The English language is one of the most spoken in the world. The main goal is to find how American English is originated in British English. This research Is also related about the linguistic differences between British English and American English. The study comes up with several interesting findings. Among these findings is the fact that American English is basically an outcome of Elizabethan English which the English settlers brought with them as they came to the North American Continent in the sixteenth century. Despite the fact that the main effect on American English resulted from British English on that time, there were many other things that has affected in the language, such as American Indian Pidgin English, French, and Spanish and recent immigration of other various peoples like the Italian, Chinese and German to the United States. This article reviews the causes of the 'dwindling faith' behind the American and British varieties of English by drawing a comparison between 'fiat money' and these two native varieties of English which are referred to as 'fiat codes' by the present authors. 'Fiat money' is the money whose value comes entirely from the faith its users choose to put in it believing that they can exchange the money for the things and services they may need in future. What is vital for the survival of fiat money is the continued faith of its users. If this customer faith is not maintained for one reason or another, 'fiat money' loses its strength. American and British varieties of English are likened to 'fiat money' and are called 'fiat codes' in that they have the same two characteristics fiat money has. The worldwide recognition of British and American English was not because of their intrinsic linguistic superiority over other languages in the world; the recognition originated from the faith of the people who had chosen to use them as varieties of a language of international communication with the belief that they could solve their communication problems in a world which has become increasingly dependent on international communications. Since the custodians of the these two varieties of English have failed to heed the reality of the language learning situations in the world and have insisted on the promotion of their own native varieties of English, they are witnessing the loss of faith on the part of the learners of English in general and that of many applied linguists in particular who have begun to promote the non-native varieties of English and demote the formerly unrivaled British and American Englishes. In this paper five major discrepancies between the views of the native speakers and those held by the learners and ELT experts about the status of the American and British varieties of English are mentioned as the major causes of this dwindling faith. Spelling is an area where the varieties of English beg to differ. Whereas British and American English have long been considered as having stable and juxtaposed spelling traditions, this has not been the case for newer varieties such as Australian English. This paper shows that Australian English indeed has its own spelling traditions and that they are not the result of haphazard choices from British and American English. This pilot project investigates second language (L2) learners' attitudes towards three varieties of English: American (AmE), British (BrE) and Australian (AuE). A 69-word passage spoken by a female speaker of each variety was used. Participants were 30 Chinese students pursuing Masters or Doctoral degrees in the United States, who listened to each of the three recordings and evaluated six language-related qualities and 12 person-related qualities about the three varieties of English on seven-point Likert scales. They also evaluated each speaker's teaching suitability. The results suggest that L2 learners have more positive attitudes towards the varieties of English they have been exposed to, i.e. AmE and BrE. In the second half of the twentieth century, a new type of adverb, viewpoint adverbs formed with the suffix -wise. appeared in English. This article traces the diffusion and development of viewpoint -wise adverbs using American and British newspaper corpora, the spoken component of the British National Corpus. and the Longman Spoken American Corpus. It is shown that the adverbs are at least twice as frequent in the spoken corpora as in the written, that they are increasing in both American and British English, and that the originally American adverb type is now more frequent in British English. Its spread seems to be motivated by both functional and social factors. In newspapers, a high proportion occurs in represented speech, and the major domains are sports, art and entertainment, and "living." It has extended its range of bases from nouns to noun phrases and, to some extent, generalized to adjectives and adverbs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
