The article discusses research on the origins of the Ebola virus disease conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Uganda. It focuses on research on Ethiopian epauletted fruit bats, or Epomophorus labiatus, and their possible role in transmitting the disease to humans. The author examines Ebola symptoms, outbreaks since 1976, and efforts to stop contagion. Other topics include transmission of Ebola from human corpses, Ebola vaccine research, and similarities between Ebola and Marburg virus disease.
