The exploration of public views on complex health policy issues has used a number of methods ranging from surveys to focus groups. These have suffered from being primarily designed to collect information, rather than attempting to ameliorate the 'democratic deficit' in decision making, particularly in the introduction of the new genetic technologies. Citizens' juries have been promoted recently as an alternative to these more conventional approaches, and this paper evaluates a recent attempt to expand the scope of the citizens' jury to Wales, focusing on the introduction of genetic testing for common disorders. This article examines the gender- and generation-based division of labor in family farms. The family farm has been identified as the main unit of agricultural production in Great Britain and it has been widely studied as an economic unit in agricultural research. In this article, the approach is to look at the farm family in terms of a household work strategy although in the article, authors argue that this should take into account the importance of moral obligation and patriarchal ideology, according to them. The importance of gender and generation are explored as intersecting factors in the division of labor. The dominance of family-run businesses should not be taken to indicate absence of dynamism. The family farm is not an archaic relic from a peasant past, but has been subject to considerable processes of economic development. Qualitative and quantitative data used in the article illustrates that children in farming families can under some circumstances contribute towards the work of the farm and this could form an important part of the family business or work strategy. In economically marginal farms, it could make an important contribution to the survival of the faint, but children also contributed in more prosperous farms as well.

This article examines the relationship between technology, work culture and organization of the labor process in a mid-nineteenth-century dockyard in Great Britain. Work culture is produced by workers, but in important ways it is bounded by both technology and the work process, and also by the socioeconomic context of which they are a part. In fact, work culture is a realized product of the sum of a social group's social and material work experience, and is constrained by extra-organizational factors. Thus, assessing work culture in purely technological terms erects artificial barriers within social reality. The notion that culture has boundaries stresses how it is produced within organizations that reflect and encompass wider social divisions.
