The article considers the preservation of Islamic and other historical manuscripts in Timbuktu, Mali by Abdel Kader Haidara, an official of the Ahmed Baba Institute in that city, following its 2012 takeover by Ansar Dine, an extremist Islamic insurgent militia which destroyed historic buildings and artifacts for religious reasons. Haidara's efforts in first hiding the manuscripts within the city and then smuggling them to parts of Mali not controlled by the insurgents are examined. The role of Haidara's accomplice Stephanie Diakité in organizing the smuggling to the manuscripts from Timbuktu to Bamako, Mali is discussed.
