Long COVID, a long-lasting disorder following an acute infection of COVID-19, represents a significant public health burden at present. In this paper, we propose a new mechanistic model based on differential equations to investigate the population dynamics of long COVID. By connecting long COVID with acute infection at the population level, our modeling framework emphasizes the interplay between COVID-19 transmission, vaccination, and long COVID dynamics. In a 2019 European Commission report, the Blue Economy (BE) within the United Kingdom (UK) represented 22% of the European Union's (EU) BE Gross Value Added (GVA) at approximately €39 billion. Coupled with the clear value of the BE to the UK, there is an urgent need to innovate and develop technologies to decarbonise and advance the sector. A deeper understanding of the current position for multiple stakeholders must be considered before any major governmental or long-term strategy decisions can be made. This paper presents the perspective of academic, industrial and governmental stakeholders analysis of how the UK can move forward with developing innovations within the BE. Utilising a questionnaire and round table discussions, specialists from all stakeholders gave their opinions on industry-academia-governmental working relationships and technology transfer readiness. Reasonably high satisfaction was found with key aspects that enable a successful collaborative project between academia and industry towards technology commercialisation; however, there is still room for improvement. This paper offers an analysis of how to further enhance and foster technology development within the UK BE. A collaborative approach is proposed to ensure best practices, and a 'triple helix' (TH) collaboration strategy to be used as a tool for those engaging in these types of working relationships. This paper begins with a very brief review of the current status of offshore safety with particular reference to the UK sector. The risk-based verification concept is then described. Following identification of the research needs, a general risk-based verification framework is proposed with appropriate risk assessment contents incorporated into it. An example is then followed to demonstrate the proposed framework. The Health, Environment and Safety Information System (THESIS) software package is also used to facilitate the implementation of the framework. Finally, both the benefits and the limitations of risk-based verification in offshore applications are highlighted. The emphasis of the paper is focused on industrial applications. A fast water-based ultraviolet light (UV) curing polyurethane-acrylate (PUA) wood coating was prepared in the laboratory, and applied on oak (Quercus alba L.) at different coating amounts. The PUA wood coating can be fast cured within 22 min, which highly improved the drying speed compared to normal water-based wood coatings (often higher than 35 min). The coating amounts affected the coating properties after curing on oak. With the increase of coating amount, the adhesion, hardness and gloss value of surface increased to different extents. Meanwhile, the surface of sample became smooth gradually because the voids of the oak were filled. Thus, higher coating amount resulted in better coating properties. However, no significant increase of penetration depth was found. During curing, the hydroxyl groups of the wood reacted with the coating. The optimal parameter in this study was the coating amount of 120 g/m2, where the adhesion reached 1 (with 0–5% cross-cut area of flaking along the edges), with the hardness of 2H and the gloss of 92.56°, which met the requirement of Chinese standard GB/T 18103–2013, and could be used for engineered wood flooring. Background: Journal Impact Factor™ (JIF) is often used to evaluate the relative reputation and quality of academic journals in their respective fields, and can greatly influence the quality and scope of subsequent manuscript submissions. Therefore, many if not all academic journals are interested in increasing their JIF , to improve their academic impact., Aim: To determine the importance of the integrity of the editorial and publication process in improving the academic influence of academic journals and the JIF of academic journals., Methods: In this paper, we describe our statistical analysis of bibliometric factors - including the 2021 JIFs released in the Journal Citation Report™ 2022, discipline rankings, received and published articles in 2019-2021, and webpage visits and downloads - for seven journals published by Baishideng Publishing Group (Baishideng) and indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded™; ultimately, we introduce and discuss the editing and publishing processes of Baishideng's journals in their entirety, as they form the basis for our objective of safeguarding and bolstering integrity in academic publication., Results: For the seven journals assessed, their 2021 JIFs were basically unchanged from 2020, with the current metric ranging from 5.374 for World Journal of Gastroenterology ( WJG ) to 1.534 for World Journal of Clinical Cases ( WJCC ). Further assessments of the journals' bibliometrics from 2019 to 2020, showed that World Journal of Stem Cells has the highest self-citation rate (1.43%) and World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery has the lowest (0.21%). Additionally, the total 3012 articles published during this period were cited by more than 20000 articles in approximately 8000 academic journals. Of note, the 1102 articles published in WJG were cited by articles in 3059 journals, among which 171 journals have a JIF of > 10, including internationally renowned academic journals such as CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinicians (2021 JIF 286.130, record count: 1) , Lancet (2021 JIF 202.731, record count: 4) , Nature Reviews Immunology (2021 JIF 108.555, record count: 2), Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology (2021 JIF 73.082, record count: 9), Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology (2021 JIF 45.042, record count: 8), Gastroenterology (2021 JIF 33.883, record count: 19), and Gut (2021 JIF 31.793, record count: 21). This suggests that Baishideng's journals have been widely recognized for their academic quality. In the Reference Citation Analysis ( RCA ) database, all seven Baishideng-published journals obtained a 2022 Journal Article Influence Index ( JAII ). For example, WJG has a 2022 JAII of 22.048, ranking 18 th out of 102 journals in the field of gastroenterology & hepatology in the RCA , with 469909 total citations (6/102) and 21313 total articles (5/102). The numbers of manuscripts received and published in 2021 were both higher than those in 2019-2020. For example, WJCC received a total of 3650 manuscripts in 2021, which is 91.1% higher than those in 2019-2020 (average: 1910 papers/year). In 2021, WJCC published 1296 articles, representing an increase of 105.1% compared to those in 2019-2020 (average: 632 articles/year). The numbers of webpage visits and downloads received by the seven journals have increased year by year. For example, the number of total visits received by WJG in 2019-2021 was 1974052 in 2019, 2317835 in 2020 (increased by 17.4% compared with that in 2019), and 2652555 in 2021 (increased by 4.4% compared with that in 2020). The visitors were from more than 220 countries and regions worldwide, such as the United States, China, and the United Kingdom. Open access (OA) plays a vital role in improving the quality, efficiency, transparency, and integrity of academic journal publishing. From 2019 to 2021, a total of 5543 OA articles were published in the seven journals, of which 2083 (37.6%) were invited and published free-of-charge. During the same period, 1683 articles were published in WJG , and the authors were from more than 70 countries and regions. For the total 5543 articles published in the seven journals from 2019 to 2021, 3903 article quality tracking reports were received after the online publication of these articles. The quality of the articles was further evaluated through the Baishideng's article quality and author evaluation tracking system, with 4655 articles (84.0%) having received author evaluation and feedback, which contributes to tracking metrics for authors' satisfaction with the collective publication processes. Background: A growing number of studies have shown that thiazolidinediones (TZD) can be antipsoriatic. Pioglitazone is a representative of the class of antidiabetic drugs known as TZD. TZD can activate nuclear peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR)-c. PPARs are expressed on epidermal keratinocytes and exert their effects by promoting the terminal differentiation of keratinocytes, inhibiting epidermal growth, and reducing inflammatory responses. These observations suggest that TZD have potential benefits in the treatment of cutaneous and metabolic pathologies associated with psoriasis. Objective: A systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of combined pioglitazone treatment. We point out three controversial side effects from administration of pioglitazone in psoriasis: elevated liver enzymes, weight gain, and nausea. Study selection: Randomized, single blind, or double blind, published studies of pioglitazone compared with placebo given to patients with plaque psoriasis for 10 weeks or 12 weeks were considered for inclusion in this review. The primary outcomes were 75% or greater improvement in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index score from baseline (PASI 75) with pioglitazone. Data collection and analysis: The systematic literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases from inception up to December 20 2018. Data analysis was done using Revman 5.3 Haymarket, London, United Kingdom. Main results: We included six studies (three publications of pioglitazone only; three publications of pioglitazone combination therapy) comprising a total of 294 patients ( n  = 149 with pioglitazone only and n  = 145 with pioglitazone combination therapy) in the analysis. There was a significant PASI 75 response, in the pioglitazone only subgroup as compared to placebo (OR = 8.74, 95% CI 3.76-20.31, p < .00001), and the pioglitazone combination subgroup as compared to placebo (OR = 4.64, 95% CI 2.03-10.60, p < .00001), others, the total of pioglitazone as compared to placebo (OR = 6.37, 95% CI 3.55-11.43, p  < .00001), and tests of subgroup differences show: p  = .29, I2 = 9.5%. The incidence rate of elevated liver enzymes (OR = 3.70, 95% CI 0.56-24.31, p  = .99), weight gain (OR = 1.44, 95% CI 0.60-3.47, p = .41), and nausea (OR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.23-2.49, p = .65) were not significantly different compared with the control group. Conclusion: Pioglitazone has efficacy for the treatment of plaque psoriasis. There is no significant difference between patients treated with pioglitazone only or in combination with other therapies. The incidence rate of side effects associated with pioglitazone treatment such as elevated liver enzymes, weight gain, and nausea were not significantly different compared with the control group.
