This study finds that the observed decrease in winter–spring Tibetan Plateau snow depth since 2000 has played an important role in weakening the correlation between rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones over the western North Pacific and tropical Indian Ocean sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Tibetan Plateau snow depth modulates convective activity through changes in the South Asian high. Increased Tibetan Plateau snow depth promotes basinwide tropical Indian Ocean cooling in spring through a Gill-type response. In the following seasons, downward latent heat flux anomalies associated with a weaker monsoon circulation contributes to warm SST anomalies over the western tropical Indian Ocean, thus favoring a positive phase of the Indian Ocean dipole. This evolution of tropical Indian Ocean SSTs associated with anomalously high Tibetan Plateau snow depth potentially weakens the relationship between rapidly intensifying tropical cyclone frequency and spring tropical Indian Ocean SSTs. When the effect of Tibetan Plateau snow depth is removed via partial correlation analysis, we find a significant relationship between spring tropical Indian Ocean SSTs and rapidly intensifying tropical cyclones as well as corresponding large-scale environmental factors. The results of this study enhance understanding of changes in tropical cyclone intensity and have implications for seasonal forecasting of tropical cyclone intensity over the western North Pacific basin. This study investigates the role of the interannual variation of boreal winter (December–February) snow cover over the Tibetan Plateau (TPSC) in modulating the relationship between the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) and tropical cyclogenesis over the western North Pacific (WNP) during the following boreal summer (June–October). During the boreal summer following a high snow cover anomaly (SCA), MJO-associated convection tends to be confined to the west of 140 °E, coinciding with more frequent tropical cyclone (TC) activity in this region. By contrast, there tends to be stronger MJO-associated convection extending farther east during years following low SCA. The MJO-associated convection extends to ~ 160 °E over the WNP basin with a peak around 140 °E. Thus, more TCs form farther east in the WNP in these years. We use composite analyses of large-scale environmental factors to demonstrate that low-level relative vorticity is one of the most important factors in controlling TCs in response to the change of MJO-associated convection between years with high SCA and low SCA. Meanwhile, eddy kinetic energy variations associated with the MJO are consistent with changes in tropical cyclogenesis over the WNP basin between years with high and low SCA. The Asian summer monsoon plays an important role in linking prior winter TPSC to MJO activity in the following summer. During high-SCA years, increased snow cover results in positive soil moisture anomalies and cooling over the Tibetan Plateau, thus weakening the following summer Asian monsoon and weakening associated water vapor advection, while the opposite chain of events occurs in low-SCA years. These changes in high-SCA years are favorable for MJO propagation and are unfavorable for MJO propagation in low-SCA years. Meanwhile, the interannual variation of SCA exerts a significant impact on the upper-tropospheric circulation and thus changes in vertical wind shear. During high-SCA years, there are anomalous upper-level easterlies in the Indian Ocean and upper-level westerlies in the Pacific Ocean, which result in anomalous easterly wind shear in the Indian Ocean and anomalous westerly shear in the Pacific Ocean. The opposite shear pattern arises in low-SCA years. In addition to changes in wind shear, the background vertical motion associated with changes in TPSC may also be partly responsible for changes in MJO activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies have revealed a significantly negative correlation between prior winter snow cover over the Tibetan Plateau (TPSC) and tropical cyclone genesis frequency (TCF) over the western North Pacific (WNP) in the following typhoon season. This study revisited this relationship based on long-term observational data. The results showed that the interannual correlation between TCF over the WNP and TPSC experienced a shift in the early 1990s. This correlation is significant during only 1993-2012 and is considerably weak during 1976-1992. The possible reasons causing the shift were examined further, and the results demonstrated that the central Pacific (CP) El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has played a vital role in intensifying the interannual relationship between TCF over the WNP and TPSC since the early 1990s. During 1993-2012, TPSC was negatively related to CP ENSO. When TPSC was higher than (lower than) normal, CP ENSO was often in its cold (warm) phase. Such a combination remarkably enhances the relationship of TPSC with the zonal land-sea thermal difference and thus with the summer monsoon over the WNP. Additionally, it enhances the modulation of TPSC on the dynamical environments controlling TCF. As a result, the linkage between TPSC and TCF was significantly strengthened in this period. In sharp contrast, due to the weak relationship between TPSC and ENSO followed by the weak modulation of TPSC on the summer monsoon over the WNP and the dynamical environment during 1976-1992, the linkage between TPSC and TCF was weak during this time period. The results from additional dynamical diagnostic analyses further showed that during 1993-2012 CP ENSO modulated the barotropic energy conversion of zonal winds over the WNP, contributing to the intensified relationship between TPSC and TCF.
