The authors describe a structured workshop in which group members explore their fears of nuclear holocaust and the effects this fear has had on their lives. By using logotherapy ideals, the participants create a renewed sense of purpose and hope in the face of the possible apocalypse.
The ABC drama The Day After made us acutely aware of the imminent and real dangers of nuclear war. Yet, even before this media effort, three generations of Americans have lived with a subtle awareness of the potential for nuclear holocaust, which is their generations' millstone. This mental dilemma was confronted in Powers' (1984) excellent article. He concluded that "perhaps a nation in the grip of fear will always choose military power, no matter what...it doesn't take a prophet to see the end of a pattern so pronounced" (p. 35).
