The article describes the foundation and evolution of one of the earliest departments of aeronautical engineering in Great Britain. It relates that the aeronautical department at Queen Mary College is the first British higher education institution to begin teaching and research in the subject. A brief history of the College's origin in the East London College is discussed, as well as the foundation of the aeronautical laboratory at the college. Also, the activities of the two men, Albert Peter Thurston and Norman Augustus Victor Tonnstein, who were responsible for the growth of aeronautical department in the College is cited.
