The Yellow River originates on the Tibetan Plateau and transports vast amounts of terrestrial sediment to the ocean. However, previous studies have not reached a consensus as to when and how the Yellow River first began to flow into the sea. Here we present Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data and a high-resolution clay mineral record of a 200-m-long sediment core recovered from the modern Yellow River delta. The changes in Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions and clay minerals at 0.71 Ma suggest that a larger proportion of sediment was derived from the Yellow River after this time. We propose that the Yellow River has influenced the Bohai Sea since 1.9 Ma (or even earlier), which provides important evidence for an older Yellow River than 1.2 Ma. A significant increase in discharge of Yellow River sediments since 0.71 Ma is due to continuing subsidence of the eastern China coast, the large amplitude of Quaternary sea-level changes, and increased supply of eroded loess during the last 1.0 Ma. After this time, the contribution of local rivers surrounding the Bohai Sea became negligible due to dilution by the huge amounts of Yellow River sediments. Nearly half of the species in the large genus Saxifraga belong to Saxifraga sect. Ciliatae, a largely Sino-Himalayan taxon. We report here that evidence from chloroplast DNA sequences (psbA-trnH, trnL-F) and from nuclear sequences (ITS) indicates that this section is monophyletic and composed of at least three main lineages, corresponding to (1) a clade made up of species from S. subsect. Gemmiparae, subsect. Cinerascentes, subsect. Flagellares and subsect. Hemisphaericae, in which the last three subsections are nested in the first; (2) a clade of species belonging to S. subsect. Rosulares (including S. subsect. Serpyllifoliaef and (3) a clade of species belonging to S. subsect. Hirculoideae. Species relationships in S. subsect. Rosulares and subsect. Hirculoideae are not well resolved. A molecular clock analysis indicates that the diversification of S. sect. Ciliatae into its three lineages dates from ca. 9.48 Ma, coinciding with orogenic events associated with one of the most important phases of uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Extensive diversifications within S. subsect. Rosulares and subsect. Hirculoideae have been more recent (ca. 4.51 Ma and 2.12 Ma, respectively), again correlated with Qinghai-Tibet Plateau uplift events and, in the case of S. subsect. Hirculoideae, have occurred at a rate comparable to that seen in the radiation of Hawaiian fruit flies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Triassic turbidites dominate the Songpan–Ganzi–Bayan Har (SGBH) terrane of the northern Tibetan Plateau. U-Pb dating on single detrital zircon grains from the Triassic Bayan Har Group turbidites yield peaks at 400–500 m.y., 900–1000 m.y., 1800–1900 m.y., and 2400–2500 m.y., These results are consistent with recently published U-Pb zircon ages of pre-Triassic bedrock in the East Kunlun, Altyn, Qaidam, Qilian and Alaxa areas to the north, suggesting that provenance of the Bayan Har Group may include these rocks. The similarities in the compositions of the lithic arkosic sandstones of the Bayan Har Group with the sandstones of the Lower-Middle Triassic formations in the East Kunlun terrane to the north also suggests a common northern provenance for both. A well exposed angular unconformity between the Carboniferous–Middle Permian mélange sequences and the overlying Upper Permian or Triassic strata indicates that regional deformation occurred between the Middle and Late Permian. This deformation may have been the result of a soft collision between the Qiangtang terrane and the North China Plate and the closure of the Paleo-Tethyan oceanic basin. The Bayan Har Group turbidites were then deposited in a re-opened marine basin on a shelf environment. Fission-track dating of detrital zircons from the Bayan Har Group sandstones revealed pre- and post-depositional age components, suggesting that the temperatures did not reach the temperatures necessary to anneal retentive zircon fission tracks (250–300°C). A 282–292 m.y. peak age defined by low U concentration, retentive zircons likely reflects a northern granitic source. Euhedral zircons from two lithic arkoses with abundant volcanic fragments in the southern area yielded a ∼237 m.y. zircon fission track (ZFT) peak age, likely recording the maximum age of deposition. A dominant post-depositional 170–185 m.y. ZFT peak age suggests peak temperatures were reached in the Early Jurassic. Some samples appear to record a younger thermal event at ∼140 m.y., a short lived event that apparently affected only the least retentive zircons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
