Objective: Third molar impaction is seen much more than impaction of any other tooth as they are the last teeth to erupt. Inadequate retromolar space and the direction of eruption may be contributing factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between third molar impaction and different skeletal face types., Subjects and Methods: Panoramic and lateral cephalometric radiographs of 158 orthodontic patients (aged 19-25 years) were retrieved from the archived records of the Necmettin Erbakan University Faculty of Dentistry, Konya, Turkey. Third molar impaction was classified on the basis of Winter's classification. The skeletal facial type was determined by a measure of the angle created by the lines Ba-Na and Pt-Gn. The mean was 90 ± 2 and this value was regarded as mesofacial. An angle of > 93° was regarded as brachyfacial and an angle of < 87° as dolichofacial., Results: The overall presence of mandibular and maxillary third molar impactions was 65.2 and 38.6%, respectively. Although there was a statistically significant difference between different skeletal facial types and mandibular third molar impaction (p < 0.05), no statistically significant differences were observed between different skeletal facial types and maxillary third molar impaction (p > 0.05). Brachyfacials demonstrated a lower prevalence of third molar impaction than dolichofacials., Conclusions: Different skeletal face types were associated with mandibular third molar impaction. Brachyfacials, who have a greater horizontal facial growth pattern than dolichofacials, showed a lower prevalence of impacted mandibular third molars., (© 2018 The Author(s) Published by S. Aim: The occurrence of multiple supernumerary teeth is rare and often found in association with syndromes such as cleidocranial dysplasia, Gardner's syndrome or cleft lip and palate. Few examples of non-syndromal multiple supernumerary teeth have been reported. The aim of this multi-centre study was to investigate the prevalence of supernumerary premolar teeth in non-syndromic patients and to investigate the association between the presence of supernumerary premolar teeth and malocclusion type in a Turkish population., Materials and Methods: The clinical records and panoramic radiographs of 10,700 patients (referred to three different university hospitals) were retrospectively examined for the presence of supernumerary premolars. Age, gender, orthodontic malocclusion type, the number of supernumerary premolars (two or more), the distribution, location, position (vertical, horizontal, inverted, mesio-angular), surgical approach, and related complications (pain, cystic changes, root resorption, or eruption disturbance of adjacent teeth) were recorded., Results: Forty-two cases (13 Class I, 17 Class II, 12 Class III) of multiple mandibular supernumerary premolars in patients without an associated syndrome were detected. A total of 97 (27 Class I, 41 Class II, 29 Class III) supernumerary premolar teeth were found, with a prevalence of 0.39%. No statistical difference was found related to gender, malocclusion type and supernumerary premolars (p > 0.05). The majority of the extra premolars were located in the mandible, which was statistically significant (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The present study revealed that the prevalence of multiple supernumerary teeth was 0.39%. The most frequently impacted premolars were found in the mandible and more often associated with Class II malocclusions in the examined Turkish population.

Aim: Aims of this study are to investigate the prevalence and distribution of impacted permanent teeth (IPT) and also the relationship between impaction and dental arch form and length in a Turkish orthodontic patient population., Materials and Methods: Panoramic radiographs, intraoral photographs and dental casts of 1527 patients (947 females, 580 males) aged 13 and above who underwent orthodontic treatment at Selcuk University Department of Orthodontics from 1990 to 2005 were retrospectively reviewed for IPT (except third molars). A comprehensive chart review was conducted in all subjects. Patient and treatment-related data were registered in a computer database for comparative analysis., Results: When impacted supernumerary teeth (IST) were excluded, prevalence of IPT was 9.10% with no significant differences between the genders (p=0.897). Prevalence of IPT including IST was 9.69%. Most commonly impacted teeth were maxillary canines (5.24%) followed by mandibular second premolars (2.23%), maxillary second premolars (1.11%) and mandibular canines (0.92%). IST (0.72%) and impacted molars (0.72%) were the least common anomalies after incisor impaction (0.65%). Maxillary to mandibular IPT ratio was 1.88 and majority of IPT were in the anterior segment with an anterior-posterior ratio of 1.45 in all patients., Conclusion: Most commonly affected impacted teeth were maxillary canines, mandibular second premolars, maxillary second premolars and mandibular canines respectively in our population with no predisposition difference between the genders. Arch length deficiency was determined as 14% for patients with maxillary impaction and 10% for patients with mandibular impaction. None of the patients with IPT have shown square arch form.

Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence, associated pathology and symptoms, and treatment of impacted premolars in a Turkish population., Study Design: This retrospective study examined panoramic radiographs and clinical records of 9,000 patients who presented consecutively at our oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics between January 1998 and January 2009. In addition to demographic data (patient sex and age), data was compiled on the number and location of impacted missing maxillary and mandibular premolars, retained deciduous molars, associated pathologies and symptoms, and treatment methods., Results: A total of 105 impacted maxillary or mandibular premolars were observed in 93 patients (1.03%). Of these, 48 (51.6%) were female (age range: 13-57 years) and 45 (43.4%) were male (age range: 13-58 years). Impacted mandibular second premolars accounted for 55.2% (n=58) of all impacted premolars. Migration was observed in only 11.83% of patients (n=11). Pathological changes and symptoms were noted in 15.05% of patients., Conclusion: Our results suggest that the prophylactic extraction of non-migrated impacted premolars may not be necessary. If the patient is cooperative, a "wait and see " approach may be preferable. Orthodontic or prosthetic treatment options should also be considered when planning treatment of non-migrated impacted premolars. Migrated impacted premolars should be kept under observation and should only be removed if they are associated with pathology or if extraction is required for prosthetic or orthodontic treatment.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and associated pathologies of impacted teeth in Turkish oral patients., Methods: A retrospective survey was carried out in 12,129 patients who visited the Department of Oral Diagnosis and Radiology, Ondokuz Mayıs University, Faculty of Dentistry, Turkey, from January 2003 to December 2007. The minimum age for inclusion was 14 years and third molar impactions were excluded from the study. To be enrolled in the study, the patient's chart had to contain a panoramic radiograph with supplemental periapical radiographs. One radiologist examined all radiographs to determine the number, orientation and types of impacted teeth and the presence of associated pathologies and developmental dental anomalies associated with this phenomenon., Results: Of the 12,129 patients, 1117 (9.2%) patients aged 14 to 80 years had one or more dental impactions (in total 1356 impacted teeth). The male to female ratio was 1:1.4 (457:660). The maxillary canine teeth were the most commonly encountered (71.5%), followed by the mandibular premolars (8.6%). The analysis of the orientation of the impacted teeth showed that 480 impacted teeth were in a mesioangular position (35.4%), followed by vertical (28.9%), distoangular (18.9%), horizontal (16.5%) and buccolingual (0.3%) orientations., Conclusion: The prevalence of non-third molar impacted teeth was 9.2% among Turkish oral patients. The maxillary canines were the most frequent impacted teeth. The most common orientations of impacted teeth were the mesioangular position and vertical orientation. The most frequent associated pathologic change was cystic change.

Purpose: The objectives of the present study were to determine the frequency and gender difference of transmigrated and impacted canines and to evaluate the characteristics and treatment protocols in a Turkish orthodontic patient population., Materials and Methods: We designed a retrospective study composed of pretreatment and post-treatment dental casts, intraoral photographs, and full mouth periapical and panoramic radiographs of 2,215 patients (1,275 females and 940 males). Observations were made regarding impacted mandibular and maxillary canines, retained deciduous canines, patient gender and age, side and number of transmigrated canines and associated pathologic features, and treatment of the impacted canines and transmigrated canines. The Pearson chi(2) test and Fisher's exact test were used to determine the potential differences in the distribution of canine impaction and transmigration when stratified by gender., Results: The frequency of patients with impacted and transmigrated canines was 5.1% and 0.3%, respectively. None of the patients with a transmigrated mandibular canine had any pathologic changes; however, the maxillary transmigrated canine was associated with impacted mesiodens. All transmigrated canines were unilateral and impacted. Four canines migrated from the left to right, and 2 migrated from right to left. Of 6 patients, 2 had retained primary canines and 4 had exfoliated primary canines. Three of the transmigrated mandibular canines were type 1 and 2 were type 2. In the treatment protocol, 4 impacted mandibular canines and 78 maxillary canines were surgically exposed for orthodontic treatment, 4 of 6 transmigrated canines were surgically removed, and 2 were observed periodically., Conclusions: If the diagnosis of canine impaction and transmigration in patients is made earlier, it is possible that the tooth might have been in a better position for orthodontic eruption into the arch. Careful patient selection and preparation are therefore essential, as is cooperation between the orthodontist and oral surgeon., (Copyright 2010 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Purpose: The objectives of the present study were to investigate the frequency of impaction, agenesis, angular position, and related pathologic changes of third molar teeth in a group of orthodontic patients., Materials and Methods: Our sample included the panoramic radiographs of 351 orthodontic patients aged 20 to 26 years (mean 22.8). The descriptive characteristics of agenesis, impaction, angular position, and pathologic changes of third molars were recorded. The chi(2) test was used for analysis., Results: The proportion of third molar agenesis was 17.3% with no statistically significant gender differences (18.4% for women and 15.8% for men). The frequency of impacted third molars (ITMs) was 35.9% (24.2% in men and 45.0% in women; P < .05). The frequency of maxillary ITMs was 43.2% (192 of 444 teeth), and the frequency of mandibular ITMs was 56.8% (252 of 444 teeth). The position observed most often was mesioangular inclination, with a frequency of 50.0%. Only 10.4% of the ITM teeth were affected by any pathologic changes, and most of these changes were associated with the horizontal position., Conclusions: The present results showed that agenesis accounted for 17.3% and impaction for 35.9% of the pathologic features in this group of Turkish orthodontic patients aged 20 to 26 years of age. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of dental anomalies in different orthodontic malocclusions., Methods: Based on pretreatment diagnostic records, 900 orthodontic patients were classified as Class I (n = 358), Class II (n = 325), Class II Division 2 (n = 51), or Class III (n = 166). The occurrence rates of each dental anomaly were calculated as percentages of the total sample. Differences in incidence rates of each dental anomaly by sex and malocclusion were analyzed by using chi-square, Fisher exact, and z tests. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine whether there were significant differences in the occurrence of dental anomalies by age., Results: It was found that 40.3% of patients (n = 363) had at least 1 dental anomaly. Agenesis was the most common (21.6%), followed by dens evaginatus (6.2%), invaginatus (5.0%), pulp stones (4.2%), and impaction (2.9%). No statistically significant correlations were found between dental anomaly and type of malocclusion, with the exception of impaction and short or blunt roots (P <0.01 and P <0.05, respectively). The Mann-Whitney U test indicated no significant difference in dental anomalies by age., Conclusions: A remarkably high rate of dental anomalies was recorded in orthodontic patients; therefore, orthodontists should carefully examine pretreatment records for dental anomalies to include their management in the treatment planning.

Objective: The aim of this research was to investigate the incidence of fully impacted teeth and their complications and to recommend suitable removal times for these teeth., Method and Materials: One thousand patients who were referred to the Oral Surgery Clinic, Faculty of Dentistry, at Atatürk University were intraorally examined, and fully impacted teeth were determined from radiographs. The locations of fully impacted teeth and the complications they caused were recorded. A total of 110 patients with fully impacted teeth were divided into three age groups: 16 to 19 years, 20 to 35 years, and older than 35 years., Results: The incidence of fully impacted teeth was found to be 11.00%. The maxillary left third molars in females and the mandibular left third molars in males were the most frequently impacted teeth. Complications, such as pain, cysts, resorption of the impacted or adjacent teeth, infection, crowding, and axial changes in the position of the adjacent teeth, were associated with 28.42% of impacted teeth. Impaction was most frequent in the 20- to 35-year-old group., Conclusion: Extraction of fully impacted wisdom teeth before they cause complication is the ideal approach. However, in economically developing countries, such as Turkey, extraction of these teeth after complications occur is the most suitable approach because of restrictions in governmental budgets and the patients' poor socioeconomic conditions and fear of dentistry and oral
