Objective: The database http://cedd.saglik-network.org (CEDD-NET) has been operating since 2013 in Turkey. All pediatric endocrinologists can propose projects to this network. The aim of our study was to determine the impact of CEDD-NET on the transformation of multicenter studies into scientific publications and assess the academic characteristics of the studies that have been transcribed into publication. Methods: All the studies that were opened to patient admission on the website between August 26, 2013 and March 1, 2021 were reviewed. Results: A total of 30 studies were accepted and opened for data entry. The median data collection period was 12 (1.5-24) months, while the median number of researchers participated was 23 (3-180), the median number of cases was 120 (26-192). The average cost was $2113 (1370-3118). Out of 30 studies, data entry was completed for 27. Sixteen publications were produced from 14 studies, 13 ot them have not published yet. The median time from the end of data entry to publication of the study was 686 (168-1608) days. While the median impact factor of the journals in which the studies were published was 1.803 (1.278-5.399), the median number of citations was 6.5 (0-49), and cited by 99 times in Web of Science indexed journals in total. Conclusion: CEDD-NET appears to be productive and effective as all the publications are of high quality that have been published in the Q1-Q2 categories. This study demonstrated the benefits and necessity of establishing nationwide databases, even covering more than one country, in specialized branches, such as pediatric endocrinology where rare diseases are of concern. Background/Aim: Bone age (BA) is important in the diagnosis and follow-up of pediatric growth disorders. Skeletal maturation can vary according to the geographical region and climate. The goal of this study is to investigate whether Greulich-Pyle (GP) method is suitable for detecting BA for Turkish children for all age groups and both genders. Methods: In our retrospective cohort study, the roentgenograms of all pediatric patients who visited the pediatrics or pediatric endocrinology outpatient clinics and underwent left hand and wrist radiographs for suspicious trauma or BA determination were examined with reference to the GP atlas. Patients without evidence of chronic disease or growth disorders with body size and weight values between the 25th-75th percentile were included. Poor quality roentgenograms were excluded. Results: Radiographs of 665 patients were analyzed and 310 (161 boys and 149 girls, age range 13-203 months) patients were included. The rate of concordant BA with CA was significantly higher in the children above 120 months of age and low BA was significantly higher among the children aged 120 months or below (P<0.001). The rate of concordant BA with CA was significantly higher among girls and low BA was significantly higher among boys (P=0.014). Among patients aged 120 months or below, low BA was significantly higher in the boys (P<0.001). There were no significant differences between the boys and girls aged 120 months and above (P=1.000). Conclusion: Although widely used in the determination BA, local studies on the accuracy and reliability of the GP method are insufficient in less developed countries. The accuracy of this method in Turkish children, especially boys under the age of 10 years, is controversial, and correct standards should be developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Benign transient hyperphosphatasemia (BTH), even a known condition, is not very well managed by primary care physicians. The diagnostic criteria for BTH were alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels above 3-5 times greater than the age adjusted upper limit of normal among children under 5 years with no evidence of liver or bone disease whose ALP values resolved within 4 months. Methods: This study involved 15 patients aged 0-5 years, who were referred to the pediatric endocrinology clinic for elevated ALP levels. They were diagnosed with BTH. We examined demographic and biochemical parameters including ALP and ALP isoenzymes, liver enzymes, calcium, phosphate, and parathormone (PTH) levels to rule out liver or bone disease as a cause for hyperphosphatasaemia. Results: Of 15 patients 7 were male and 8 were female. Mean age was 2.45 ± 1.09 (range 1.2-4.6) years. Mean serum ALP level was 2315 ± 1028 IU/L (1102-4662), while liver enzymes, calcium, phosphate, PTH and vitamin D3 levels were in normal ranges. The mean normalization period of ALP was 2.4 ± 1.1 (0.5-4) months, and all were normal at the end of 4 months without any treatment. Conclusion: This study and literature knowledge related to BTH has shown that being aware of BTH is very important for a primary care physician. Objective: Approaches to diagnosis and treatment of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in children vary among countries and even among centers in the same country. This survey, aiming tofacilitate the process of preparing the new consensus on GHD by the Turkish Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Society, was designed to evaluate the current practices in diagnosis and treatment of GHD in different centers in Turkey. Methods: A questionnaire covering relevant items for diagnosis and treatment of GHD was sent out to all pediatric endocrinology centers. Results: Twenty-four centers returned the questionnaire. The most frequently used GH stimulation test was L-dopa, followed by clonidine. Eighteen centers used a GH cut-off value of 10 ng/mL for the diagnosis of GHD; this value was 7 ng/mL in 4 centers and 5 ng/mL in 2 centers. The most frequently used assay was immunochemiluminescence for determination of GH, insulin-like growth factor-1 and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 concentrations. Sex steroid priming in both sexes was used by 19 centers. The most frequently used starting dose of recombinant human GH (rhGH) in prepubertal children was 0.025-0.030 mg/kg/day and 0.030-0.035 mg/kg/day in pubertal children. Growth velocity was used in the evaluation for growth response to rhGH therapy in all centers. Anthropometric measurements of patients every 3-6 months, fasting blood glucose, bone age and thyroid panel evaluation were used by all centers at follow-up. Main indications for cessation of therapy were decreased height velocity and advanced bone age. Fourteen centers used combined treatment (rhGH and gonadotropin-releasing analogues) to increase final height. Conclusion: Although conformity was found among centers in Turkey in current practice, it is very important to update guideline statements and to modify, if needed, the approach to GHD over time in accordance with new evidence-based clinical studies. Recent census figures in Turkey show that out of a population of 76.6 million, 22.7 million (29.7%) are younger than 18 years old. The great majority (>95%) of pediatric cases of diabetes in Turkey are type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). In recent years, with increase in number of pediatric endocrine centers around the country, the important issue of care for diabetic children and adolescents has been revived and major steps have been taken for improvement in pediatric care and its outreach to all diabetic children. The Childhood Diabetes Group continues its activities in cooperation with the Turkish Ministry of Health. A list of areas of interest of the Group include "School programs", "Incidence/prevalence studies and national registry system", "Educational guidelines for diabetes in children", "Increasing the numbers of camps and summer schools for diabetic children", "Organization of educational programs for the health team", "National guidelines for transition of diabetic children to adult clinics", "Improvement of school canteens", "Educational spots" to improve awareness of diabetes. The article presents a case study of a male patient in Ankara, Turkey that underwent prophylactic thyroidectomy due to RET mutation-positive multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) 2B. Indications of 16 cafe-au-lait macules were discovered through physical examination at the Akara University Department of Pediatric Endocrinology. Results were normal for the pentagastrin-stimulated calcitonin test.

The article discusses the highlights of the 22nd European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) Summer School and the 47th Annual Meeting of ESPE held in September 2008 in Sapanca and Istanbul, Turkey, respectively. Participants at the Summer School were united at in their desire to eliminate the most common preventable form of mental retardation through support for newborn screening programs for congenital hypothyroidism.

The article presents a speech by European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) president Atilla B¨yükgebiz a the 47th Annual Meeting of ESPE heldin September 2008 in Istanbul, Turkey, in which she discussed public health issues in pediatric endocrinoliogy and diabetes, the summer school organized by the society and the ESPE 2008 Memorial Forest.

A calendar of international pediatric endocrinology meetings for 2008-2010 is presented, including the APEG Annual Scientific Meeting in Canberra, Australia, the 11th European Congress of Enndocrinology in Istanbul, Turkey and the XVII National Congress of SIEDP in Naples, Italy.
