The purpose of this paper is to integrate mathematical modeling and ecology by presenting an activity involving an authentic environmental problem, which is called "Pine Processionary Caterpillars Invasion." Adopting Mathematical Modeling and Education for Climate Action (EfCA) approaches, it was aimed to encourage pre-service teachers (PSTs) to use the power of mathematical modeling processes to make inferences from data and evidence and make informed decisions by producing action plans to solve an ecological problem caused by climate change. The study was conducted with eight pre-service mathematics teachers and eight pre-service science teachers in a public university in Turkey. All PSTs worked as groups so that their mastery and thinking styles enriched each other. At the end of the activity, we noticed that some of the pre-service teachers confronted difficulties such as coming up with a working mathematical model, collecting real-world data from the pine forests, and efficiently computing steps of mathematical modeling without any errors. However, pre-service teachers could make use of the views of their working partners having different disciplines and appreciated the usefulness of mathematical modeling to solve an ecological problem. They also realized the interconnectedness of species and developed empathy for the welfare of society and nature.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Breathlessness Catastrophizing Scale (BCS) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy patients with COPD (55 male/15 female, mean age: 68.7±7.3 years, FEV1%: 45.4±19.5) were included in this methodological study. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's α, and intra-rater reliability was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Correlations between the BCS and Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale (mMRCS), COPD Assessment Test (CAT), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Breathlessness Beliefs Questionnaire (BBQ), and St. the George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) scores were assessed for convergent validity. Known-group comparisons were performed according to COPD stage and dyspnea severity using the independent sample t-test. RESULTS: Internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach's α=0.941), and the ICC for reliability was 0.955. The BCS score was correlated with the mMRCS (r=0.745), CAT (r=0.652), HADS anxiety (r=0.556) and depression (r=0.588), the BBQ (r=-0.567), and SGRQ (r=0.550-0.634) scores (P < 0.05). The BCS score was higher in patients with advanced COPD (P = 0.003) and those with severe dyspnea (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The Turkish version of the BCS is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating catastrophic dyspnea in patients with COPD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to examine the convergent validity and test–retest reliability of the Turkish version of the Yale Physical Activity Survey (YPAS-TR). Eighty-one volunteer older adults were included in the study. Test–retest reliability was evaluated using the intraclass correlation coefficient. Correlation coefficients between YPAS-TR and Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE), Short Form-36, and Short Physical Performance Battery were examined for convergent validity. Acceptable intraclass correlation coefficient values were reached for YPAS-TR energy expenditure, total physical activity time and summary, vigorous, leisurely walking, moving, standing, and sitting indices (intraclass correlation coefficient =.96–.99). There was a moderate correlation between energy expenditure and total physical activity time with PASE (leisure time activities), PASE (household activities), and PASE (total) (r =.478, r =.468, r =.570, r =.406, r =.490, r =.550, respectively, p <.001). Also, a weak correlation was found between summary and leisurely walking index with PASE (household activities), standing index with PASE (leisure time activities), and PASE (total) (r =.285, p =.010; r =.257, p =.021; r =.238, p =.033; r =.283, p =.010; respectively). Objective: This study aimed to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of "The Subjective Handicap of Epilepsy (SHE)" questionnaire. Methods: Upon the permission from the authors of the questionnaire, the English questionnaire was separately translated into Turkish by two neurologists who had a native language of Turkish and who had a valid certificate for English. A single translation was created by combining these two translations by another neurologist specialized in epilepsy. Afterwards, the Turkish translation was translated back to English by two other neurologists, blind to the original questionnaire. Internal consistency of the test was measured by using the Cohen's kappa coefficients. The questionnaire was interpreted in 20 patients and was repeated after 15 days. After the intraclass consistency coefficient between the two evaluations was determined to be positive, it was applied to a total of 252 patients during the study period. Results: A total of 252 patients (146 women-57.9%, 106 men-42.1%) with a mean age of 33.4+11.5 years were included in the study. The mean age of epilepsy onset was 19.0+10.9 years, and the mean disease duration was 14.4+11.2 years. The internal consistency of the scale was found to be highly consistent with Cohen's kappa value of 0.864. The intraclass correlation coefficient value for the test-retest reliability was found to be excellent, with a value of 0.945 for the whole questionnaire (p<0.001). In a changing global environment, sustaining social work as a profession necessitates comprehensive education and heightened awareness of ecocentric perspectives and environmental ethics. Based on this information, the study aims to explore the relationship between social work students' environmental ethics awareness and their attitudes and behaviors regarding environmental issues. The study was conducted utilizing the general and relational survey model, a quantitative research methodology; the data collection was performed with an interview form consisting of the Personal Information Form, Environmental Ethics Awareness Scale, Attitude Toward Environmental Problems Scale, and Behavior Toward Environmental Problems Scale. The study comprised 461 students selected from 10 different universities offering undergraduate social work education in Türkiye, employing the purposive sampling technique. The data collected from the participants was analyzed using SPSS software. The study findings reveal that the environmental ethics awareness and attitudes of social work students toward environmental problems positively impact their behaviors regarding environmental problems. In this context, heightened environmental ethics awareness and positive attitudes toward environmental problems among students correlate with increased engagement in actions addressing environmental issues. These findings emphasize the need for future studies to assess the effectiveness of environmental education curricula and conduct evidence-based quasi-experimental group interventions. Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the physical performance, balance, gait and activities of daily living (ADL) of older individuals with long COVID syndrome (LCS). Methods: A total of 124 individuals (49% women) with a mean age of 71.8 ± 5.8 years were included in the study. Participants were divided into two groups, older individuals with LCS in the LCS group and older individuals who were not diagnosed with COVID‐19 in the CON (control) group. Physical performance of participants was evaluated with the Alusti Test, balance and gait assessment was evaluated with the Tinetti Balance and Gait Assessment (TBGA), and ADL were evaluated with the Barthel Index (BI). Results: In the evaluations between groups, the mean score of active muscular mobility of right and left upper extremities, transfer supine position to sitting, trunk in sitting position and standing, which are among the subparameters of the Alusti Test, were statistically significantly lower in LCS compared to CON (p <.05). TBGA total score and gait section mean score of TBGA were statistically significantly lower in LCS than in CON (p <.05). There was no significant difference between the groups in the balance section of the TBGA and the mean BI scores (p >.05). Conclusions: It was concluded that physical performance parameters related to active muscular mobility of the upper extremity, transfer supine position to sitting, trunk in sitting position and walking in LCS were negatively affected by the disease, but this did not affect the level of balance and independence in ADL. Most studies on nursing students' awareness and knowledge of child abuse and neglect (CAN) report insufficient knowledge. However, there are limited studies evaluating the effectiveness of educational interventions. This study aimed to examine the effect of the Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness Program (CANAP) on nursing students on their CAN knowledge and awareness levels. A randomized controlled study was conducted between 21 May and 29 June 29, with 75 students, 40 in the experimental group and 35 in the control group, studying nursing at a foundation university in Turkey. While CANAP was applied to the participants in the experimental group, no intervention was applied to those in the control group. The data were collected in three stages (before the intervention, immediately after the intervention and 1 month after the intervention) using the Personal Information Form, Diagnosis Scale of the Risks and Symptoms of Child Abuse and Neglect (DSRSCAN) and Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness Scale (CANA‐S). Data were analysed using Chi‐square and Fisher exact tests, independent samples t test and repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. The groups were homogeneous regarding the students' sociodemographic characteristics (p > 0.05). In the study, the mean DSRSCAN and CANA‐S scores of the groups were similar in the pre‐test before CANAP but increased significantly in the post‐test and re‐test (p < 0.05). All CANA‐S re‐test sub‐dimension mean scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.05). The mean scores of the experimental group in the DSRSCAN physical symptoms of abuse on the child, characteristics of parents prone to abuse and neglect, characteristics of children at risk of abuse and neglect and familial characteristics in child abuse and neglect sub‐dimensions were significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.05). CANAP effectively increases nursing students' CAN knowledge and awareness levels. Purpose: Personal health and exercise belief is an essential component of creating physical activity and exercise programs. The Health Belief Model Scale for Exercise (HBSE) is an instrument that evaluates this component. Our study aims to translate the HBSE into Turkish and to investigate its psychometric properties in the adult population. Materials and Methods: After the translation process, we included 180 participants (median age: 28 years, female/male: 115/65) in our study. Explanatory factor analysis was performed. Internal consistency was measured by Cronbach alpha and test-retest reliability was assessed using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). Convergent, divergent, and known-groups validity (gender, educational level, marital status, and regular exercise habit) were used for construct validity. Results: Factor analysis indicated six factors (factor-loadings=0.664 to 0.900). Cronbach a coefficients ranged from 0.706 to 0.842 and ICC ranged from 0.710 to 0.956. It was seen that the HBSE subscores with the scales that were used for convergent validity had a moderate-strong correlation (Rho=0.614 to 0.752 and <0.001). Age and BMI were not related to the HBSE scores (p>0.05). The HBSE total scores were higher in females and persons with regular exercise habits (p<0.05). To investigate the intra-rater reliability and the construct validity of the Turkish version of the De-Morton Mobility Index (DEMMI) in intensive care unit (ICU) survivors. Construct validity of the DEMMI was measured by correlating it with physical functioning scales. Known group comparison was made according to the Medical Research Council Sum Score (MRC-SS). Internal consistency was determined by measuring Cronbach α coefficient. Test-retest reliability was assessed by performing the DEMMI by the same researcher after 24 h and calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The minimal detectable change (MDC) value was calculated. One hundred and two patients discharged from the ICU were included. The ICC for intra-reliability was 0.972. The internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach = 0.991). The DEMMI total score was correlated with the Barthel Index (r = 0.791), Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (r = 0.722), MRC-SS (0.614), ICU length of stay (r = –0.515), and total mechanical ventilation duration (r = –0.488). The DEMMI was able to differentiate between MRC-SS subgroups (p < 0.001), whereby higher strength was associated with higher DEMMI scores. The MDC was determined to be 6.82 out of 100 points. The Turkish version of the DEMMI is reliable and valid for measuring mobility in ICU survivors. Objective: The proximal ulna has a complex and unique architectural anatomy, therefore, its fractures are difficult to manage. This paper aimed to evaluate proximal ulnar angulations that contribute to the fixation and restoration of proximal ulna fractures in the Turkish population. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 107 Turkish adult ulnae (55 right, 52 left) whose age and sex were unknown. The ulnar length (UL), proximal distance of varus angulation (PDVA), and widths at the point of varus angulation were measured with a digital caliper. The proximal ulna torsion angle (PUTA), varus angulation (VA), proximal ulna dorsal angulation (PUDA), articular angle (AA), and olecranon-diaphysis angle (ODA) were measured with a goniometer. The statistical analysis was carried out at the SPSS 21.0 program (IBM Corporation, Armonk, NY, USA). Results: The median UL was 251.97 mm (minimum: 196.84 - maximum: 497.76 mm), median PDVA was 82.7 mm (minimum: 16.21 - maximum: 108.62 mm), mean total width was 15.04±1.84 mm, mean posterior-interosseous width was 13.72±2.37 mm and mean posterior-anterior width was 15.15±1.93 mm. The mean PUTA was 27.10°±9.04°, the median VA was 14° (minimum: 5° - maximum: 23°), the median PUDA was 8° (minimum: -3° - maximum: 20°), the median AA was 25° (minimum: 19° - maximum: 39°), and the mean ODA was 17.39°±5.33°. A moderate negative correlation was detected between the PUDA and ODA (rs= -0.50, p<0.001). Conclusion: The mean proximal ulnar angulations in this study can be beneficial during surgery for the fixation of proximal ulna fractures. Background/Aim: It has been reported that both the internal carotid artery (ICA) and the common carotid artery (CCA) are associated with hypoxia, also observed in late-onset fetal growth restriction (FGR). However, it has not yet been investigated whether these Doppler measurements differ in cases of late-onset FGR. This study evaluated the ICA and the CCA Doppler parameters in late-onset FGR fetuses and compared these measurements with those of healthy fetuses. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study comprised 75 singleton pregnancies diagnosed with late-onset FGR between the 32nd and 37th weeks of gestation, alongside 75 healthy fetuses paired 1:1 based on obstetric history and gestational age between June 2022 and May 2023. The Delphi consensus of 2016 was used for the definition of late-onset FGR. The exclusion criteria were congenital anomalies, presence of any additional disease, maternal body mass index over 35 kg/m², abdominal scars hindering ultrasound visualization, use of medications such as antenatal steroids, sympathomimetics, and indomethacin that affect vascular function, drug use, smoking during pregnancy, concurrent preeclampsia, and multiple pregnancies. Upon the patients' admission to the hospital, their demographic characteristics were documented, and ultrasonographic examinations and Doppler measurements were subsequently performed. The Doppler velocimetry of the umbilical artery (UA) encompassed measurements of the systolic to diastolic ratio (S/D), pulsatility index (PI), and peak systolic velocity (PSV). The carotid artery Doppler velocimetry of the middle cerebral artery (MCA), ICA, and CCA encompassed measurements of the PI, resistance index (RI), and PSV. We assessed the diagnostic performance of Doppler measurements for late-onset FGR through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: In the late-onset FGR group, the mean UA-SD was higher (2.7 [0.6] vs. 2.5 [0.5], P=0.006), and the mean UA-PI (0.8 [0.2] vs. 0.9 [0.2], P=0.011) and mean PSV (35.6 [8.2] vs. 41.1 [7.1], P<0.001) were lower compared to the control group. In the late-onset FGR group, carotid Doppler measurements were more pronounced than UA Doppler measurements. Moreover, ICA Doppler measurements exhibited superior diagnostic performance in predicting late-onset FGR compared to other Doppler measurements (Area under the curve [AUC]=0.777, P<0.001 for ICA-PI; AUC=0.751, P<0.001 for ICA-RI; AUC=0.749, P<0.001 for ICA-PSV). Conclusion: In fetuses with late-onset FGR, UA Doppler measurements showed minimal differences compared to healthy fetuses, but differences in carotid Doppler measurements, especially in the ICA, were more pronounced. Objective: Researchers have previously investigated the connection between COVID-19 and equilibrium disorders (ED) and tinnitus. The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of tinnitus and ED in people post-treatment after being positive for COVID-19 and the association of these symptoms with Anxiety and demographic features. Material and methods: Patients from two tertiary hospitals with positive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests for SARSCOV-2 between August 2020 and May 2021 were contacted by phone. The recruited patients were asked to complete our questionnaire over the phone, a developed Turkish version of a previously applied ‘10-item close-ended questionnaire’ by Viola et al. Results: Sixty-two patients experienced ED before COVID-19 (8%). After COVID-19, the incidence of ED sufferers increased to 178 (22%), which was statistically significant (p=0.001). 110 (25.28%) of 435 female patients and 68 (18.37%) of 370 male patients had post-COVID ED. It was significantly more common in women among COVID-19 survivors (p=0.019). The number of patients who experienced tinnitus before COVID-19 was 64 (7%) and 105 (13%) after COVID-19. It was found statistically significant that the tinnitus increased after COVID-19 (p=0.001) Beck’s Anxiety Inventory ( BAI) scores were significantly higher in the post-COVID ED and post-COVID tinnitus sufferers (p=0.001, p=0.047). Conclusions: COVID-19 survivors had significantly suffered tinnitus or ED. BAI scores were significantly higher in post-COVID ED and tinnitus sufferers. So, it can be said that the patients with high Anxiety experienced more tinnitus and ED post-COVID period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To translate the ACTIVLIM-CP questionnaire, developed to assess global activity performance in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP), into Turkish and to investigate its psychometric properties. Eighty-nine children with CP, aged between 2 and 18 years (mean age: 10.08 ± 4.94 years), were included in the study. Internal consistency was measured by Cronbach's alpha and test-retest reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Convergent validity was evaluated through the pattern of correlations between the ACTIVLIM-CP with PEDI, ABILOCO-Kids, ABILHAND-Kids, and Wee-FIM scores. Known-group comparisons were made according to epilepsy existence and ambulation level measured by Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). Internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach's α = 0.990), and the ICC for the test-retest reliability was 0.990. There was a very strong correlation between ACTIVLIM-CP and ABILHAND-Kids (r = 0.946), WeeFIM (r = 0.900), PEDI Functional Skills and Caregiver Assistance scores (r = 0.954, r = 0.937, respectively), and ABILOCO-Kids (r = 0.817) (p < 0.001) score. ACTIVLIM-CP score was lower in children with epilepsy (p = 0.001) and in the high-level group according to GMFCS (p < 0.001). The Turkish adaptation of ACTIVLIM-CP is a valid and reliable scale for measuring activity limitations in children with CP and is compatible with other scales evaluating activity limitations. This article describes use of the 16 cubes game with 30 students (ages 7-11) born with blindness or low vision and attending a special school in Turkey. The game develops participants' spatial skills as he/she sorts cubes of various textures into large cardboard stands. Mothers' emotion regulation, mental health, and feeling of helplessness in caring for their child may vary based on maternal attachment classifications. Particularly, insecure attachment and unresolved state of mind can act as risk factors. Therefore, we examined how emotion regulation strategies of suppression and cognitive reappraisal, maternal symptoms of depression and anxiety, and caregiving helplessness differ based on maternal attachment classifications in the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). Fifty mothers of children in the early childhood (AgeRange = 12-56 months) completed a pack of questionnaires, including Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Brief Symptom Inventory, and Caregiving Helplessness Questionnaire. Then AAI interview protocol was administered and coded. Mothers did not vary in emotion regulation strategies, indicating emotion regulation balance. However, mothers with secure/autonomous AAIs reported less anxiety than mothers whose AAIs were judged to show unresolved loss or unresolved trauma. The mothers who provided AAIs judged to be secure/autonomous scored lower in depression and caregiving helplessness than mothers whose AAIs were judged to show unresolved loss or unresolved trauma. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies conducting AAI in Turkish mothers. To support mothers' positive parenting practices and designing effective early interventions in developing countries like Turkey, understanding the factors associated with feelings of helplessness in caregiving can play an important role. Therefore, we explored how mothers' depression and anxiety symptoms, and emotion regulation strategies of expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal can contribute to caregiving helplessness during toddlerhood. We also examined whether depression and anxiety can mediate the relationship between emotion regulation strategies and caregiving helplessness. A sample of 552 healthy Turkish mothers (MAge = 32.11) with 1–4 year old healthy children (MAge = 1.51) replied to advertisements we shared face-to-face and filled out a pack of questionnaires including a demographic form, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Brief Symptom Inventory and Caregiving Helplessness Questionnaire. A series of path analysis were conducted to reveal the association between emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and emotional suppression), depression and anxiety symptoms, and caregiving helplessness. After controlling for socio-economic status (SES), maternal anxiety but not maternal depression positively predicted caregiving helplessnes. Unlike cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression positively predicted caregiving helplessness. SES had an indirect effect (via suppression) on caregiving helplessness on caregiving helplessness. In toddlerhood, maternal anxiety rather than depression, and expressive supression rather than cogntivie reappraisal could be potential risk factors for caregiving helplessness. To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Ottawa Sitting Scale (OSS) developed for acute care patients into Turkish and to examine its psychometric properties in intensive care unit (ICU) survivors. After translation process the Turkish version of the scale was adminstered to eighty-one patients aged 39–82 years after discharge from the ICU and videotape was recorded. Two physiotherapists watched the videotaped records during the evaluation and scored. Test-retest reliability was assesed by scoring the same video recordings 15 days after the initial scoring. Correlations of the OSS with Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Functional Independence Measurement (FIM), the ICU length of stay and, total mechanical ventilation duration were assessed for convergent validity. The intra-class correlation coefficient for inter and intra-rater reliability was 0.989–0.994 and 0.998 respectively. The internal consistency was excellent (Cronbach's α = 0.998). The OSS score was highly correlated with the BBS total score (r = 0.716), the BBS unsupported sitting item score (r = 0.863), and moderately correlated with the total score of the FIM (r = 0.602), the number of days in ICU (r= −0.545), and total mechanical ventilation duration (r = −0.518). The Turkish version of OSS has been found to be valid and reliable in assessment of sitting balance in patients discharged from intensive care unit. Physiotherapeutic measurements are crucial and necessary to determine the functional status of the patients. A sense of belonging is one of the most important human needs. Immigrants might experience this differently because they tend to feel a lack of belonging to their host or home country. Nowadays, however, social media allows immigrants and diasporic groups to establish a digital sense of belonging. Members of the Turkish diaspora in Germany are inclined to use social media, especially Facebook, as a platform to connect with their roots, be informed about Turkish news, prove their Turkishness, and provide solidarity for each other. For this paper, we interviewed fifteen Turkish-Germans to get some insight into their perceptions about developing a digital belonging to Turkey through Facebook. We used discourse analysis to analyse their statements. The results suggest that Facebook allows Turkish-Germans to develop a digital belonging to Turkey through its specific features; however, it decreases their sense of belonging to Germany, as stated in the interviews. Objective: Oculoauriculovertebral spectrum (OAVS) is a genetically and clinically heterogeneous disorder that occurs due to a developmental field defect of the first and second pharyngeal arches. Even though recent whole exome sequencing studies (WES) have led to identification of several genes associated with this spectrum in a subset of individuals, complete pathogenesis of OAVS remains unsolved. In this study, molecular genetic etiology of OAVS was systematically investigated. Design/Setting/Patients: A cohort of 23 Turkish patients with OAVS, referred to Hacettepe University Hospital, Department of Pediatric Genetics from 2008 to 2018, was included in this study. Minimal diagnostic criteria for OAVS were considered as unilateral microtia or hemifacial microsomia with preauricular skin tag. The cohort was clinically reevaluated for craniofacial and extracranial findings. Molecular etiology was investigated using candidate gene sequencing following copy number variant (CNV) analysis. WES was also performed for 2 of the selected patients. Results: Patients in the study cohort presented similar demographic and phenotypic characteristics to previously described patients in the literature except for a higher frequency of bilaterality, cardiac findings, and intellectual disability/developmental delay. CNV analysis revealed a possible genetic etiology for 3 patients (13%). Additional WES in 1 of the 2 patients uncovered a novel heterozygous nonsense variant in Elongation factor Tu GTP-binding domain-containing 2 (EFTUD2) causing mandibulofacial dysostosis with microcephaly (MFDM), which clinically overlaps with OAVS. Conclusion: Detailed clinical evaluation for any patient with OAVS is recommended due to a high rate of accompanying systemic findings. In current study, proximate compositions (ash, lipid and protein) of seven Red macroalgae (Laurencia obtusa, Liagora viscida, Liagora ceranoides, Gracilaria bursa-pastoris, Carradoriella elongata, Halopithys incurva and Tricleocarpa fragilis) collected from Turkey (Çanakkale and Antalya) were determined. The differences observed between biochemical compositions such as ash, lipid and protein of seven red macroalgae species were statistically significant (p<0.05). The lowest and highest ash, lipid and protein values of seven red macroalgae were 38.86±0.15% (Gracilaria bursa-pastoris)- 85.61±0.22% (Tricleocarpa fragilis), 0.23±0.02% (Tricleocarpa fragilis)- 1.87±0.08% (Carradoriella elongata), 2.79±0.02% (Liagora ceranoides)- 9.72±0.35% (Halopithys incurva), respectively. Gracilaria bursa-pastoris (38.86±0.15%), Carradoriella elongata (42.89±0.06%) and Halopithys incurva (42.28±0.44%) were similar each other (p>0.05). The lipid (Liagora viscida (0.44±0.07%), Liagora ceranoides (0.42±0.07%), Gracilaria bursa-pastoris (0.43±0.04%)) and protein (Tricleocarpa fragilis (2.93±0.39%), Liagora ceranoides (2.79±0.02%)) amounts of red macroalgae tested in study were similar each other (p>0.05) but the different from other red macroalgae (p<0.05). In conclusion, the information of the proximate compositions of seven red macroalgae are important for the evaluation of potential sources for commercial and human consumption. This article explores the making of the National Palaces Privy Purse Archive, which later was conjoined with the State Archives of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey (the Ottoman Archives), and investigates the silences in the Ottoman and Iraqi historiographies that were produced in this process. Building on Michel-Rolph Trouillot's scholarship, I argue that the moment of fact assembly and the moment of fact retrieval should be highlighted in understanding historiographic shifts as well as their related silences. This article further elaborates on the archival material in the Privy Purse record group, now accessible through the State Archives of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey in Istanbul, Turkey, and suggests ways in which the Privy Purse record group could inform Ottoman and Iraqi historiographies in the future. Algae biomass could be one of the most important economic values in near future. For this reason, we determined the biochemical compositions and molecular weight profiles (MWPs) of eight macroalgae; Green Algae (Codium fragile, Ulva intestinalis, Chaetomorpha linum, and Codium bursa), Red Algae ( Ellisolandia elongata, Jania rubens, and Amphiroa rigida), Brown Algae (Padina pavonica) collected from different regions in Turkey. The differences measured between biochemical compositions such as ash, lipid, and protein of macroalgae species were statistically significant (P<0.05). The lowest and highest ash, lipid, and protein values of eight macroalgae tested were 30.599 ± 2.739 % (Ulva intestinalis) -81.231 ± 0.527 % (Amphiroa rigida), 0.190 ± 0.063 % (Ellisolandia elongata) -1.764 ± 0.090 % (Chaetomorpha linum), and 2.057 ± 0.093 (Amphiroa rigida) -15.280 ± 0.621 (Chaetomorpha linum). The highest levels of MWP of macroalgae tested were determined in 2532 Da ≥. The lowest levels of MWP belonging to the macroalgae was observed in 2532-13000 Da except for Ulva intestinalis and Padina pavonica belonging to 67000 Da ≤. The values observed 2532 Da ≥ were similar to each other except for Ulva intestinalis. The 13700 - 67000 Da and 2532-13000 Da levels belonging to Ulva intestinalis were higher than those of other tested macroalgae. However, level of Ulva intestinalis (67000 Da ≤) was lower than those of tested macroalgae species, followed by Padina pavonica. In conclusion, biochemical compositions of tested macroalgae can make important contributions to feed formulations and functional foods. In addition, based on our biochemical composition analysis the specific macroalgae species are the most promising algal content for use in different industrial areas such as cosmetics, drugs, and functional foods. Learning, which is the main key of innovation, is an indispensable element for companies to gain sustainable competitive advantage. Although not being adequately studied in management literature, network learning capability, a type of organizational learning ability, is a determining factor in the innovation process. Likewise, open-mindedness is a component that accelerates the creation of knowledge in the organization as well as encouraging the organization to be open towards new opportunities and to value different opinions. In this study, a model including these variables was designed and the mediator role of network learning in the relationship between open-mindedness and innovation performance was explored. It is suggested that open-mindedness has a positive effect on innovation performance and that network learning capability possesses a mediator role in this relationship. The data were collected through surveys answered by the middle and senior managers of Turkey's leading companies. As a result, it is pointed out that there is a positive and significant relationship between open-mindedness and innovation performance, and that network learning has a mediator effect on this relationship. This study adds value to the management literature by highlighting the momentousness of network learning capability in the innovation process as well as offering several avenues of future studies and implications for different stakeholders. Amniocentesis is one of the safest procedures of prenatal diagnosis. This study aimed to show amniocentesis indications, rate of successful amniocyte culture, complications and outcomes of these pregnancies undergoing prenatal diagnosis in eastern part of Turkey, especially Van province and its nearby. Between 2018 and 2020, 253 patients were referred to our center for amniocentesis and 120 patients giving consent were enrolled from Van and its surrounding provinces. The most frequent indication was high risk in prenatal screening tests whereas the highest chromosomal abnormality was found in fetuses with abnormal ultrasonographic findings. Overall, 11.6% of fetuses had chromosomal anomaly. The most abundant chromosomal abnormality was Trisomy 21, followed by trisomy 18 and 13. Except one case with amniotic leakage no complications were found. Eleven pregnancies were terminated whereas one fetus was born with Turner syndrome and two pregnancies resulted with stillbirth. In conclusion, fetuses with abnormal ultrasound screening had higher chromosome anomaly diagnosed by amniocentesis and compatible with the literature, amniocentesis is a safe and successful method of prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities. Objectives: Collagen-VI-related myopathies are caused by both dominant and recessive mutations in the three collagen-VI-related genes (COL6A1, COL6A2, and COL6A3) and present as two different major clinical entities; Bethlem myopathy and Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy. Methods: In this study, we evaluated the clinical, pathologic, and genetic features of 8 patients with Bethlem myopathy from 3 families. Results: We inspected disease course differences with age and mutations. Different variants in COL6A1 and COL6A2 genes were detected. Muscle MRI of the lower limbs showed a specific pattern of muscle involvement with variable severity of fatty infiltration. One family had essential hypertension. Conclusion: Genotype-phenotype correlation studies are critical in determining gene or mutation-targeted therapies, patient follow-up, severity and progression prediction, and genetic counselling. Employment participation often has a positive effect on the psychosocial well-being of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. When the employment models of different countries for individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia are examined, it can be stated that each country has similar and different practices. Quota and sheltered employment are the most common methods which are used in the employment of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia in Turkey. However, based on the literature, it is seen that there are individual (education level, disease prognosis, drug abuse), social (discrimination, stigmatization, social exclusion) and legal obstacles (lack of specific policy arrangements) to these individuals' participation in employment. This study aims to reveal the problems experienced by individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia in this area. In this study, the gamma dose rates in outdoor air at seventy-seven points around Bolu province were meausured using a counter (Eberline, ESP-2). Radiological hazards were evaluated by estimating the excess lifetime cancer risks caused by external exposure. The gamma dose rates measured varied from 11 to 68 nGyh-1with an average value of 22 nGy h-1. The avarege value of the corresponding outdoor annual effective dose and the excess lifetime cancer risk was found as 27.23 μSv and 0.95x10-4, respectively. This is a retrospective study of 139 termination of pregnancies (TOPs) between November 2015 and November 2017 to demonstrate the indications. We have shown that 60.4%, 34.5% and 5% of the terminations were performed because of genetic disorders, foetal or obstetrical problems, and maternal causes, respectively. Congenital abnormalities (43.8%), anhydramniosis (17.2%) and chromosomal abnormalities (15.1%) were the most frequent causes of the TOPs. The central nervous system seemed to be the most frequent indicator found in our study. The critical finding is the presence of nine (6.4%) terminations because of foetal reasons beyond the 24th gestational week. A vaginal termination occurred in 91.4% of cases, whereas a hysterotomy was performed in 8.6% of the cases. Previous uterine surgery was the most significant risk factor for a hysterotomy. Knowing the foetal indications is essential to know the aetiological and medico-legal backgrounds of the TOPs for better planning and medical counselling. Impact statement What is already known on this subject? Congenital anomalies are most common cause of termination of wanted pregnancies. Terminations beyond 24 weeks are also evaluated as unethical and create an ethical concern. The legal limitations differ between countries in terms of the legal limit in pregnancy for terminations. What do the results of this study add? We have demonstrated the congenital anomalies are the most common reason for pregnancy terminations after excluding fetal demise and unwanted pregnancies. We also showed that congenital anomalies and chromosomal abnormalities are most common indications for terminations of pregnancies beyond 24 weeks. The legal arrangements related to the termination of pregnancies in Turkey are described. Prior uterine surgery is a significant risk factor for hysterotomies in the termination of pregnancies. Objective: World Health Organization (WHO) declared cesarean section rate decreasing maternal and fetal mortality as 10-15%. The cesarean rates gradually increase and the ministries of health try to get under control these rates by various policies. The cesarean rate increased from 5% to 45% in Turkey from 1988 to 2010. Turkish Ministry of Health and Turkish Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (TJOD) have aimed to decrease cesarean rate to 35% in 2013. This study aims to investigate and evaluate cesarean rates and the most common cesarean indications of 2010-2014 in Ankara Dr. Zekai Tahir Burak Maternal Health Training and Research (ZTB) Hospital which is a tertiary maternity and obstetrics hospital. Methods: The archive records of the patients who delivered in the obstetrics department of ZTB Hospital between 2010 and 2014 were investigated to determine the number of cesarean section and cesarean indications. Results: Between 2010 and 2014, 64,154 deliveries occurred in ZTB Hospital. Of them, 23,200 were cesarean section. Mean cesarean rate of five years was found as 36.2 ±3.96%. When cesarean indications were evaluated, the most common 10 reasons of cesarean section were found as previous single or multiple cesarean section (50.9%), cephalopelvic disproportion (16.5%), fetal distress (12.1%), breech presentation (7.7%), non-progressive labor (3.2%), macrosomic baby (≥4000 g for the fetus of diabetic pregnant women, and ≥4500 g for other pregnant women), malpresentation (face, foot, deflection presentation etc.; except breech presentation, 1.6%), and cord prolapsus (0.8%). The greatest portion of cesarean section indications is the previous cesarean section, which is 50.9%. Conclusion: We found that the mean cesarean rate (36.2%) for 2010-2014 in the obstetrics department of our hospital was close to the rate (35%) aimed by TJOD and the Ministry of Health in 2013. In order to decrease cesarean rates in Turkey to the level (15%) determined by WHO, further studies, the implementation of obstetric guideline recommendations through the joint works of the Ministry and the society in Turkey and additional briefing of pregnant women and Turkish obstetricians are required. Mass gatherings pooling people from different parts of the world-the largest of which is to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for Hajj-may impose risks for acquisition and dissemination of infectious diseases. A substantial number of pilgrims to Hajj and Umrah are Turkish citizens (456,000 in 2014) but data are lacking on scale of the problem. We did a retrospective cross-sectional multicenter study in Turkey to explore the range of infections among inpatients who had recently returned from the Arabian Peninsula. Our inclusion criteria were patients who had acquired an infection during their trip to an Arabian Peninsula country, or who became symptomatic within 1 week of their return. The data were collected retrospectively for January 1, 2013 and March 1, 2015. 185 Turkish patients were recruited to the study across 15 referral centers with travel associated infectious diseases after returning from Arabian Peninsula countries (predominantly Saudi Arabia 163 [88.1 %] for religious purposes 162 [87.5 %]). Seventy four (40.0 %) of them were ≥ 65 years old with numerous comorbidities including diabetes (24.3 %) and COPD (14.1 %). The most common clinical diagnosis was respiratory tract infections (169 [91.5 %]), followed by diarrheal diseases (13 [7 %]), and there was one case of MERS-CoV. Patients spent a median of 5 (3-7) days as hospital inpatients and overall mortality was 1.1 %. Returning travellers from the Arabian Peninsula present as inpatients with a broad range of infectious diseases similar to common community acquired infections frequently seen in daily medical practices in Turkey. In the assessment of earnings, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Tax Procedure Law (TPL) in Turkey apply different principles. As a result, difference between book income and taxable income arises because of different procedures each system applies. This study examines and compares IFRS income and TPL income and investigates which measure is more value relevant than the other in explaining earnings-return relation. We provide supportive evidence regarding value relevance of IFRS income while we cannot find significant evidence regarding value relevance of TPL income. Regarding the ongoing debate over the necessity of converging two income numbers, we conclude that if IFRS income converges to TPL income a considerable level of information will be lost. Summary: Lafora disease (LD) is a type of autosomal recessive, progressive myoclonus epilepsy resulting mostly from mutations in the EPM2A and NHLRC1 genes. Mutational analysis in both genes was initiated with the aim of establishing LD DNA diagnosis in Turkey. Four novel NHLRC1 (p.G131X, p.P69S and p.D82H) and EPM2A (p.V7A) and two recurrent NHLRC1 (p.D146N) and EPM2A (p.R241X) mutations were identified in six families. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence, etiology and risk factors for mortality of patients with nosocomial candidemia. Subjects and Methods: This observational study was performed at Haydarpasa Numune Training and Research Hospital, a tertiary care hospital with 750 beds, between the years 2004 and 2007. Fifty defined cases with a nosocomial bloodstream infection caused by Candida species were included in the study. All demographic, microbiological and clinical records for each patient were collected using a standardized form. Blood culture was performed by automated blood culture system, and those samples positive for yeast were subcultured on Sabouraud agar. Results: The mean incidence density of nosocomial candidemia was 0.58/10,000 patient-days/year (range 0.17-1.4). Candidemia episodes increased from 0.17/10,000 to 1.4/10,000 patient-days/year (p < 0.0001). Candida albicans and non-albicans Candida accounted for 15 (30%) and 35 (70%) cases, respectively. The overall mortality was 56% and was significantly associated with stayingin the intensive care unit (odds ratio: 3.667, 95% confidence interval: 1.07-12.54, p = 0.034). Aims: The aims of this study: 1) to determine postural changes according to wearing glasses and relationship between these changes and deep cervical flexor muscle group, 2) to investigate effectiveness of endurance training on postural changes and deep cervical flexor muscles. Methods: Seventy-three patients who had neck pain participated in this study and divided into two groups according to wearing glasses or not. Before and after endurance training for 6 weeks, postural angles of cervical region were counted, deep cervical flexor endurance test was performed and score of pain and disability index were noted of all subjects. Results: Before treatment endurance levels were lower and scores of disability index were higher in experimental group (p< 0.05). After treatment endurance levels were improved, and scores of disability index were decreased more significantly in control group (p< 0.05). There were no significant differences between gaze, head and neck angles in both groups after treatment (p> 0.05). Conclusion: As a result it was seen that wearing glasses affected endurance of deep neck flexor muscles negatively, and it was not found relationship between postural angles and endurance of deep cervical flexor muscles. Abstract: A horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) and a free water surface flow (FWSF) constructed wetlands (4m2 of each) were set up on the campus of Harran University, Sanliurfa, Turkey. The main objective of the research was to compare the performance of two systems to decide the better one for future planning of wastewater treatment system on the campus. Both of the wetland systems were planted with Phragmites australis and Canna indica. During the observation period (10 months), environmental conditions such as pH, temperature and total chemical oxygen demand (COD), soluble COD, total biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), soluble BOD, total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphate (TP), total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies of the systems were determined. According to the results, average yearly removal efficiencies for the HSSF and the FWSF, respectively, were as follows: total COD (75.7% and 69.9%), soluble COD (85.4% and 84.3%), total BOD (79.6% and 87.6%), soluble BOD (87.7% and 95.3%), TN (33.2% and 39.4%), and TP (31.5% and 6.5%). Soluble COD and BOD removal efficiencies of both systems increased gradually since the start-up. After nine months of operation, above 90% removal of organic matters were observed. The treatment performances of the HSSF were better than that of the FWSF with regard to the removal of suspended solids and total COD at especially high temperatures. In FWSF systems, COD concentrations extremely exceeded the discharge limit values due to high concentrations of algae in spring months. The performance of the two systems was modelled using an artificial neural network-back-propagation algorithm. The ANN model was competent at providing reasonable match between the measured and the predicted concentrations of total COD (R =0.90 for HSSF and R =0.96 for FWSF), soluble COD (R =0.90 for HSSF and R =0.74 for FWSF) and total BOD (R =0.94 for HSSF and R =0.84 for FWSF) in the effluents of constructed wetlands. Monitoring groundwater quality by cost-effective techniques is important as the aquifers are vulnerable to contamination from the uncontrolled discharge of sewage, agricultural and industrial activities. Faulty planning and mismanagement of irrigation schemes are the principle reasons of groundwater quality deterioration. This study presents an artificial neural network (ANN) model predicting concentration of nitrate, the most common pollutant in shallow aquifers, in groundwater of Harran Plain. The samples from 24 observation wells were monthly analysed for 1 year. Nitrate was found in almost all groundwater samples to be significantly above the maximum allowable concentration of 50 mg/L, probably due to the excessive use of artificial fertilizers in intensive agricultural activities. Easily measurable parameters such as temperature, electrical conductivity, groundwater level and pH were used as input parameters in the ANN-based nitrate prediction. The best back-propagation (BP) algorithm and neuron numbers were determined for optimization of the model architecture. The Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm was selected as the best of 12 BP algorithms and optimal neuron number was determined as 25. The model tracked the experimental data very closely ( R = 0.93). Hence, it is possible to manage groundwater resources in a more cost-effective and easier way with the proposed model application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
