Farming seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is an essential activity in the Mediterranean basin including the Aegean Sea. The main seabass producer is Turkey accounting for 155,151 tons of production in 2021. In this study, skin swabs of seabass farmed in the Aegean Sea were analysed with regard to the isolation and identification of Pseudomonas. Bacterial microbiota of skin samples (n = 96) from 12 fish farms were investigated using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and metabarcoding analysis. The results demonstrated that Proteobacteria was the dominant bacterial phylum in all samples. At the species level, Pseudomonas lundensis was identified in all samples. Pseudomonas, Shewanella, and Flavobacterium were identified using conventional methods and a total of 46 viable (48% of all NGS+) Pseudomonas were isolated in seabass swab samples. Additionally, antibiotic susceptibility was determined according to standards of the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) and Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) in psychrotrophic Pseudomonas. Pseudomonas strains were tested for susceptibility to 11 antibiotics (piperacillin-tazobactam, gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin, doripenem, meropenem, imipenem, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and tetracycline) from five different groups of antibiotics (penicillins, aminoglycosides, carbapenems, fluoroquinolones, and tetracyclines). The antibiotics chosen were not specifically linked to usage by the aquaculture industry. According to the EUCAST and CLSI, three and two Pseudomonas strains were found to be resistant to doripenem and imipenem (E-test), respectively. All strains were susceptible to piperacillin-tazobactam, amikacin, levofloxacin, and tetracycline. In this study, economic analyses and general structure of fish farms in 2009 Ordu, which has an important position in aquaculture sector in Turkey, researched. The data used in the study were obtained from face to face interviews, surveys and observations. In the study, the fish farms which were registered to the provincial directorate of agriculture in Ordu and make production actively were evaluated. The farms were analyzed under three groups having ⩽10, 11-30 and >31 ton/year capacities considering their annual productions by 2009. General profiles of the producers were presented according to the groups. Production and economic structures of the fish farms were researched and the differences between the fish farms were tried to be revealed. The solution offers were also tried to be presented to solve the problems by determining the faults seen at the production structure of the farms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Following the spread from its origins in China, Asian lineage highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 was first recorded in Europe in Turkish poultry and in poultry and wild birds in Romania in early October 2005. On 19 October 2005 Croatia became the second European country to record an outbreak in wild birds, involving Mute Swans Cygnus olor. Subsequent surveillance in Croatia revealed further instances of H5N1 in dead and sick Mute Swans in 2005, and in 2006 in more dead Mute Swans and in living, apparently healthy, Black-headed Gulls Larus ridibundus, but not in poultry. The observations presented here suggest that Croatia experienced two independent incursions of Asian lineage HPAI H5N1, but genetic confirmation is not available. Potential routes of introduction by wild birds, the poultry industry and fish-farming practices are discussed, but the evidence for all of these remains circumstantial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Mediterranean monk seals Monachus monachus attacked fish on 11 marine fish farms in the Turkish Aegean between 1992 and 2000. There were 40 attacks on fish farms where gilthead sea bream Sparus auratus and European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were raised in holding cages. Single seals usually attacked cages at night, regardless of the size of fish in the cages. The seals damaged both holding nets of the cages and fish and, on most occasions, fish escaped as a result of the attacks. With the exception of only one facility, all fish farms attacked by monk seals were concentrated on the large peninsulas including Karaburun and Bodrum Peninsulas, and the number of seal attacks was higher during the winter months. A direct intervention to deter seals such as the use of lights, feeding with pesticide-injected fish, noise generation, warning and direct shots with rifles and physical exclusion of seals from holding cages by installing antipredator nets were applied to prevent or reduce seal attacks. Our study shows that deterrents such as lights and warning shots were not effective in preventing monk seal attacks. However, both curtain- and bag-type antipredator nets were found to be effective.
