granulites, triggered by an underlying thermal anomaly associated with the high crustal heat-flow of the central Tibetan Plateau. This work indicates that the occurrence of restitic hydrous mineral and perturbation of thermal anomaly are the primary conditions to cause the partial melting of granulite. As the melting went on, the residual granulite phase and peritectic minerals were likely to be preferentially entrained into the melt due to the erosion effect caused by the continued melt flow at the sites of melting. • Late Miocene silicic volcanic rocks erupted in central Tibet have been investigated. • These rocks are similar to granulites in textures and carry peritectic phases. • The studied rocks recorded the crustal anatexis of granulite in central Tibet. • Partial melting of the granulites was caused by an underlying thermal anomaly. • A high crustal heat-flow of the central Tibet was established since the late Miocene.
