To survey current UK radiology trainee experiences and opinions regarding the quality of paediatric radiology training encountered in their core years, and assess their career ambitions with regards to paediatric radiology. A 22-question online survey, approved by the BSPR committee, was promoted over 12 months (1 February 2022 to 31 January 2023) across current radiology trainees and fellows via regional radiology training programme directors (TPDs), Junior Radiology Forum (JRF) trainee representatives, at BSPR Junior Forum webinar teaching sessions, and via social media/word of mouth. Eighty-three UK survey responses were received from 17/19 (89%) training schemes. Sixty of the 83 (72%) had taken or were due to take a 2–4 month core paediatric radiology placement partly at tertiary centres (66/83, 80%), with 67/83 (81%) receiving dedicated didactic teaching. Only 26/83 (31%) reported fulfilling core curriculum competencies and 32/83 (39%) reported not receiving enough paediatric radiology training. Almost a quarter (18/83, 22%) reported <2 months of paediatric radiology rotation during core training and 12% (10/83) across six training schemes, reported no dedicated paediatric teaching sessions. Respondents who left negative comments around their experience were more likely to reject paediatric radiology as a future career option (p <0.05). Only 31% of UK radiology trainees reported having enough paediatric radiology training to achieve core competencies. Standardised training, teaching, and increased on-call support could improve confidence in dealing with emergency cases and encourage interest in paediatric radiology beyond junior years. • Paediatric radiology faces a severe workforce shortage. • Paediatric radiology training quality and quantity varies widely across the UK. • Only 31% respondents felt they fulfilled their paediatric competencies. • Poor training deters trainees from pursuing careers in paediatric radiology. • Trainees call for standardised training and better clinical support. Background: The curriculum for professionals working in paediatric rheumatology should include pain but it is unclear to what extent this currently occurs. The aim of this study was to identify pain-related curriculum content and the context in which pain is presented in educational and training documentation for healthcare professionals in this clinical speciality. Methods: Core curricula documents from UK based professional organisations were identified in partnership with healthcare professionals. Documents were analysed using a summative content analysis approach. Key pain terms were quantified and weighted frequencies were used to explore narrative pain themes. Latent content was interpreted qualitatively to explore the context within which pain terms were positioned. Results: Nine curriculum documents were identified and analysed from doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists specialising in paediatric rheumatology. Pain themes represented a mean percentage of 1.51% of text across all documents. Pain was rarely presented in the context of both inflammatory and non-inflammatory condition types despite being a common feature of each. Musculoskeletal pain was portrayed simply as a 'somatic' symptom, rather than as a complex phenomenon involving biological and psychosocial processes. Content around the assessment and management of pain was vague and inexplicit. Conclusion: Current educational and training documentation in paediatric rheumatology do not include core pain topics. Curricula for these healthcare professionals would benefit from updates in contemporary pain theories and examples of in-context, evidence-based pain practices. Background: Starting work as a junior doctor can be daunting for any medical student. There are numerous aspects of the hidden curriculum which many students fail to acquire during their training. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of a novel foundation year one (FY1) doctor preparation course focusing on certain core topics, practical tips and components of the hidden curriculum. The primary objective was to improve the confidence level and knowledge of final year medical students transitioning to FY1 doctors. Method: A 2-day, practical course titled 'Preparation 2 Practice' delivering hands-on, small-group and lecture-based teaching, covering core medical student undergraduate curriculum topics in medicine and surgery. The course content spanned therapeutics, documentation skills and managing acute clinical tasks encountered by FY1 doctors during an on-call shift. A pre- and post-course survey and knowledge assessment were carried out to assess the effectiveness of the course. The assessment was MCQ-based, derived from topics covered within our course. The 20-question test and a short survey were administered electronically. Results: Twenty students from a single UK medical school attended the course. 100% participation was observed in the pre- and post-course test and survey. The median post-course test result was 22 (IQR 20.25-23.75) which was higher than the median pre-course test score of 18.75 (IQR 17-21.75). A Wilcoxon sign rank test revealed a statistically significant difference between the pre- and post-course test results (P =.0003). The self-reported confidence score of delegates on starting work as a junior doctor was also significantly higher following the course (P =.004). Conclusion: The results show a significant improvement in perceived confidence and knowledge on core curriculum topics amongst final year medical students having attended our FY1 doctor preparation course. Aesthetic facial surgery is considered to be within the remit of the maxillofacial surgeon but this is not reflected currently in the trainees' curriculum. In contrast, the plastic surgery curriculum demands detailed training in facial aesthetics. In this paper we have compared the UK OMFS, plastics, and otolaryngology curricula, and used the feedback of trainees to suggest a new aesthetics curriculum. Our method was based on the first three steps of Kern's 1998 six-step model of curricula development: identification of problems, assessment of need, and goals or objectives. The cosmetic certification criterion of the Royal College of Surgeons was used as a baseline for comparison. There was huge variation in the detail and specification of the three specialties' curricula: plastics covered 11/11 of the assessed procedures, while OMFS and otolaryngology covered 7/11 And 4/11, respectively. A total of 45 trainees provided feedback and there was an overall consensus that more training in aesthetics would be beneficial, though accessibility to resources would be an issue. With input from the BAOMS aesthetics lead, our ambitious curriculum increases the number of logbooks to reflect our expertise in the head and neck. It also broadens the span of training over all years of specialist training and, most importantly, relaxes the criteria for transferrable skills. Embracing aesthetics as part of the core curriculum will be beneficial for the future of OMFS, and will produce more rounded surgeons at the end of training. Even the most optimistic observers cannot ignore the financial and logistical setbacks that will have to be faced to achieve this, but we hope that this paper will stimulate a discussion. Background: There is increasing interest in global health teaching among medical schools and their students. Schools in the UK and internationally are considering the best structure, methods and content of global health courses. Academic work in this area, however, has tended to either be normative (specifying what global health teaching ought to look like) or descriptive (of a particular intervention, new module, elective, etc.). Methods: While a number of studies have explored student perspectives on global health teaching, these have often relied on tools such as questionnaires that generate little in-depth evidence. This study instead used qualitative methods to explore medical student perspectives on global health in the context of a new global health module established in the core medical curriculum at a UK medical school. Results: Fifth year medical students participated in a structured focus group session and semi-structured interviews designed to explore their knowledge and learning about global health issues, as well as their wider perspectives on these issues and their relevance to professional development. While perspectives on global health ranged from global health 'advocate' to 'sceptic', all of the students acknowledged the challenges of prioritising global health within a busy curriculum. Conclusions: Students are highly alert to the diverse epistemological issues that underpin global health. For some students, such interdisciplinarity is fundamental to understanding contemporary health and healthcare. For others, global health is merely a topic of geographic relevance. Furthermore, some students appeared to accept global health as a specialist area only relevant to professionals working overseas, while others considered it to be an essential part of working in the globalised world and therefore relevant to all medical professionals. Students also clearly noted that including 'soft' subjects and more discursive approaches to teaching and learning often sits awkwardly in a programme where 'harder' forms of knowledge and didactic methods tend to dominate.
