The surface air temperature (SAT) trend on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) was 3.45°C 100 years−1 from 1961 to 2014. The multi‐model ensemble (MME) of 33 coupled models participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase six (CMIP6) was about 1°C 100 years−1 lower than the observation. Although MME generally shows better skill in reproducing the distribution of SAT trend over TP than most of the CMIP6 models, its performance is greatly degraded by a small group of models, about 12% on average, with large biases. In this paper, the constrained multi‐model ensemble (CMME) based on a certain observation‐based threshold is used to constrain future projections of the SAT trend over TP. Compared with the MME results, the improvements in CMME are mainly over the eastern plateau in historical simulation and are relative to the reduction of the model biases to carbon dioxide (CO2) forcing. Under the high‐emission SSP5‐8.5 scenario, SAT increases significantly over the entire TP. The constraint of CMME on the MME is mainly over the eastern plateau with a difference of 0.5°C 100 years−1, about 6% of the MME results. Under the intermediate‐emission scenario SSP2‐4.5, the effect of CMME is relatively smaller, but the corresponding spatial distribution is similar to that under the SSP5‐8.5 scenario. The CMIP6 models tend to underestimate the warming trend projections over the water source regions in the northeastern plateau and should be noticed. A time-lagged ensemble method is used to improve 6-15 day precipitation forecasts from the Beijing Climate Center Atmospheric General Circulation Model, version 2.0.1. The approach averages the deterministic predictions of precipitation from the most recent model run and from earlier runs, all at the same forecast valid time. This lagged average forecast (LAF) method assigns equal weight to each ensemble member and produces a forecast by taking the ensemble mean. Our analyses of the Equitable Threat Score, the Hanssen and Kuipers Score, and the frequency bias indicate that the LAF using five members at time-lagged intervals of 6 h improves 6-15 day forecasts of precipitation frequency above 1 mm d and 5 mm d in many regions of China, and is more effective than the LAF method with selection of the time-lagged interval of 12 or 24 h between ensemble members. In particular, significant improvements are seen over regions where the frequencies of rainfall days are higher than about 40%-50% in the summer season; these regions include northeastern and central to southern China, and the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. The nocturnal precipitation in the Sichuan Basin in summer has been studied in many previous works. This paper expands the study on the diurnal cycle of precipitation in the Sichuan Basin to the whole year. Results show that the nocturnal precipitation has a specific quasi-stationary feature in the basin. It occurs not only in summer but also in other three seasons, even more remarkable in spring and autumn than in summer. There is a prominent eastward timing delay in the nocturnal precipitation, that is, the diurnal peak of precipitation occurs at early-night in the western basin whereas at late-night in the center and east of the basin. The Tibetan Plateau plays an essential role in the formation of this quasi-stationary nocturnal precipitation. The early-night peak of precipitation in the western basin is largely due to strong ascending over the plateau and its eastern lee side. In the central and eastern basin, three coexisting factors contribute to the late-night peak of precipitation. One is the lower-tropospheric southwesterly flow around the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, which creates a strong cyclonic rotation and ascendance in the basin at late-night, as well as brings abundant water vapor. The second is the descending motion downslope along the eastern lee side of the plateau, together with an air mass accumulation caused by the warmer air mass transport from the southeast of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, creating a diabatic warming at low level of the troposphere in the central basin. The third is a cold advection from the plateau to the basin at late-night, which leads to a cooling in the middle troposphere over the central basin. Climate models participated in the High Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP) of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 6 (CMIP6) are evaluated to reveal the impact of enhanced resolution in simulating the climatological distribution of precipitation over China. The multi-model mean (MME) of five models with 30–50 km horizontal resolution in the atmosphere (MME-50) had a better performance in reproducing the observed spatial patterns of precipitation over Northwest China and Southwest China than the MME of their lower-resolution (70–140 km) models (MME-100). Such an improvement is mainly attributed to the topographical rainfall reproduced by the higher-resolution models, which have the superiority of reproducing the local vertical circulation over the complex terrain. The MME-50 also improves the skill score of the 850-hPa southwesterly of the Indian-Burma trough relative to the MME-100, which may contribute to better simulation skill of precipitation over Southwest China. The MME-50 (0.92) has a close skill score to the MME-100 (0.91) in the simulation of East Asian summer monsoon, which explains why the MME-50 cannot improve the simulation skill of the precipitation over Southeast China and Northern China. The skill score of the precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) simulated by the MME-50 is even lower than the MME-100, revealing that simulating the climate over the high plateau is still a challenge for the high-resolution models.
