This article reports the first case of Aphelenchoides fragariae, a plant-parasitic nematode, infecting the ornamental plant Darmera peltata in the United Kingdom. The infestation was discovered at an outdoor nursery in York, where the plants exhibited leaf symptoms such as chlorosis, necrosis, and foliage malformation. Morphological and molecular analyses confirmed the presence of A. fragariae in the infected plants. This study provides important information about the infestation of D. peltata by A. fragariae and contributes to the understanding of plant diseases. [Extracted from the article]

IntroductionBeta-blockers have, for 25 years, been a commonly used agent in the treatment of raised intraocular pressure (IOP). Beta-blockers can also reduce the pulse rate. With no available literature examining a cohort of patients, this study aims to investigate the resting pulse rates in patients attending a specialist glaucoma clinic in order to identify if routine review of ophthalmic medication use is indicated.MethodThe resting pulse rates of patients attending a glaucoma clinic were measured using pulseoximetry, with a medical and drug history established for each patient.ResultsIn all, 205 patients were included in the study. A total of 101 (49%) of patients were using beta-blockers in some form. The mean pulse rate for patients not using beta-blockers (104 patients) was 76 beats per minute (bpm), for topical use only (68 patients) it was 70.3 bpm, for oral use (18 patients) it was 64.7 bpm, and 58 bpm for patients using both topical and oral beta-blockers (15 patients). Groups using beta-blockers (oral, topical, oral and topical) were considered in relation to patients not using beta-blockers. All groups using beta-blockers showed a significant association with causing a bradycardia of less than 60 bpm. Patients with a pulse rate of less than 50 bpm were significantly more likely to be using topical and oral beta-blockers than oral beta-blockers alone (P=0.01).ConclusionTopical beta-blockers should be used with caution, even in the presence of established systemic beta-blocker use. OBJECTIVE To report a case-control study examining the relationship between polymorphisms in the leptin receptor (OBR) gene and the development of young-onset prostate cancer, because epidemiological studies report that prostate cancer risk is associated with animal fat intake, and thus we investigated if this association occurs via this genetic mechanism. PATIENTS, SUBJECTS AND METHODS The Lys109Arg(OBR1) and Gln223Arg (OBR2) polymorphisms in the coding region of OBR were studied in blood DNA from 271 patients with prostate cancer aged <56 years at diagnosis and 277 geographically matched control subjects. Cases were collected through the Cancer Research UK/British Prostate Group Familial Prostate Cancer Study. Blood DNA was genotyped using the polymerase chain reaction and a restriction enzyme digest. RESULTS There was no statistically significant association between theOBR genotype and prostate cancer risk; men homozygous for 109Arg genotype had a slightly increased risk for prostate cancer, with a relative risk (95% confidence interval) of 1.36 (0.65-2.85), and those homozygous for the 223Arg allele had some reduction in prostate cancer risk, at 0.82 (0.58-1.26), but neither was statistically significant. CONCLUSION This case-control study showed no significant association between leptin receptor gene polymorphisms and the risk of young-onset prostate cancer, suggesting that genetic variations in OBR are unlikely to have a major role in the development of early-onset prostate cancer in the UK. OBJECTIVE To estimate the likelihood of poor surgical results being explained by chance rather than under-performance. METHODS The 30-day mortality rates after radical cystectomy for bladder cancer were analysed theoretically. Surgical competence was defined as a mortality rate of 4%, excellence as 2% and under-performance as 8%, 12%, 20% or 40%. Four scenarios were explored for surgeons of different competence: first, the sample size required to show that a given level of under-performance is very unlikely to be due to chance; second, the likelihood of two or more consecutive deaths in a series of cases; third, the likelihood of clustering of deaths, defined as two deaths in five or in 10 cases; and last, the likelihood of outstanding surgical results (i.e. no deaths) being achieved in small cohorts by surgeons of differing competence. RESULTS For surgeons with a mortality rate of 8%, 12%, 20% or 40%, the sample sizes needed to prove under-performance are 211, 65, 21 and seven, respectively. For consecutive deaths, 0.4% of excellent, 1.4% of competent and 21% of surgeons with a mortality rate of 12% will experience two or more consecutive deaths in the next 10 cases. For clustered deaths, 1% of excellent, 5% of competent and 23% of seriously under-performing surgeons (mortality rates ≥ 12%) will experience two deaths in their next 10 cases. Lastly, for the likelihood of outstanding results, only 3.6% of surgeons with an 8% mortality rate and < 1% of surgeons with a mortality rate ≥ 12% will experience no deaths over 40 consecutive cases. CONCLUSIONS Very large cohorts are needed to confirm even significant under-performance. Consecutive deaths are very unlikely events for competent surgeons. Clustered deaths (two deaths in 10 cases) are very unlikely events for excellent surgeons but plausible for competent ones. Analysis of consecutive/clustered deaths is limited by low statistical sensitivity; only up to a quarter of seriously under-performing surgeons are identified. Wider implementation of AI in sheep in the field condition has not been possible till date due to very poor conception rate after cervical insemination with cryopreserved semen. Poor cervical penetrability in ewe and diminished sperm functions in cryopreserved semen are considered responsible for it. In the present study, effect of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on post-thaw qualities of ram semen was investigated. Ejaculates from eight adult Malpura rams were pooled and diluted (800 × 106 sperm mL−1) with TES-Tris-fructose-egg yolk extender having either 5 or 6% glycerol and supplemented with 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0% (w/v) CMC and packaged into 0.25 mL French mini straws. The straws were progressively cooled to 5 °C inside a cold cabinet (5 °C) and then equilibrated for 22 h inside a refrigerator (2–5 °C). Straws were frozen at −25 °C min−1 up to −125 °C using a programmable cell freezer (Planer Biomed R-204, UK) and finally plunged into liquid nitrogen. The post-thaw progressive motility was higher (P < 0.05) in 0.75% CMC-treated group compared to control. Overall, both pre-freeze and post-thaw sperm kinetics was comparable between CMC-treated and control groups. The post-thaw sperm viability, acrosomal integrity and sperm with high mitochondrial membrane potential (hMMP) were relatively higher while sperm with high membrane cholesterol was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in presence of 0.25% CMC compared to the control. Both sperm having hMMP and non-capacitated sperm were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in presence of 5% glycerol than 6% glycerol. Similarly, functional membrane integrity (FMI) was higher in presence of 5% glycerol than 6% glycerol when CMC was added at 0.5% to extender. In conclusion, both 0.25% CMC and 5% glycerol resulted in improvement in several post-thaw sperm functions in cryopreserved ram semen. Background: Motocross is a recreational and competitive sport involving motorcycle racing on off-road circuits. Participants have enjoyed their sport worldwide for over 100 years. In the United Kingdom, there are over 200 clubs, with over 900 events annually. Unfortunately, little evidence exists on motocross injuries and their prevention. The aim of this study is to report and to quantify the different foot and ankle injuries observed in motocross., Methods: Data was collected prospectively between August 2010 to August 2015 at our regional trauma unit, regardless of whether the sport was performed competitively or recreationally., Results: Foot and ankle related injuries were identified in 210 patients (age range 4-78 years), with the majority being male participants (189, 90%). The majority of injuries occurred within the 21- to 30-year-old-age group. Most injuries were sustained around the start of the motocross season, in early spring and the summer months. A total of 76 patients (36%) required operative intervention. The most common injury was ankle fracture (49, 23%), followed by ankle sprain (44, 21%)., Conclusion: This is the first epidemiological study in the United Kingdom documenting foot and ankle injuries in motocross. The frequency and severity of motocross-related injuries is presented. This may serve to provide recommendations and guidelines in the governing bodies of this sport.
