In order to explore the glaciochemistry of Shiyi glacier in the central Qilian Mountains, a total of 142 samples have been collected for fresh snow, surface snow, snowpit and meltwater from July 2012 to November 2013. The results indicated cations dominated the glaciochemistry, especially the high Ca 2+ concentration. Relatively high Cl − and Na + concentrations were mainly contributed by desert dust aerosols and the atmospheric aerosols from warm water bodies such as the Black, Caspian, and Aral seas. The analysis also confirmed the chemical ions in fresh snow are mainly contributed by atmospheric wet deposition. Surface snow is mainly influenced by dry deposition, and snowpits are influenced by both atmospheric deposition and leaching process, while meltwater is influenced by water–rock interactions. The profile of ionic concentration in the snowpit became more smoothed during ablation period owing to the influence of leaching. The elution sequence of the snowpit in the Shiyi Glacier was: SO 4 2− > K + > Ca 2+ > Mg 2+ > Na + > Cl − > NO 3 − . The chemical concentrations for meltwater are mainly influenced by water dilution and soil thawing. The ions in snow in the central Qilian Mountains showed relatively lower concentrations than in the western Qilian Mountains, Tianshan Mountains and Altai Mountains. It was closer to balance than in glaciers in the central Tibetan Plateau, but was higher than in the southern Tibetan Plateau. Different ionic sources and dissolution process had caused the differences of chemical composition for fresh snow, surface snow, snowpit and meltwater, and these chemical compositions reflected the atmospheric background values in the northern Tibetan Plateau. Lithium isotopes have great potential to fractionate at subaerial environment, so they are promising proxies for tracing chemical weathering history. However, it remains uncertain how to relate lithium isotopic compositions (δ7Li) in sediments to silicate weathering and past climate in terrestrial setting. To tackle this question, we choose the warm and wet middle Miocene climate optimum (MMCO, 17–14 Ma) with large climate variation amplitude and the following cold and dry middle Miocene climate cooling period (MMCC, 14–11 Ma) with damped climatic variation amplitude, as two climate contrasting intervals to study lithium isotopes and content ([Li]) variations of terrestrial mudrocks. Our study site is located at the eastern Qaidam Basin of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau and the precipitation pattern of this part of the basin is similar to the Chinese Loess Plateau over the two studied intervals. The study site is suitable for clarifying link between climate and δ7Li variations because previous studies have demonstrated no provenance shift over the studied interval and short transport distance from source to the study site suggests little chemical weathering over the transportation process. Both δ7Li and [Li] values show larger amplitude over the MMCO (spanning from −1.2 to 3.2 ‰ and from 32.8 to 93.9 ug/g, respectively) than the MMCC interval (−1.8 to 1.2 ‰ and 41.7–80.8 ug/g, respectively), consistent with general feature of global and Chinese Loess Plateau climate. However, δ7Li data are higher over the MMCO in comparison with the MMCC, contrary to expectation of more lithium isotope fractionation at warm interval. We interpret the more positive δ7Li values over the MMCO using increased ratio of primary mineral dissolution over secondary mineral precipitation. Qaidam mudrock and benthic Li records show complementary changes, suggesting their possible link. Furthermore, past research reveals lack of focused uplift of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau over the studied 18–11 Ma. So we conclude that global climate, rather than Tibetan uplift, played an important role in modulating inland Qaidam Basin climate variations over the middle Miocene and that increased chemical weathering over warm climate can lead to a small magnitude of lithium isotope fractionation. Therefore, interpreting chemical weathering history, and hence climate, using lithium isotope data in terrestrial setting requires considering relative importance of primary mineral dissolution versus secondary mineral precipitation. The spatiotemporal distribution of soil moisture over the Tibetan Plateau is important for understanding the regional water cycle and climate change. In this paper, the surface soil moisture in the northeastern Tibetan Plateau is estimated from time-series VV-polarized Sentinel-1A observations by coupling the water cloud model (WCM) and the advanced integral equation model (AIEM). The vegetation indicator in the WCM is represented by the leaf area index (LAI), which is smoothed and interpolated from Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LAI eight-day products. The AIEM requires accurate roughness parameters, which are parameterized by the effective roughness parameters. The first halves of the Sentinel-1A observations from October 2014 to May 2016 are adopted for the model calibration. The calibration results show that the backscattering coefficient (σº) simulated from the coupled model are consistent with those of the Sentinel-1A with integrated Pearson's correlation coefficients R of 0.80 and 0.92 for the ascending and descending data, respectively. The variability of soil moisture is correctly modeled by the coupled model. Based on the calibrated model, the soil moisture is retrieved using a look-up table method. The results show that the trends of the in situ soil moisture are effectively captured by the retrieved soil moisture with an integrated R of 0.60 and 0.82 for the ascending and descending data, respectively. The integrated bias, mean absolute error, and root mean square error are 0.006, 0.048, and 0.073 m3/m3 for the ascending data, and are 0.012, 0.026, and 0.055 m3/m3 for the descending data, respectively. Discussions of the effective roughness parameters and uncertainties in the LAI demonstrate the importance of accurate parameterizations of the surface roughness parameters and vegetation for the soil moisture retrieval. These results demonstrate the capability and reliability of Sentinel-1A data for estimating the soil moisture over the Tibetan Plateau. In recent years, rapid global warming has led to a dramatic cryosphere retreat and caused environmental disasters on the Tibetan Plateau (TP). To better understand the near-surface air temperature variation on the TP in response to global warming in the 21st century, we systematically detected temperature changes on the TP relative to global warming regarding warming time, warming amplitude, and elevation-dependent warming (EDW) using the multi-model ensemble (MME) means of 24 CMIP6 models. The results showed that the warming rate on the TP is 1.3–1.45 times more than that of mean global warming from 2015 to 2100, with the TP having already warmed by 1.5 °C above the pre-industrial levels in 2016/2015 and will warm by 2 °C by 2028/2027 under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway (SSP) scenarios, SSP2–4.5 and SSP5–8.5. In addition, the warming amplitude on the TP in response to global warming levels of 1.5 and 2 °C would be 1.97 and 2.69 °C under the SSP2–4.5 scenario and 1.94 and 2.68 °C under the SSP5–8.5 scenario. Furthermore, EDW amplifies the warming amplitude at high elevations, mainly because of the decrease in surface albedo. The most sensitive warming amplitude in the cryosphere region, with an elevation of 5–5.5 km, would exceed 2.06, 2.79, 4.29, and 5.73 °C when global warming reaches 1.5, 2, 3, and 4 °C under the SSP5–8.5 scenario. This additional 0.56–1.73 °C warming in the high elevation relative to the global mean will intensify the cryosphere ablation on the TP. Thus, considering the projected larger warming trend and amplitude, the high-elevation region on the TP would be particularly sensitive and vulnerable, which is unfavorable for the TP from the perspective of the Paris Agreement warming target. • Temperature changes on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are sensitive to global warming. • The warming rate of the TP is 1.3–1.45 times greater than the global mean during 2015–2100. • The TP has warmed by 1.5 °C in 2016 and will warm by 2 °C in 2028 under the SSP2–4.5. • The EDW phenomenon will continue to amplify the warming amplitude at high elevations. • As global warming reaches 2.0 °C, the mean warming over TP could be 2.7 °C, which would cause disastrous effects on the cryosphere.
