The article discusses how Buddhism reached out to the West specially in the U.S. It is argued that the failure of Christianity to provide real spiritual nourishment has caused many people in the West to explore Eastern religions. The Theosophy movement asserted that Buddhism was closest to the "wisdom tradition" which bore as remnants the religions of the world. The irreverent spirit of Zen was taken up by artists, therapist, musicians and poets in North America, while the conservative type remained the interest in Great Britain until the 1960s.
