There has been a shift in the depiction of women in advertising from objectifying representations of women as passive sex objects to agentic sexual representations where the women appear powerful and in control (Gill, 2007a, 2008), and there is substantial evidence that these representations have a negative impact on women's body image. However, to our knowledge, this study is the first experimental research that aims to compare passively objectifying and more recent sexually agentic representations. British undergraduate women (N = 122) participated in an experiment in which they were randomly assigned to view sexually passive, sexually agentic, or control print advertisements. Exposure to both types of representations of women, compared to viewing control images, was associated with increased weight dissatisfaction. The sexually agentic representations were singularly associated with increased state self-objectification. Media exposure research tends to focus on the models (e.g., their thinness) shown in advertising and pay little attention to the framing of the image. Our results highlight the powerful impact different framings can have on women's body image concerns as well as suggest that recent shifts in advertising may be particularly problematic because contemporary images increased both weight concern and self-objectification. Therefore, these images may have a more powerful impact on psychological well-being and disordered eating behaviors than traditional images. (Contains 1 table.)

This paper examines the provision of primary care for young people with an eating disorder within the UK from the perspectives of three key stakeholder groups: young people with an eating disorder, carers of young people with an eating disorder and General Practitioners (GPs). Twenty‐two young people with an eating disorder (aged 16–25) and 10 carers completed qualitative questionnaires or participated in interviews about their experiences of seeking primary care from GPs. Forty‐one GPs participated in either focus groups or interviews about delivering care to young people with eating disorders. Interviews and focus groups were audio‐recorded and transcribed verbatim. All data were then analysed qualitatively using thematic analysis. Our analysis indicates that GPs often felt they lacked the necessary knowledge and/or resources to provide adequate support to young people with an eating disorder who they also often viewed as a "difficult" patient group. Young people and carers expressed mixed but predominantly negative experiences; reporting that GPs often lacked adequate understanding of eating disorder, failed to take participants' concerns seriously, and delayed referring patients to specialist services. Media coverage of sexual violence in political contexts has previously been shown to sensationalise the events by focusing on the impact 'the scandal' may have on a politician's reputation and career rather than on the narrative of the victim. In late 2018, another political scandal appeared in newspapers worldwide, covering Brett Kavanaugh's alleged sexual assault on Christine Blasey Ford. This paper aims to explore how Blasey Ford's allegations and the subsequent hearing which came to be known as 'the Kavanaugh case' were discursively constructed in UK national newspapers between 13 September 2018 and 24 October 2018. A feminist post-structuralist discourse analysis of 94 articles from UK's 10 top-circulating national newspapers was employed to explore how heteropatriarchal power relations are continuously perpetuated within UK newspapers through instances of humanising of the perpetrator and framing allegations of sexual misconduct as (only) political game-playing. Critical feminist researchers and others have amply elucidated the perniciousness of contemporary Western beauty ideals and, particularly, the near-ubiquitous idealisations of slenderness. In this context, the advent of media images featuring “plus-size” models has been rightly heralded as a welcome challenge to this hegemony. Yet, little attention has been given to women's interpretations of these images. In this brief report, we outline a preliminary exploration of young women's views about advertising images featuring “plus-size” models in the UK. We used a discourse analytic method to analyse 35 young women's responses to a qualitative questionnaire asking for their views and feelings about three adverts featuring “plus-size” models. Our analysis suggests that, while the models were positively construed, participants also drew on distinctly conservative notions of femininity such that romanticised constructions of a “plus-sized”, traditional and domestic femininity were contrasted with a highly pejorative framing of “stick thin” women as vain, vindictive and self-obsessed. Our analysis thus indicates how representations of women focusing on body weight and shape can, even when reclaiming “fat” or “plus-size” bodies, mobilise derogatory and constricting rather than empowering constructions of femininity. Using a post-structualist, discourse analytic framework this study investigates constructions of ‘anorexia’ and ‘bulimia’ made by young people. A story completion methodology was employed to allow young people to express their understandings of eating disorders. This involved participants completing two stories, about a fictional female character, Ashley, described as engaging in either anorexic-type or bulimic-type eating behaviour. Analysis of the resulting stories demonstrated several ways in which both ‘anorexia’ and ‘bulimia’were constructed as problematic, as pathologized and as requiring treatment. These constructions were framed within conflicting paternalistic and neo-liberal narratives, whereby Ashley was constituted as both a passive and active patient in her treatment. The implications of these narratives are briefly discussed in terms of their reproduction of normative constructions of young women’s eating patterns and in terms of representations of accountability for young women’s health. The article presents an analysis on the relation of women's body size to its social condition. It, is argued that body size is closely related to gendered issue of beauty or aesthetics. However, it is not only a matter of beauty that the society associates to body size, it is also directly linked to person's physical health and nation's economic condition. Great Britain warned larger people or obese of risk of blindness. The health risks, causes and treatment of obesity are presented, followed by discussion on the dangers of over exercise for weight loss.
