Human activities have caused dramatic land use changes, impacting plant community composition, diversity and function. Fertilization and grazing are the two most common land use modes in grasslands. To understand the effects of grazing and fertilization on sexual and asexual recruitment in alpine grasslands, we conducted a demographic field investigation of species recruitment in an alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau. Grazing and fertilization had different effects on the quantity and diversity of sexual and asexual recruitment. Sexual recruitment increased significantly in grazed plots, but decreased significantly in fertilized plots. Asexual recruitment increased significantly in fertilized plots, but decreased significantly in grazed plots. For functional groups, grazing significantly reduced offspring recruitment of graminoids, but significantly increased offspring recruitment of forbs and legumes; fertilization significantly reduced offspring recruitment of forbs and legumes, but significantly increased offspring recruitment of graminoids. Furthermore, offspring diversity from sexual recruitment was significantly higher than from asexual recruitment in grazed plots, and as compared to non-grazed and fertilized grasslands. Our studies indicate that moderate grazing disturbance has positive effects on seedling recruitment and offspring diversity, and fertilization has negative effects on offspring diversity, but may significantly increase asexual recruitment. Overgrazing significantly affects alpine meadows in ways similar to grasslands in other areas. Fencing to exclude grazers is one of the main management practices used to protect alpine meadows. However, it is not known if fencing can improve soil properties and soil organic carbon storage by restraining grazing in alpine meadows. We studied the long-term (nine-year) effects of fencing on soil properties, soil organic carbon and nitrogen storage compared with continued grazing in an alpine swamp meadow of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, NW China. Our results showed that fencing significantly improved vegetation cover and aboveground biomass. There were significant effects of fencing on pH value, soil bulk density, and soil moisture. Long-term fencing favored the increase of soil total nitrogen, soil organic matter, soil organic carbon, soil microbial biomass carbon and soil carbon storage compared with grazed meadows. Our study suggests that long-term fencing to prevent disturbance could greatly affect soil organic carbon and nitrogen storage with regard to grazed meadows. Therefore, it is apparent from this study that fencing is an effective restoration approach of with regard to the soil’s storage ability for carbon and nitrogen in alpine meadow of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. Grazing is one of the most important factors influencing community structure and productivity in natural grasslands. Fencing to exclude grazers is one of the main management practices used to protect grasslands. Can fencing improve grassland community status by restraining grazing? We conducted a field community study and indoor soil analyses to determine the long-term effects of fencing and grazing on the above-ground community and soil in a Kobresia-dominated meadow in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, NW China. Our results showed that fencing significantly improved above-ground vegetation productivity but reduced plant density and species diversity. Long-term fencing favored the improvement of forage grass functional groups and restrained the development noxious weed functional groups. There were significant positive effects of fencing on below-ground organic matter, total nitrogen, available nitrogen, total phosphorus and available phosphorus. The productivity of grazed meadow showed a weak decrease over time. There were long-term decreasing trends for plant density both in fenced and grazed meadows. Our study suggests that grazing can be considered as a useful management practice to improve species diversity and plant density in long-term fenced grasslands and that periodic grazing and fencing is beneficial in grassland management. Many different selection stresses could affect seed mass. We collected evidence in support of the hypothesis that there exists a significant positive effect of altitude on both intraspecific and interspecific changes in seed mass. We weighed 71 seed species, including 44 species that occurred in both low-altitude and high-altitude Kobresia communities in alpine meadows of the Qinghai—Tibetan plateau. We calculated average seed mass, seed mass variance within community, and seed mass range for the Kobresia community at two altitudes. In 50% of the 44 common seed species, mass increased with altitude, but in the other 50%, mass decreased. Average seed mass within communities decreased with altitude. There was no single significant relationship, positive or negative, between seed mass and altitude for all species in the two Kobresia communities. The unique species in the low-altitude site presented a larger mean seed than the unique species in the high-altitude site. However, the higher-altitude Kobresia community had a lower average community seed mass and seed mass range than the low-altitude community. Our results indicated that mean seed mass of each species responded to altitude within community, but did not show a uniform trend for seed mass change between communities along altitudinal gradients. Understanding the onset and episodes of magmatism is essential for comprehending tectonic history, crustal extension, and geodynamic processes. However, due to physical constraints, many places have remained unexplored, which makes it difficult to understand their geological evolution. Following thorough sedimentary provenance analysis, the chronology and periods of magmatism within a drainage area can be revealed through the detrital zircon U-Pb dating method. Here, we present detrital zircon U-Pb ages (n = 1429) obtained from sediments in modern rivers of the Gongga batholith in the eastern Tibetan Plateau. Our results reveal five major magmatic episodes since the early Mesozoic. Three episodes of magmatism occurred in the early to middle Mesozoic (ca. 230–200 Ma, ca. 200–180 Ma, and ca. 180–160 Ma), followed by a protracted period of magmatic quiescence. During the Cenozoic, there were two main periods of magmatism at ca. 50–25 Ma and ca. 25–5 Ma. This is consistent with bedrock geochronological data acquired previously. We propose that the Mesozoic magmatism was most likely caused by postcollisional extension after the closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. The two Cenozoic magmatic episodes are coeval with the progressive intensification of Xianshuihe fault activity. Consequently, these episodes highlight two significant phases of plateau growth in the eastern Tibetan Plateau: the northward push of the Indian plate and “lateral extrusion,” which is consistent with the ongoing subduction of the Indian plate beneath the Eurasian plate.
