Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of postoperative ptosis after primary trabeculectomy and the possible factors contributing to ptosis. Materials and Methods: A total of 312 patients (339 eyes) who underwent trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C between 2015 and 2020 were retrospectively evaluated. Patients who had regular follow-up for at least 6 months and no history of ptosis or ptosis surgery were included. Age, sex, glaucoma type, preoperative and postoperative intraocular pressure, preoperative and postoperative antiglaucoma medications, number of antiglaucoma drops, duration of antiglaucoma medication use, history of eye itching due to antiglaucoma medication-associated allergy, duration of follow-up, postoperative needling, needling time, and ocular massage were recorded. Ptosis was defined as >2 mm reduction in margin-reflex distance 1 from preoperative levels. Ptosis that had not improved for at least 6 months was considered persistent ptosis. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine potential predictors of ptosis development. Results: Ptosis after trabeculectomy was observed in 35 of 339 eyes (10.3%). Thirty eyes of 30 patients (8.8%) had transient ptosis and 5 eyes of 4 patients (1.5%) had persistent ptosis. Preoperative duration of antiglaucoma medication use, drug(s) used (prostaglandin analogs, beta-blockers, alpha-2 agonists, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, or combinations of these), needling time, and ocular massage after trabeculectomy did not differ significantly between groups (p>0.05). Needling and eye itching due to antiglaucoma medication-associated allergy were significantly higher in patients with ptosis (p<0.05). Conclusion: Ptosis after trabeculectomy is an important problem for glaucoma patients. It has been observed that needling and a history of eye itching due to antiglaucoma drug-associated allergy may increase the risk of ptosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ethnopharmacological relevance Many of the currently available antidepressants have serious adverse effects and are also expensive. Traditional medicines are major sources of original drugs, and their role in effective treatment is remarkable. In Turkish folk medicine, decoctions and infusions are prepared from the flowers of Anthemis wiedemanniana Fisch. & Mey. They exert antispasmodic and sedative effects and are also used for treating urinary inflammations. The present study was designed to evaluate the antidepressant activity of A. wiedemanniana , which is used against central nervous system disorders in Turkish folk medicine. Materials and methods n -Hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol (MeOH) extracts were prepared from the flowers of the plant. The antidepressant potentials of these extracts were evaluated in mouse models using the forced swimming test, tail suspension test, and antagonism of tetrabenazine-induced ptosis, hypothermia, and suppression of locomotor activity. The results were compared with those in control and reference groups, and active constituents of the plant were determined. The MeOH extract of A. wiedemanniana was subjected to various chromatographic separation techniques, leading to the isolation and identification of the active component(s). Results After confirmation of the antidepressant activity, the MeOH extract was subjected to successive solvent partitioning using solvents of increasing polarity, yielding four subextracts. Each subextract was tested on the same biological activity models. Fraction B was found to have the highest activity and subjected to further chromatographic separation. Isolated germacronolide-type sesquiterpene lactones were elucidated as tatridin A (1) and tanachin (1-epi-tatridin B) (2) , which were responsible for the antidepressant activity of the flowers. Conclusions This study explored the antidepressant potential of A. wiedemanniana. Using bioassay-guided fractionation and isolation techniques, tatridin A and tanachin (1-epi-tatridin B) were determined as the main active components of the flowers. Further antidepressant mechanistic studies should be conducted for exploring the activity of these compounds against depression. Purpose : Demodex folliculorum (DF), which is frequently found in patients with chronic blepharitis, is a well-known common inhabitant of eyelash follicles. In the present study, the prevalence of DF in seborrheic blepharitis patients and controls was investigated. In addition, the associations between the presence of DF and host factors (age, sex) were analyzed. Methods : A prospective, cross-sectional study was done involving 500 cases. In all, 6000 cilia from 170 patients with seborrheic blepharitis and 330 patients with normal eyes were examined for DF. Twelve eyelash samples were epilated from each patient and examined under the light microscope. Results : DF was found in 28.8% (49/170) of patients with blepharitis and in 26.7% (88/330) of controls. The difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. The overall prevalence was 27.4% (137/500) in all patients. Although the prevalence of DF increased with increasing age, no significant difference was found between the age groups. There was also no statistically significant difference for DF prevalence between males (28.9%; 71/246) and females (24.1%; 61/254). Conclusion : Our findings show a high DF prevalence in both blepharitis and control patients and no relationship was found between the presence of DF and host factors (age, sex).
