Geophysical data allowed the construction of a ~250-km-long lithospheric-scale balanced cross section of the southern Black Sea margin (Espurt et al. in Lithosphere 6:26-34, ). In this paper, we combine structural field data, stratigraphic data, and fault kinematics analyses with the 70-km-long onshore part of the section to reconstruct the geodynamic evolution of the Central Pontide orogen. These data reveal new aspects of the structural evolution of the Pontides since the Early Cretaceous. The Central Pontides is a doubly vergent orogenic wedge that results from the inversion of normal faults. Extensional subsidence occurred with an ENE-trend from Aptian to Paleocene. We infer that the Black Sea back-arc basin also opened during this period, which was also the period of subduction of the Tethys Ocean below the Pontides. As in the Western Pontides, the Cretaceous-Paleocene subsidence was interrupted from Latest Albian to Coniacian time by uplift and erosion that was probably related to a block collision and accretion in the subduction zone. The restoration of the section to its pre-shortening state (Paleocene) shows that fault-related subsidence locally reached 3600 m within the forearc basin. Structural inversion occurred from Early Eocene to Mid-Miocene as a result of collision and indentation of the Pontides by the Kırşehir continental block to the south, with 27.5 km (~28 %) shortening along the section studied. The inversion was characterized by NNE-trending shortening that predated the Late Neogene dextral escape of Anatolia along the North Anatolian Fault and the modern stress field characterized by NW-trending compression within the Eocene Boyabat basin. Abstract: 2D and 3D high-resolution seismic investigations were performed on submerged coastal archaeological sites at Iskele and near to Karantina Island in the Bay of Izmir in western Turkey. Tectonic subsidence of the coastline has submerged a number of archaeological features associated with an important Early Bronze Archaic settlement (Liman Tepe) and the classical Ionian city of Clazomenae. Seismic surveys were focused on imaging of an Archaic harbour structure and other submerged Hellenistic and Roman architectural features. Seismic data were acquired with the SEAMAP-3D ultra-high-resolution 3D marine seismic acquisition system developed for detailed archaeological site investigation. A 2D reconnaissance survey was performed over a 2 km2 area around Karantina Island to evaluate the seismic penetrability and to locate sites for further 3D investigation. This survey predominantly revealed marine sediment layers covering the local bedrock, which is characterized by scattering of seismic energy showing its rocky nature. Two ultra-high-resolution 3D seismic surveys were performed. The first covered a 350 m×30 m area in the modern harbour targeting a prominent Archaic harbour structure. The second was acquired across a 120 m×40 m area on the southeast shore of the Karantina Island close to a Roman architectural feature. The 3D surveys were acquired with nominal line spacings of 1 m, using a 8×4 pseudo-rigid hydrophone array and a Boomer source firing at 3 Hz shot frequency. Automated processing of the seismic data using a portable Linux cluster provided stacked 3D seismic volumes with 25 cm×25 cm bin size on-site. The 3D seismic survey of the harbour clearly imaged the submerged Archaic structure and the underlying sediment sequence. The seismic time slices reveal two seismic anomalies (2–3 m in diameter) in the harbour basin sediments. The 3D surveys southeast of Karantina identified a thicker marine sediment sequence overlying steeply dipping bedrock reflectors. The sediment sequence records the rapid accumulation and progradation of the coastline following the construction the Alexander causeway linking the mainland with the island in 334 B.C. Abstract: The ophiolites of Amasia in the northwestern part of the Sevan–Akera suture zone (Lesser Caucasus, NW Armenia) correspond to a well-preserved example of a major obduction of oceanic lithosphere over the South Armenian continental block. Our mapping evidenced a series of (1) un-metamorphosed gabbroic oceanic crust, (2) serpentinites and a greenschist grade tectonic melange composed of deformed pillow-basalts, radiolarites and cherts, and (3) a basal slice of garnet amphibolites bearing similar compositional features as the ophiolite. These units are sliced and deformed by post-Eocene thrusting related to the shortening of the suture zone after the collision of the South Armenian Block with Eurasia. 40Ar/39Ar dating on gabbro amphiboles yielded ages of 169.0±4.6 to 175.8±3.9Ma. This age and geochemical composition of ophiolite rocks are similar to those of other ophiolite outcrops in Armenia and NE Turkey. Structural and geochemical analyses undertaken on the garnet amphibolites suggest it to represent the obducted ophiolite metamorphic sole. All these data are in agreement with the presence of a unique ophiolite nappe at the scale of NE Turkey–Armenia originating from a Jurassic intra-oceanic back-arc basin, obducted onto the Armenian–Taurides–Anatolides microblocks in the early Late Cretaceous (c. 90Ma). The distribution of the different HLA-B*51 suballeles among patients with Behçet's disease (BD) of German (n=33) and Turkish (n=92) origin in comparison to their presence in the respective ethnically matched healthy control groups (German: n=325, Turkish: n=93) was studied. HLA-B*51x was significantly increased in both patient groups in comparison to the controls (Germans: 58% vs. 12%, OR 9.76, P<0.001; Turkish: 75% vs. 25%, OR 9.13, P<0.001). Molecular subtyping of B*51x revealed HLA-B*51011 and B*5108 as the predominant suballeles in both patient groups and controls although with a slightly increased frequency of HLA-B*5108 in the diseased individuals. HLA-B*5105 was the only further HLA-B*51x subtype detected in one Turkish patient heterozygous also for HLA-B*5101. HLA-B*5107 although present in a Turkish as well as German control was absent in the patient groups. There was also a tendency towards a higher degree of homozygosity for HLA-B*51x in both patient groups versus the matched controls (Germans: 10% in patients vs. 2,5% in controls; Turkish: 27% in patients vs. 13% in controls). Our study further supports previous hypothesis of an association of BD with B51 suballeles which share amino-acid residues at positions 63 and 67 as well as at positions 77-83 for specific peptide binding and natural killer (NK)-cell interactions. This applies to HLA-B*5101 and B*5108, but not to HLA-B*5107 different at position 67, which could be negatively associated with BD.
