This study compared the online comprehension and the production of multiple interrogatives in 18 Romanian-English bilingual children aged 6;0-9;2 (MAGE = 8;0) living in the UK who have Romanian as heritage language (L1) and English as majority language (L2) and 32 Romanian monolingual children aged 6;11 to 9;8 (MAGE = 8;3). We examined whether differences emerge between heritage and monolingual children in the online comprehension and in the production of multiple interrogatives in Romanian, which requires fronting of all wh-phrases, contrary to English. The main aim was to uncover to which extent similarities or differences in morphosyntactic properties between the L1 and the L2 systems affect the acquisition and processing of the heritage language/L1. Online comprehension was assessed in a self-paced listening task, while production was assessed using an elicitation task. The results reveal that Romanian heritage children show similar online comprehension patterns to monolingual children for multiple interrogatives in Romanian. A different pattern emerges for production as heritage children produce less complex multiple questions in Romanian and avoid movement of two wh-phrases in all elicited structures. Given that their predominant responses for multiple interrogatives only make use of the structural option present in English, namely one fronted wh-phrase and one in-situ, we take this to show that there is transfer from the majority language to the heritage language. Thus, language production in the children's L1 seems to be affected by properties of the dominant L2, under cross-linguistic influence. Taken together, the results for both comprehension and production suggest that heritage children are able to establish the underlying representation of multiple wh-movement structures, similarly to monolinguals, but have difficulties activating the more complex structure in production. Background Children who have social communication disorder (CwSCD) demonstrate persistent difficulties with language pragmatics in conversations and other verbal interactions. Speech-language interventions for these children often include promotion of metapragmatic awareness (MPA); that is, the ability to identify explicitly and reflect upon pragmatic rules (MP explicitation). Improved MPA is assumed to support increased self-monitoring and generalization of pragmatic knowledge. Evidence to support this as a mechanism of intervention depends upon the identification of a systematic relationship between MPA and use of pragmatic rules in conversational behaviour. Aims To explore whether there is a relationship between MPA and conversational pragmatic ability in CwSCD. Further, it is asked whether CwSCD can demonstrate MPA for the pragmatic rules they themselves violate in conversation. Methods & Procedures Thirty-nine CwSCD (aged 6;1-10;7 years), recruited from NHS speech and language therapy caseloads across the North West of England and South East Scotland, completed (1) a novel task, the Assessment of Metapragmatics (AMP), in which they identified and described a series of pragmatic errors depicted in scripted films; responses on this task were categorized into levels of MP explicitation; and (2) the Targeted Observation of Pragmatics in Children's Conversations (TOPICC), a semi-structured conversation-elicitation task from which 12 aspects of pragmatics were coded for presence of impairment. Regression analysis was used to explore the interaction between scores on the two tasks. Outcomes & Results Expressive language score was a significant predictor of TOPICC score. However, AMP score, when added into the regression model, did not explain a significant amount of unique variance in TOPICC score. Over half of CwSCD demonstrated moderate or marked impairment in one or two pragmatic behaviours on TOPICC. For just over half of the occasions where a child showed moderate/marked impairment of a pragmatic rule on TOPICC did the same child demonstrate MPA for the same pragmatic rule on AMP. On 25% of occasions they demonstrated the most sophisticated level of MP explicitation. Conclusions & Implications Findings indicate that some CwSCD have an awareness of the pragmatic rules they themselves violate in conversation. This finding suggests that, for some CwSCD, it may be beneficial for speech and language therapy to focus on improving motivation for use and better understanding of the impact of one's own pragmatic performance on others, rather than solely teaching awareness of pragmatic rules that are already understood but not used. Background. A significant number of pupils in UK schools learn English as an additional language (EAL). Relative differences between the educational attainment of this group and monolingual, English-speaking pupils call for an exploration of the literacy needs of EAL learners. Aims. This study explores the developmental progression of reading and listening comprehension skills and a range of reading-related skills in EAL learners, whose first language is of South Asian origin, and their monolingual peers. Sample. Participants were 39 children learning EAL and 39 monolingual, English-speaking children who were all in school Year 3 at the start of the study. Method. Children completed standardized measures of comprehension, vocabulary, reading accuracy, and reading fluency in school Year 3 and again in Year 4. Results. The results suggest that, although children learning EAL often demonstrate fast and accurate reading accuracy skills, lower levels of vocabulary knowledge place significant constraints on EAL learners' comprehension of spoken and written texts. Conclusions. Reciprocal relationships between vocabulary and comprehension may lead to increasing gaps in reading comprehension between monolingual and EAL pupils over time. It is proposed that support for the development of vocabulary skills in children learning EAL is needed in early years' classrooms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study that explores the difference between children with infantile autism and children with specific developmental receptive language disorder in Great Britain. The study involved boys aged five to 10 years old without demonstrable neurological dysfunction, hearing loss or mental retardation who had a current severe developmental language disorder. It was found that children diagnosed as autistic had a more deviant language development, severe comprehension disorder, extensive language disability and defect in the social usage of the language acquired than non-autistic children.
