Intersectional approaches call for the study of gender-power relations as dynamic processes shaped in the context of social structures and locations, and invite the representation of diverse voices. However, these ideas are yet to be fully embraced in empirical family and marriage research. The present study addresses this gap and employs a qualitative design to investigate women's accounts of the spousal relationship and marital power over their marital life cycles in a non-Western context, Turkey. Data comes from individual interviews with 24 middle-aged women who come from different socio-economic levels and reside in different parts of the country. The analysis was conducted in two steps. In the first step, an inductive thematic analysis revealed 4 main themes: (1) transition to marriage, (2) relating to domesticity, (3) negotiating marital power, and (4) emotional tone of marriage. In the second step, a deductive rereading of the data demonstrated variations among women's experiences depending mostly on the intersection of patriarchal tradition with their socio-economic realities, and partly on their geographical locations. Women's accounts pointed to diverse ways of negotiating marital relationship and power over time, including traditional accommodation, resistance/opposition, and sharing/mutual love. Lack of morality of the humankind in the 21th century takes him to different alternatives. After all, after he can't find satisfying answers why does a person want to kill himself which is regarded as untouchable by Allah? So; we aim to reveal the students' views of Theology faculty at Kırklareli University and students from other faculties of the same university towards suicide and their religious tendencies. An increase on suicides in Turkey and throughout the world is observed recently. In this research the relationships between the opinions on suicide and individiual piety, cultural differences, gender, marital and economical statues, living places have been tried to be revealed. The research is a field research in which survey method has been used and also suitable for scanning method. The sample is consisted of 200 students from the theology faculty of Kırklareli University (N=80) and the students from other faculties of the same university (N=120) Sample has been applied as "suicade attitudes" and "Individual religion inventory". In the findings there are main differences between the attitudes towards the suicide and individual piety; and the suicide and individual piety and gender. And there are local differences of states' attitudes and faculties towards the suicide and individual piety. Pregnancy is an important period of a woman's life that can affect marital relationships because of decrease in the sexual function. This study aimed to examine the effect of sexual life on the marital adjustment of 607 healthy, pregnant women using the self-administered Sexual Quality of Life Questionnaire-Female and the Marital Adjustment Scale. Results showed that 30% of the pregnant women experienced problems during sexual intercourse and 50% had painful intercourse. The median total score of the Sexual Quality of Life Questionnaire-Female for pregnant women was 35.5, and the median total score of the Marital Adjustment Scale was 41.0. The authors found a positive moderate level correlation between the sexual quality of life for women and their marital adjustment for being pregnant (r = 0.468, p =.001). The results imply that the variance in the sexual activity during the childbearing period does occur and pregnant women need to be assessed regularly with regards to their sexuality by health care providers in a professional atmosphere. Using life role salience theory, we investigated the extent to which occupational, parental, marital, and home care roles explained mental health outcomes among female expatriate spouses. Participants (N = 86) were from English-speaking Northern American or Western European countries; the average age was 38. Results of a two-way within-subject analysis of variance suggested that the occupational role was least important. In a comparison of role expectations, participants had greater value for (than commitment to) their parental role; the reverse was true for the marital role. Results of a path analysis explained 10% of the variance in psychological distress via a direct path from career role importance (β = .14) and an indirect path from the marital role importance through marital satisfaction (β = −.12). Three paths (parental role importance, β = .14; home care role importance, β = .15; indirectly from marital role importance through marital satisfaction, β = .18) explained 24% of the variance in psychological well-being. The aim in this study was to determine the effect of certain sociocontextual variables on the level of perceived spousal support. Family members are the most significant source of social support for an individual throughout his or her life. Spouses' mutual support in a marital relationship, however, seems to be particularly important compared to other sources of social support. We interviewed 579 randomly selected married individuals in Ankara, Turkey. They responded to the Spousal Support Scale and completed the personal information form that included individual and family data. Results showed a significant relationship between the level of perceived spousal support and a variety of sociocontextual factors such as number of children, length of marriage, form of marriage, and income level. The purpose of this study was to obtain information related to the predictive variables of forgiveness among Turkish married couples who had experienced a specific offense in their marriage. In accordance with this purpose, Marital Adjustment Test, Relationship Attribution Measure and Transgression-Related Interpersonal Motivations Inventory were administered to 80 married couples. The results demonstrated that attributions especially responsibility attributions were the best predictor of forgiveness. For wives, responsibility attributions were seen to predict forgiveness, for husbands responsibility attributions and marital adjustment were the best predictors of forgiveness. In addition, sexes were differ only among transgression severity. In other words, wives found the transgression more hurtful than their husbands. Finally, it was found that the more severe the transgression increased, the more difficult the forgiveness became. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper applied the family stress model to the case of Turkey in the wake of the 2001 economic crisis. Using structural equation modeling and a nationally representative urban sample of 711 married women and 490 married men, we tested whether economic hardship and the associated family economic strain on families resulted in greater marital problems. Our results showed a modified family stress model applies to Turkey. In contrast to most previous research, economic strain had a direct effect on marital problems, and the indirect effect of strain, via emotional distress, was only significant for women. Using a 1-year longitudinal-panel design, 32 American, female expatriate spouses who relocated to Ankara, Turkey, completed measures of global functioning and were interviewed at just-arrived, 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month stages. Because of the mixed methods approach of this project, results of the Naturalistic Inquiry are reported in a companion manuscript (Bikos et al., 2007, this issue). Differences in the importance and expectation of life roles (i.e., occupational, parent, marital, homecare) were found. Quantitative results indicated no differences in life roles importance, alcohol use, marital satisfaction, or mental health functioning as a function of time-in-country. Analyses do not support the culture shock/U-curve model as a predictable pattern of adaptation. The authors conclude that time-incountry is only one of a myriad of variables that could be used to predict adaptation. This study was focused on revealing the effects of religiousness on marital satisfaction, and also to test the mediator role of perceived marital problem solving between religiousness and marital satisfaction relationship in a Turkish sample. Subjects were 92 married couples, or a total of 184 participants. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that after controlling for the variance accounted for by the control variables, namely duration of marriage, marital style, educational level, hopelessness, and submissive acts; religiousness had a major effect on marital satisfaction, but a mediator role of problem solving was not observed. Multiple classification analysis is used with data on Turkish families to examine how spouses' comparative resources are balanced in the determination of conjugal power. The bulk of the impact of each spouse's resources on power overlapped with the impact of the other spouse. However, whether assessed in terms of net increments to variance explained in power or as net category effects, the contributions of the wife had greater independent impact on power than those of the husband. The article discusses the study on the use of the term forgiveness in marriage, which affects the role of marital adjustment and its attribution. It states the definition of forgiveness in literature and the three types of its descriptions, wherein one is considered having a specific offense that could be accounted in marriage. It mentions that there are 80 married couples in Ankara who are the participants of the study, which uses the snowball sampling technique for the recruitment of the participants. It cites that the aim of the study was to determine the sex differences in terms of forgiveness, marital adjustment, and transgression severity. In addition, the research found out that there is a decrease in forgiveness as the severity of the offense increases.
