Objectives. This study identified possible dose-response relationships among bathers exposed to marine waters contaminated with domestic sewage and subsequent risk of nonenteric illness. Methods. Four intervention follow-up studies were conducted within the United Kingdom, Healthy volunteers (n = 1273) were randomized into bather and nonbather groups. Intensive water-quality monitoring was used to assign five bacteriological indices of water quality to individual bathers. Illnesses studied were acute febrile respiratory illness, and eye, ear, and skin ailments. Results. Fecal streptococci exposure was predictive of acute febrile respiratory illness, while fecal coliform exposure was predictive of ear ailments. Estimated thresholds of effect occurred at bather exposures above 60 fecal streptococci and 100 fecal coliform per 100 ml of water, respectively. Although no relationship was found between eye ailments and indicator organism exposure, compared with nonbathers, bathers were at higher risk for eye ailments. Conclusions. Nonenteric illness can be transmitted via recreational contact with marine waters contaminated with sewage. These results argue against the use of a single indicator to establish water quality standards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the usage of Computer Based Training (CBT) as a new training medium. The computer is essentially an information-handling machine which can, if carefully programmed, be made to interact with the person operating it. CBT can be much cheaper to use especially where the trainee audience is widely scattered but has access to either computers or terminals at, or near, the place of work. There have been a number of developments which have made CBT available to people who have not been able to make use of it before. This has been made possible by the use of Authoring Systems. These are basically a framework in the computer memory which the non-programmer can use to write his course. The actual format varies from one authoring system to another but most adopt the idea of providing the trainer with a number of blank frames which he can complete with the training material. The Authoring System enables the trainer to write this for a wide variety of responses and if necessary to route the trainee to extra tuition material. There is one other big danger. As with most new technologies there is a very real risk that one can get carried away with the gimmickry and forget what one is trying to achieve.
