Blood, fecal and oral swab specimens as well as tissue samples were collected from bats from across the country during the period of June to July 2007 within the framework of the Global Disease Detection Program. Researchers extracted total RNA from pooled or individual liver, spleen and lung samples from the bats in order to determine the presence of the virus.

It was this change in the way the virus acts that led to a delay in treatment and recognition of the disease. Ebola is thought to come from bats.

It states that the disease has infected various workers in a gold mine which resulted towards the death of 128 miners in the Democratic Republic of Congo from 1998-2000.
