Objective: Pseudophoxinus battalgilae is one of two species with the widest distribution of the genus in the Central and Southern Anatolia (Manavgat River) regions, the other being Pseudophoxinus firati. The species description was made based on samples from the Beyşehir Lake basin. Records are found from Suğla Lake (Seydişehir); the Akgöl (Ereğli) drainage canals; and the Zengen (Ereğli) and Ilgın (springs and small streams flowing into Çavuşçu Lake); the Kızılca, Akkaya, and Gümüşler reservoirs (Niğde), and the Manavgat River basin. This study attempts to identify new recorded localities of P. battalgilae and determines their general distribution areas. In parallel with this, an attempt has been made to evaluate the current state of the species' habitats. Materials and Methods: Pseudophoxinus battalgilae specimens were caught from Gödet Stream (Karaman) with an electrical shock device, with most being released back into the habitat. The metric and meristic characters of the samples were determined. A maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree was created with closely related species and a haplotype network analysis was applied. Results: The study records the species to have also spread to the Gödet Stream in the Central Anatolia region, thus contributing to identifying the population number and distribution area of the species. The maximum genetic distance of the P. battalgilae populations was determined as 0.0061 between Gödet Stream and the Aşıklar (Ereğli) canal populations. In addition to the phylogenetic analysis, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) results confirm the Gödet Stream population to belong to the P. battalgilae species. Conclusion: As a result, the evaluations in the study show a total of eight populations of the species to have been found. However, many populations of the species are expected to disappear in a short time due to drought and to domestic and agricultural pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While many studies examine Erdoğan's growing control over the Turkish media sector, there are hardly any studies that look at how post-truth affects the low-income urban consumers of partisan media in Turkey, which this article aims to do. This focus group study reveals that the partisan media has a significant impact on the views and behaviour of the relatively less educated urban poor, but personal experiences prove a significant factor in the success of post-truth politics. If interviewees are locked into a relation of interest with Justice and Development Party organizations, particularly if they are recipients of social aid, their loyalty to Erdoğan and inclination to believe fake news from partisan media are stronger. However, when their personal experiences are diametrically different from the claims made in fake news, these individuals are harder to be persuaded by partisan media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The World Health Organization has been emphasizing the importance of active, healthy, and productive aging due to emerging demographic changes. This study was carried out to measure the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Education Participation Scale-A (EPS-A). This methodological study was performed between June 2020 and August 2020 in Turkey. The sample size was determined as 384 individuals by taking the power limit of 0.80. The Snowball sampling method was used in the research. SPSS 26.0 and AMOS-26 programs were used in the validity and reliability analysis of the data. A level of significance of p ≤.05 was used for all data analyses. The mean age of the participants in the study was 66.96 ± 5.809. About 40.1% of participants were college/university graduates. According to exploratory factor analysis, the scale showed a four-factor structure. The total variance explained was calculated as 67.493%. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the model was statistically significant and valid (χ2/df = 4.53). The Cronbach's alpha value of the subdimensions of the scale ranged between 0.90 and 0.94, and 0.96 for the general scale. The Education Participation Scale-A(EPS-A) is a valid 30-item scale with 4 subdimensions for Turkish society and can be used reliably to determine the motivation to participate in learning among individuals aged 60 or over. Rather than addressing the Kurdish conflict in Turkey directly, this study focuses on how the rising nationalist populism bears on Kurdish voters supporting the pro‐Kurdish party HDP. There are very few studies on how Kurds are affected by the nationalist populism often expressed in Turkey by the governing People's Alliance (Cumhur İttifakı) with its slogan "domestic and national," even though the literature offers a broad variety of studies on the Kurdish conflict. To fill this gap, this study is supported by focus group discussions with the Kurds in Turkey who support the HDP, based on a sample of the Kurds living in Istanbul, which is sometimes referred to as the "largest Kurdish city." This study claims that the populist slogan of the "domestic and national" not only marginalises the Kurdish interviewees but also weakens their sense of belonging to Turkey, thus encouraging them to establish their own national identities. An important result of the focus group meetings is that AKP's polarising policy not only causes polarisation among Turks but also among the Kurds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) associated pneumonia that emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and was later declared by the World Health Organization to be a pandemic has called coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). Our study aims to determine the anxiety levels, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms levels and psychiatric symptoms of healthcare workers working at pandemic hospital and effects of these symptoms on psychological adjustment to healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey. Methods: This study was cross-sectional survey study and conducted between March 2020-June 2020 with 973 consenting participants working at the pandemic hospital. For the study, we used an online questionnaire, which consisted of three parts: an online-informed consent, basic sociodemographic information and a set of online questions. The data were collected by the researchers. All procedures were approved by our hospital's Ethics Committee. Traumatic Stress Symptom Scale (TSSS) was used for the study. Results: Nine hundred and seventy-three persons participated in the study. Among the three groups, nurses also had the highest fear of dying during the COVID-19 pandemic (p<0.001); the highest feelings of hopelessness about the future during the COVID-19 pandemic (p<0.001); the highest increase in level of anxiety (p<0.001), and the highest experience of recent sleep disturbances (p<0.001). Women had a statistically significantly higher mean TSSS score and mean TSSS score of participants with doctors or medical specialization was lower than participants with other levels of education (p<0.001). Conclusion: Although the rate of PTSD was significantly higher in nurses in our study, PTSD was also seen in the other two groups. Indeed, it was much higher in people working in environments at high risk for COVID-19 than in the other groups. This may be the consequence of nurses' having greater exposure to COVID19-infected patients. This situation may be related to long working hours, inadequate rest and burnout. We recommend that healthcare workers work in the shift. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HISTORICAL source material , *COPYING , *MANUSCRIPTS , *BIOGRAPHY (Literary form) , *SCHOLARS ,QUR'ANIC criticism - Abstract
Manuscripts can function as historical documents in terms of the intertextual and extratextual information they contain, and they can be instrumental in this way in enlightening the biography of those involved in the physical circulation of a certain copy of a text. This article is an important example of this as it deals with the scholar Badr al-Rūmī. The article evaluates his biblio-biographic information with regard to certain manuscripts. In this context, the article analyzes the information given in the farāgh records of three manuscripts al-Rūmī copied, two in the field of jurisprudence and one in the field of tafsir. The information in the two ijāzat documents were given to him at the end of a copy of al-Kashshāf and in the preamble of the abridged commentary Badr al-Rūmī wrote on al-Pazdawī’s Uṣūl. The article contextually evaluates this information on al-Rūmī using other biblio-biographic information, in an attempt to understand the meaning of this information in the general framework of the period in which he lived. The article not only highlights awareness of scholars of the Beyliks period such as Badr al-Rūmī but also presents in the case of Badr al-Rūmī at least a meaningful picture of the relationship of the Anatolian Beyliks period’s scholarly tradition with the scholarly centers beyond Anatolia. Infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is a highly contagious disease of young salmonid fish and is one of the most severe economic diseases in aquaculture. In Turkey, an increase in infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) outbreaks in freshwater rainbow trout have been reported in recent years. This study aimed to analyze the VP2 gene from recent IPNV isolates from Turkey to determine whether there are epidemiological links between IPNV isolates from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss; 62) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax; 1), wild turbot (Scophthalmus maximus; 1) and the environment in order to investigate potential wild and farmed fish interactions. In this study, 62 Turkish IPNV isolates collected over 10 years (2005–2014) from rainbow trout, sea bass and turbot were genotypically characterized. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that Turkish IPNV isolates are closely related to strains from Denmark, Iran and Spain and that all Turkish IPNV isolates belong to genogroup V, serotype A2 (Sp strain). Furthermore, low genetic diversity was found among the Turkish isolates (identity, 95.5%–100% nucleotides and 97.8%–100% amino acids). The result of the analysis of the amino acid residues found at positions 217, 221 and 247 (proline, threonine and alanine, respectively) could be associated with virulence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurocutaneous disorder that results in a predisposition to the growth of multiple tumors in the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, and the skin. The clinical manifestations of neurofibromatosis are associated with loss of neurofibromin expression which causes the upregulation of the RAS pathway. Although neurofibromatosis type 1 can be diagnosed based on the National Institutes of Health criteria, sometimes the diagnosis is difficult, in cases where the characteristic features do not develop. Moreover, other RAS-related disorders may present with significantly overlapping clinical features. Aims: To determine the clinical and molecular genetic characteristics of Turkish patients with neurofibromatosis type 1. Study design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: For the genetic analysis of 27 Turkish families clinically diagnosed with NF1 between 1990 and 2019, we used a multi-step process consisting of next-generation sequencing, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification, and array-comparative genomic hybridization. Results: In this study, we identified 11 novel and 11 previously reported single-nucleotide variants in 22 families. Whole gene deletions were detected by multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification analysis in 3 families. Of those, array comparative genomic hybridization analysis defined a 17q11.2 deletion in 4 patients from 2 families and 1.2-Mb involving 1 unrelated patient. All patients with a deletion had facial dysmorphism, suggesting a peculiar phenotype in this group. We could not find any pathogenic variant in the 2 families that met the National Institutes of Health criteria. Conclusion: The novel pathogenic variants identified in this study broaden the spectrum of pathogenic variants in NF1 and provide better clinical characterization of NF1. RNA-seq experiments are recommended in patients who meet the National Institutes of Health diagnostic criteria for NF but have not identified any variants in nextgeneration sequencing, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification, or array-comparative genomic hybridization analysis. Avalanche is a rapid flow of snow down of a slope, such as a mountain or a hill. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the traumas of the victims who were hospitalized in two avalanche disasters that occurred in Van province, Turkey on February 4 and 5, 2020. On February 4-5, 2020, two avalanche disasters occurred in Van province, Turkey. The data of all victims were gathered from hospital records and register of Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Turkey retrospectively. Victims who were treated and died in the avalanche area were excluded from the study. At two avalanches, 126 victims were affected. The mean age of the hospitalized victims (50 victims) was 36.84±10.70 (18 - 61), 48 were male. 15 victims were affected (8 alive, 7 death) at the first avalanche, while 111 were affected (76 alive, 35 death) at the second avalanche. The burial time was nearly 90 minutes in the first avalanche and 30 minutes in the second avalanche. The most common pathology was scalp laceration in 12 (24%) victims. 46 (92%) victims were treated with medical treatment. The overall mortality of two avalanches was 33.3%, while the mortality rate of the first avalanches was 46.7%. No complications or mortality occurred in any patient admitted to the hospital. Avalanche disaster is a serious problem and requires early access to the area to shorten the burial time. Early access provides early intervention. Early intervention was delayed due to weather conditions and mortality rates increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We aimed to report our experiences about the appendiceal carcinoid tumor (ACT) detected incidentally in patients who operated with the diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA). A case series analyses from historical patients who had undergone elective and emergency appendectomies from January 2015 to August 2019 and registered on accrual and for whom histopathological records were well preserved have been analyzed. Those cases with histopathologically proven ACT were extracted, and demographics, clinicopathological characteristics, treatment modalities, and follow-up results were evaluated. Among the 2415 appendectomy specimens, 14 carcinoid tumors were detected (0.58%), 9 being male and 5 female patients, with a mean age of 31.5 years (21–72). The clinical presentation was AA in all cases. In twelve patients, appendectomy was sufficient, but complementary right hemicolectomy was needed in the remaining two cases. The size of the tumor was less than 1 cm in 12 (86%), and the median tumor size was 0.62 (range, 0.2–1.7). Tumor localization was an appendiceal apex in 10 (71%), midportion in 3 (21%), and base in 1 (7%). There was no need for any adjuvant therapy. During the mean follow-up time of 36.6 months (range, 24–46), all patients were disease-free and alive. An ACT is generally diagnosed incidentally with the histopathological analysis in patients undergoing surgery for suspected AA. This emphasizes the value of the histopathological analysis of every removed appendix. The long-term prognosis of incidentally found ACT is good. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Barbus xanthos, a new species, is described from the Eşen, Dalaman, Tersakan and Büyük Menderes rivers in south‐western Anatolia. It differs from other Barbus species in the adjacent basins by having 53–60 lateral line scales, a weakly ossified last unbranched dorsal‐fin ray (about 33–50%), numerous small irregular‐shaped black or dark‐brown spots smaller than scales, often forming large, black or dark‐brown blotches on back and flank in juveniles and adults, and a straight or slightly convex posterior dorsal‐fin margin. B. xanthos differs from its most closely related congener, B. pergamonensis, by nine nucleotide substitution sites in the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I barcode region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Golden Horn Estuary, Istanbul, Turkey, had been exposed to untreated industrial discharges and municipal wastewater for over fifty years; however, during the last fifteen years pollution has been reduced due to an extensive rehabilitation campaign. Since sediment is the main accumulation matrix of marine ecosystems, surface sediment samples were collected from the estuary and analyzed for concentrations of some elements and radioactivity. The elements of predominant anthropogenic origin such as As, Cu, Pb, Sb, Sn and Zn and
137 Cs were observed in the mid-estuary. Also, elevated geoaccumulation indices for Ag, Cd, Cu and Sb showed that pollution was still occurring in the estuary despite the rehabilitation. There is a huge residential area near the estuary; therefore, people living in this area are affected due to the pollution of the estuary. Thus, the obtained data of the elements and radionuclides are very important for the ecosystem of the Golden Horn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Abstract: Aim: We aimed to define the normal values of second‐trimester fetal prenasal thickness and nasal bone length ratio (PNT/NBL) in a low‐risk Turkish population and investigate the relationship between the increased PNT and nuchal fold (NF). Method: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 650 cases considered to be euploid fetuses who presented to our clinic between December 2013 and September 2014 for a second‐line ultrasound between 17 and 24 weeks. Their PNT, NBL, NF and biometric (BPD, HC, AC, FL and HL) measurements were recorded. Results: A total of 650 cases considered to be euploid fetuses were included in this study. There was a linear increase in PNT with the gestational weeks (mean value 3.01 at weeks 17–18 and 3.76 at weeks 23–24). The PNT/NB ratio showed a slight decrease in advancing gestational weeks (mean value 0.57 at weeks 17–18 and 0.50 at weeks 23–24). The 95th percentile value of the PNT/NB ratio, independent of the gestational week, was 0.76. The values of both PNT and NF increased with advancing gestational weeks, but there was no statistically linear increase between PNT and NF (R2: 0.115). Conclusion: In this study, we provided a nomogram of the PNT/NB ratio. Both NF thickness and PNT should be dealt with as two separate markers. Although the formation mechanisms are thought to be the same in both of them, a strong linear relationship does not exist between them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MAGNESIUM sulfate ,ASTHMA ,DISEASE exacerbation ,CLINICAL immunology - Abstract
Background: Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) is considered to be a well-tolerated, inexpensive, and effective medication for severe asthma exacerbations. We surveyed physicians who treat patients with asthma to evaluate the current knowledge and usage of MgSO4.Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was e-mailed to members of the Turkish National Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and was distributed to participants of its annual congress. Results: Of the 456 respondents (mean age: 36.53 ± 9.11 years), 42.3% reported to use MgSO4in asthma exacerbations in their practice, and 48.7% agreed that MgSO4was included in asthma guidelines. The best known indication was that it was useful only in patients refractory to bronchodilators and systemic corticosteroids (67.7%). The two most common reasons to use MgSO4were to shorten hospital stay (94.7%), and prevent admission to intensive care unit (80.3%). The respondents mostly used MgSO4in the treatment of severe or life-threatening exacerbations. Thirty-nine percent believed that MgSO4had no effect on discharge period, and 29% of them marked minor side effects. The most common reason for not using MgSO4was inexperience (36.5%). Having an academic affiliation (OR = 3.20,p < 0.001), the number of asthmatic outpatients seen per month (OR = 1.82,p = 0.007), and more recent graduation from medical school (≤1991) (OR = 0.23,p < 0.001) were associated with the use of MgSO4in the multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Even though the effect of MgSO4in acute severe asthma is well known, only half of the physicians dealing with asthma patients have used it in their practice. Education and encouragement in this regard are necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Metallic foreign body (MFB) ingestion is a common problem in the pediatric population. Morbidity and mortality rates are low in foreign body ingestion during childhood, but it may lead to anxiety in parents. Materials and Methods: We aimed to analyze the clinical presentation, etiology, and management of MFB ingestion. The records of children admitted with a history of MFB ingestion were retrospectively reviewed. Data regarding gender, age, type of foreign body, management, and outcome (outcomes) were recorded. Results: Of the 151 children included, 67 (44.4%) were male and 84 (55.6%) female. The mean age was 49.3±39.2 months. Coins, in 108 patients (71.5%), were the most commonly ingested foreign bodies, followed by batteries in 19 patients (12.6%), and other metallic objects. The foreign bodies were located in the esophagus in 70 (46.4%) patients, the stomach in 29 (19.2%), and the small intestine in 52 (34.4%). Endoscopic interventions were performed in 69 patients (45.6%). One patient who swallowed a battery was operated because of acute abdomen. Conclusion: MFB ingestion may appear as an emergency condition of a preventable cause in domestic accidents. It must not be forgotten that in addition to protective measures, early intervention in the emergency department is a significant factor in reducing mortality associated with this condition. Aim The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the relation between perinatal complications in twin pregnancies and the combination of first-trimester maternal serum pregnancy-associated plasma protein- A ( PAPP- A) and free beta-human chorionic gonadotrophin (β- hCG) levels. Material and Methods The study was conducted at the Perinatology Department of Baskent University between January 2005 and December 2011. In total, 104 patients with twin pregnancies were recruited. The association of first-trimester maternal serum-screening markers with perinatal complications was investigated for small-for-gestational-age ( SGA) fetuses or intrauterine growth restriction ( IUGR), preterm delivery (before 34 weeks of gestation), pregnancy-induced hypertension ( PIH), and growth discordance between fetuses. Results Low serum PAPP- A (below 10th percentile) levels were not correlated with preterm labor, PIH, or IUGR in twin gestations. Elevated free β- hCG levels (>90th percentile) were linked to increased rates of PIH and small-for-gestational-age fetuses or IUGR. Conclusion Elevated first-trimester free β- hCG was related to adverse pregnancy outcomes in twin pregnancies, whereas low PAPP- A levels were not linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes. STREAMFLOW ,MULTIVARIATE analysis ,PRINCIPAL components analysis ,FACTOR analysis - Abstract
Homogeneous streamflow regions in Turkey were identified using a multivariate statistical tool; namely, principal components analysis (PCA) with a varimax orthogonal rotation. The rotated PCA was applied to monthly streamflow records of 78 gauging stations during the period 1964-1994. The first seven rotated components were found significant at the 0.05 or lower levels. All accounted for 68% of the total variance of the original data assembly. The different groups of highly intercorrelated streams were defined by the patterns of map drawn for the rotated components loadings. Furthermore, an annual cycle analysis was applied to the same monthly streamflow data. Harmonic vectors extracted from a series of 12 monthly means at each station were marked over a map to readily keep track of streamflow seasonal variations across the study domain. The basic statistical characteristics of streamflow were also investigated within the identified regions; thus, some similarities and dissimilarities between the regions were documented. The identified streamflow regions were shown to be consistent with climate zones in Turkey defined by a recent study based on cluster analysis of temperature and precipitation data. HYDROLOGIC cycle , *WATER quality , *GEOLOGICAL basins - Abstract
This paper presents trends computed for the 31-year period of monthly streamflows obtained from 26 basins over Turkey. Four non-parametric trend tests (the Sen''s T, the Spearman''s Rho, the Mann-Kendall, and the Seasonal Kendall which are known as appropriate tools in detecting linear trends of a hydrological time series) are adapted in this study. Moreover, the Van Belle and Hughes’ basin wide trend test is included in the analysis for the same purpose. Homogeneity of trends in monthly streamflows is also tested using a procedure developed by Van Belle and Hughes. Thus, this study includes a complete application of both the Van Belle and Hughes’ tests for homogeneity of trends and basin wide trend (originally developed for trend detection in water quality data) on a hydroclimatic variable. As a result, basins located in western Turkey, in general, exhibit downward trend, significant at the 0.05 or lower level, whereas basins located in eastern Turkey show no trend. In most cases, the first four tests provide the same conclusion about trend existence. Use of the Seasonal Kendall, which involves a single overall statistic rather than one statistic for each season, is justified by the homogeneity of trend test. Moreover, some basins located in southern Turkey exhibit a global trend, implying the homogeneity of trends in seasons and stations together, based on the Van Belle and Hughes’ basin wide trend test. We investigated the presence of carbapenemases in carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates, which were collected over a 14-month period in a Turkish hospital, with in-depth molecular characterization of carbapenemase-producing isolates. Among 45 study isolates, 2 isolates were identified as carbapenemase producers by both Carba NP and Carbapenem Inactivation Method tests, and only 1 of them gave a positive result in polymerase chain reaction tests for a carbapenemase gene (bla VIM). Whole genome sequencing of the 2 isolates revealed the presence of bla VIM-5 gene in an ST308 isolate, while the other one expressed IMP-7 in an ST357 isolate; both STs are considered high-risk clones. The 2 carbapenemase-producing isolates were multidrug resistant, as they harbored other resistance determinants, including a variant of the recently described plasmid-encoded fluoroquinolone resistance determinant crpP gene, crpP-2. We report for the first time P. aeruginosa high-risk clones carrying VIM-5– and IMP-7–type carbapenemases with multiple resistance determinants in Turkey. • Twenty percent carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates over a 14-month period in a Turkish hospital. • Among carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates, 5% were carbapenemase producers. • Carbapenemase-producing P. aeruginosa high-risk clones from Turkey. • VIM-5–producing ST308 and IMP-7–producing ST357. • Novel plasmid-encoded fluoroquinolone resistance determinant crpP gene, crpP-2. The taxonomic status of the Oxynoemacheilus from the Karınca and Havran streams in the north Aegean Basin was evaluated, and it was concluded that these populations contain a new species. The new species, Oxynoemacheilus kottelati sp. nov., is distinguished by a body with a marbled pattern, a deeper caudal peduncle, a shorter caudal peduncle, a wider interorbital distance, and a shorter middle caudal-fin lope. Oxynoemacheilus kottelati sp. nov. is differentiated from the closest species, O. marmaraensis, in possessing 51 nucleotide substitution sites, a genetic distance of 8.40%, the presence of an axillary lobe at the base of the pelvic fin (vs. absent), and a narrower median incision in the upper lip (vs. absent). Three species delimitation tests (ASAP, ABGD, and PTP) and phylogenetic analyses reinforce the validity of O. kottelati sp. nov. as a distinct species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Trace element composition of atmospheric particles collected at a high altitude site on the Eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey was investigated to understand atmospheric transport of pollutants to this semi-closed basin. Aerosol samples were collected at a timber-storage area, which is operated by the General Directorate of Forestry. The site is situated at a rural area and is approximately 50km to the Black Sea coast and 200km to the Georgia border of Turkey. Coarse (PM2.5–10) and fine (PM2.5) aerosol samples were collected between 2011 and 2013 using a “stacked filter unit”. Collected samples were shipped to the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, where Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ba, Pb were measured by Energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence technique (EDXRF). Comparison of measured concentrations of elements with corresponding data generated at other parts of Turkey demonstrated that concentrations of pollution derived elements are higher at Eastern Black Sea than their corresponding concentrations measured at other parts of Turkey, which is attributed to frequent transport of pollutants from north wind sector. Positive matric factorization revealed four factors including three anthropogenic and a crustal factor. Southeastern parts of Turkey, Georgia and Black Sea coast of Ukraine were identified as source regions affecting composition of particles at our site, using trajectory statistics, namely “potential source contribution function” (PSCF). Aim: The aim of this prospective, randomised, single-blind, single center, parallel group study was to compare the analgesic effects and safety of a single starting dose of soluble ibuprofen and 2 g of intravenous paracetamol for postoperative pain management in patients undergoing surgical removal of lower impacted third molar. Method: 30 patients who referred for surgical removal of bilateral impacted lower third molar teeth were included in the study. The patients were divided in to two groups. In the early preoperative period, the patients received a single starting dose of either soluble ibuprofen 400 mg dissolved in 100 ml of water or 15-min intravenous infusion of paracetamol 2 gram. Surgery in each patient was performed twice, 1 impacted tooth was being removed at a time and another one was being removed 2 weeks later. Trismus, safety variables and hepatotoxicity and analgesic efficacy were evaluated. Result: The analgesic efficacy over a 24-hour period was of statistically no significant difference between 2 groups but clinical data shows that the analgesic efficacy of paracetamol group was greater than ibuprofen group. As for the mean trismus values, there was no statistically significant difference between groups. The administered dosages of the analgesics did not lead to hepatocellular injury and biochemical abnormality. Conclusion: Consequently, both administered dosages of drugs can safely be used as a single starting doses. In order to obtain more better results with analgesic efficacy and safety in use, more trials are needed for administering higher doses of paracetamol and ibuprofen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Eflatunpinar monument is located about 25km at the North of Beysehir (Konya–Turkey). The monument which belongs to Hittite Empire Age was known since xix century and there are several papers written on this monument in the literature. The monument which is 7.02m wide and 3.6m high was built of large tracit block stones. Latest excavation carried out by Konya''s Archeology Museum in 1996 showed that the monument was built with some other parts and surrounded by a water channel. These results have pushed the scientist into a discussion – as it has usually been done intensively several times in the past – on environmental arrangements surrounding the monument. Hittite scripts brought to light implicate that monument surrounded by trees and prohibited someone to cut these trees off by law. Archaeological studies done on Eflatunpinar monument were carried out by classical techniques. Therefore, those studies were limited by capabilities of classical techniques and were not able to present more than plan and some cross-sections. By this study, it is made a modern approach which is alternative to classical technique and using a digital and virtual environment provided by computer technology. As a result of this study, all measurements can easily be collected by the help of this 3D virtual model of the monument with no need to be on the site at any time they are required. Complete 3D model will also provide a numerical evaluation, interpretation and several analyses on monument together with its environment and surroundings. This 3D virtual model approach will bring a novelty into Hittite archeology. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

- Abstract
Objective: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a complex developmental anomaly caused by abnormal aortic leaflet formation during valvulogenesis. The present study is an assessment of the effects of BAV disease on the ascending aorta and pulmonary artery (PA), and an evaluation of the consequences for systolic and diastolic functioning of the left and right ventricles., Methods: Total of 66 patients were eligible for inclusion. Pulmonary artery maximum diameter (PAD) was obtained 1 cm distal to the pulmonary annulus. Using pulsed-wave tissue Doppler imaging, left ventricular (LV) early diastolic velocity (E') measurement was obtained at the annulus with placement of sample volume. Right ventricle (RV) peak global strain rate during systole (RV-SRS), early diastole (RV-SRE), and late diastole (RV-SRA) were calculated., Results: In this study, 40.9% (n=27) of patients were female and average age was 35±11years. RV-SRS values (ß=-.781, t=-2.723; p=0.010) and log-LV tissue Doppler imaging E' (ß=-2.996, t=-5.405; p=<0.001) were negatively correlated, and log-PAD (ß=4.861, t=3.052; p=0.005) was positively and independently correlated with ascending aortic diameter., Conclusion: Ascending aorta diameter is positively correlated with PA diameter in BAV patients, and RV strain rate and LV diastolic parameters are affected before development of the valve disease.

- Abstract
Objectives: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an increasingly important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Pericardial effusion (PE) is a current issue proven to be a mortality predictor, especially in pulmonary arterial hypertension. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of PE in COPD., Study Design: The study cohort consisted of 488 COPD patients and a control group of 50 healthy patients. At the start of the study, 37 patients (7.5%) had PE. Mean follow-up time was 12 months (range; 1-16 months). Clinical spirometric and echocardiographic data were compared between patients with PE(+) group (n=37), patients without PE(-) group (n=451) and the healthy control group., Results: Right ventricular functions were more depressed and pulmonary arterial pressure was more elevated in the PE(+) group. Also, Kaplan-Meier survival curve analysis showed that at one-year follow- up, mortality was higher in the PE(+) group: PE(-) group 139 (30.8%), PE(+) group 21 (56.8%) log-Rank p value: 0.009). Age, presence of PE, and oxygen usage were independent predictors of mortality in Cox regression analysis., Conclusion: Presence of PE predicts mortality in COPD patients at one-year follow-up.

- Abstract
Stent thrombosis remains an unresolved problem despite advances in coronary revascularization. Incomplete stent apposition (malapposition) and incomplete endothelialization of stent struts, which is more commonly seen with drug-eluting stents, are the primary causes of late or very late stent thrombosis. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a novel modality for imaging of these potentially fatal conditions. Coronary angiography performed for non-ST elevation myocardial infarction in a 60-year-old male patient with a three-year history of sirolimus-eluting stent implantation to the left anterior descending coronary artery showed stent thrombosis. In addition to his regular aspirin and clopidogrel therapy, heparin and tirofiban infusions were started. Repeat coronary angiography five days later showed nearly complete disappearance of the thrombus. Further examination with OCT to evaluate stent malapposition and endothelialization revealed separation of stent struts from the vessel wall. Balloon dilatation was performed and complete apposition of the stent struts against the vessel wall was achieved, which was further confirmed by OCT. This represents the first OCT application in our country in a case of very late stent thrombosis.
