Abstract: The presence of specific craniofacial deviations may be evidence of abnormal early brain development in bipolar disorder (BD). This study aimed to compare mandibular morphology in patients with BD versus nonpsychiatric controls using panoramic radiography. A total of 215 recorded images, 70 patients with BD and 145 controls, were evaluated. Seven mandibular parameters of the ramus height (RH), condylar height (CH), gonial angle (GA), antegonial angle (AGA), antegonial notch depth (AND), ramal notch depth (RND), and bigonial width (BGW) were measured in a blinded manner. Group analysis was conducted separately for males and females. The univariate comparisons showed increased values in RH, CH, AND, RND, and BGW and decreased values in GA in males with BD compared with male controls. In addition, females with BD had higher RH, CH, RND, and BGW values in comparison to female controls. The differences were statistically significant. Data from multivariate analyses revealed that increases in RH and BGW values in both sexes were significant predictive variables that distinguished patients with BD from controls. Moreover, deeper AND was the most prominent predictor that distinguished male patients with BD from male controls. The identification of subtle changes in mandibular measurements is consistent with the notion of impaired neurodevelopment in BD., (Copyright © 2024 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. All rights reserved.)

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the mandibular bone changes on panoramic radiographs of thalassemia and sickle cell anemia (SCA) patients using fractal dimension (FD) analysis and to compare the findings obtained from healthy individuals., Materials and Methods: A total of 90 panoramic radiographs (from 30 patients with thalassemia, 30 patients with SCA and 30 healthy individuals) were assessed to measure FD, mandibular cortical width (MCW), panoramic mandibular index (PMI) in the mandible. Three region of interests (ROI) of angulus, corpus, and interdental bone were created. FD was calculated using ImageJ program., Results: In thalassemia group, the mean value of FD was 1.11, 1.03, and 1.02 in interdental bone, corpus, and angulus, respectively. In SCA group, the mean value of FD was 1.10, 1.05, and 1 in interdental bone, corpus, and angulus, respectively. In control group, the mean value of FD was 1.09, 1.04, and 1 in interdental bone, corpus, and angulus, respectively. FD value of interdental bone are significantly higher in thalassemia group than control group. FD values of corpus and angulus values did not show a significant difference between the groups., Conclusions: Fractal analysis may be used and recommended for evaluation of the bone changes induced by hemoglobinopathies., Competing Interests: None

Objective: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the prevalence of apical periodontitis in root canal treated teeth in Turkish subpopulation and to evaluate the effects of both coronal restoration quality and root canal treatment (RCT) quality on apical periodontitis., Materials and Methods: Panoramic images of individuals who applied to our department for different diagnostic reasons were randomly and retrospectively scanned. Total RCT number, RCT quality, type of coronal restoration, restoration quality, periapical status, and total number of teeth were recorded. The criteria used for coronal restorations quality and RCT quality were defined by De Moor et al. and slightly modified by Gunduz et al. Periapical status was assessed by the periapical index developed by Orstavik et al. Pearson's Chi-square test was used for statistical analysis, and the intraobserver agreements were assessed by Kappa coefficients. Values of P < 0.05 were accepted to be meaningful., Results: The total examined teeth number was 6064, of which had 541 (8.9%) RCT. The prevelance of apical periodontitis was 40.5%. The number of adequate RCT was 178 (32.9%), and 138 (77.5%) of them were healthy. The number of adequate coronal restoration was 334, and 62.3% of them were healthy. For the cases that have adequate coronal restorations, there was statistically significant relationship between adequate RCT and periapical status (P < 0.001)., Conclusion: The prevelance of apical periodontitis was 40.5% and there was statistically significant relationship between adequate RCT and periapical status., Competing Interests: None

Aim: A mesiodens is the most frequent type of supernumerary tooth. They can be related to several complications, such as ectopic eruption and midline diastema. The aim of the present study was to assess the radiographic properties of mesiodens by analyzing the associated age, sex distribution, number of mesiodens per patient, shape, direction of eruption, and their association with complications., Methods: The present study was performed using panoramic radiographs of 14 400 pediatric patients (4-14 years old) who visited the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Gaziosmanpasa University for a variety of dental complaints from 2015 to 2018., Results: There were 82 mesiodens diagnosed in a total of 71 patients. Among the 82 mesiodens, 51 (62.1%) were conical in shape, which was the most commonly seen shape, followed by 14 supplemental (17.07%), and 12 (14.6%) tuberculate. Of the 82 mesiodens, 65 (79.2%) were aligned vertically, nine (10.9%) were inverted, and eight (9.7%) were horizontally placed. Clinical complications were observed in 76.8% of patients., Conclusion: The management of mesiodens can be performed using three methods: (a) spontaneous eruption; (b) early intervention; and (c) delayed intervention. However, the management of mesiodens should be evaluated on an individual basis to determine the best treatment method. Background: The roots of primary molars were found in the permanent dentition without symptoms on the clinical or radiographic examination. However, their incidence could not be achieved on the current literature., Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the radiographic features of the embedded primary molar roots in adult dentulous patients in Turkey., Materials and Methods: The data, from 5000 adult patients, including panoramic radiographs and demographic information, were evaluated retrospectively. The prevalence and location of the primary molar roots in the jaws were determined, as well as the prevalence and location of the primary molar roots in the adjacent permanent root levels., Results: Among 5000 Turkish population dentulous patients, 20 retained primary molar roots (0.38%) were found in 19 ones., Conclusions: The prevalence of the primary molar roots in the present study was found to be lower than that of the previous study. This finding may result from the larger amount of patient data that was evaluated in this study, which used panoramic radiographs.

Purpose: Knowing the anatomic location and also variations of the mandibular canal is especially important for surgical procedures on mandible such as dental implant surgery, impacted molar extraction and sagittal split ramus osteotomy. The purpose of this study was to clarify the incidence and location of bifid mandibular canals in an adult Turkish population to avoid complications during surgical procedures., Methods: A retrospective study using cone beam CT images was performed to evaluate bifid mandibular canal in mandible of 242 patients. Both right and left sides were studied (n = 484). Axial, sagittal, cross-sectional and panoramic images were evaluated, and three-dimensional (3D) images were also reconstructed and evaluated, as necessary. The course and length of bifid mandibular canals and the superior and inferior angles between canals were measured., Results: Bifid mandibular canals were observed in 225 (46.5%) of 484 sides examined. The most frequently encountered type of bifid canal was the forward canal (29.80%), followed by the retromolar (28.10%) the buccolingual (14.50%) and the dental canal type (8.30%). Mean lengths of bifid canals were 13.6 mm in the right side and 14.1 mm in the left side. Mean superior angles were 139° on the right and 141° on the left side, whereas mean inferior angles were 38° on the right side and 32° on the left side. No statistically significant differences were found in the lengths or angles between the right and left sides and also for gender (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: This study, which utilized CBCT images, uncovered a higher prevalence of bifid mandibular canals than what has been reported in previous studies using conventional radiography techniques.
