The article discusses the use of machine-to-machine (M2M) applications by utilities, municipalities, law enforcement agencies and fleets in the U.S. in order to transmit information over wireless networks, monitor electricity and water consumption, manage landfills, trace convicted offenders and control assets. There are more than 6 million M2M devices at work, exchanging information over commercial data networks.
