The article focuses on how to improve community wellbeing amidst economic recession through local health and wellbeing partnership. Health policy in the UK increasingly favours a participative model of health and obesity programmes regard the individual as solely responsible for solving their own obesity. British government policy encourages the public to become knowledgeable about their health and take control of their weight; however the information found in primetime television is unhelpful in improving levels of knowledge. Based on the Body Mass Index (BMI, kg/m2), most men in nations such as the UK and USA are reportedly overweight or obese. This is authoritatively defined as a massive and growing problem. Drawing from embodied sociology, critical obesity literature and qualitative data generated during an Economic and Social Research Council funded project on masculinities and weight-related issues, this paper offers a critical realist contribution to the obesity debate. Rather than endorsing the institutionalised war on fat, and correcting so-called ‘laymen’ who dismiss medicalised weight-for-height recommendations, the following presents and honours men's justificatory accounts for levels of body mass that medicine labels too heavy (implicitly or explicitly too fat). Men's critical understandings, which are connected to their displays of moral worth, are considered under three headings: the compatibility of heaviness, healthiness and physical fitness; looking and feeling ill at a supposedly ‘healthy’ BMI; and resisting irrational standardisation. By empirically ‘bringing in’ men's meanings, sensibilities and culturally informed aesthetics, this paper casts a different light on medicalised measures that support potentially corrosive obesity epidemic psychology. The article focuses on the issue of obesity in Great Britain. Objectives To examine changes in public perceptions of overweight in Great Britain over an eight year period. Design Comparison of data on self perceived weight from population surveys in 1999 and 2007. Setting Household surveys of two representative samples in Great Britain. Participants 853 men and 944 women in 1999, and 847 men and 989 women in 2007. Main outcome measures Participants were asked to report their weight and height and classify their body size on a scale from "very underweight" to "obese." Results Self reported weights increased dramatically over time, but the weight at which individuals perceived themselves to be overweight also rose significantly. In 1999,81% of overweight participants correctly identified themselves as overweight compared with 75% in 2007, demonstrating a decrease in sensitivity in the self diagnosis of overweight. Conclusions Despite media and health campaigns aiming to raise awareness of healthy weight, increasing numbers of overweight people fail to recognise that their weight is a cause for concern.
